C1qTNF-related proteins (CTRPs) are involved in diverse processes including metabolism, inflammation host defense, apoptosis, cell differentiation, autoimmunity, hibernation, and organogenesis. However, the physiological role of
CTRP6
remains poorly understood. Here we demonstrate that the globular domain of
CTRP6
mediates the phosphorylation and activation of the 5'-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in skeletal muscle cells. In parallel with the activation of AMPK,
CTRP6
induces the phosphorylation of
acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase
(
ACC
) and fatty acid oxidation in myocytes. Thus,
CTRP6
plays a role in fatty acid metabolism via the AMPK-
ACC
pathway.
