The growth and utilization of nitrogen by intensive Chlorella vulgaris in wastes from production of urea, containing 1300 mg NH4+-N and 4000 mg urea-N/1, was investigated. In these conditions only Chlorella vulgaris AA strain, adapted to high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen, was able to grow. The elimination of nitrogen by continuous cultures was 750 mg urea-N/1 with 5-day flow rate. A considerable part of the urea was hydrolized by urease bacteria and removed in the form of NH3. The effect of intermittent light on the growth of algae was also studied. The better growth than in continuous light, was obtained with alternate one hour periods of light and darkness. Good results were also obtained with the use of 12 hour light and 12 hour darkness.

The studies were aimed at the assessment of the coexistence of non-ulcer dyspepsia with chronic gastritis and Campylobacter pylori infection, and of the effect of therapy with De-Nol on the course of such disease. The studies involved 50 patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia. Prior to and after the treatment with De-Nol samples of the mucosa collected from the antrum and corpus of the stomach have been examined histologically with urease test indicating C. pylori infection. Chronic gastritis of the antral mucosa membrane and/or mucosa of the corpus of the stomach has been found in 36 patients, and normal mucosa in 14 patients. Therapy with De-Nol produced statistically significant improvement. Totally histological improvement has been noted in 77.1% of patients with inflammation of the antral mucous membrane and in 64.3% of patients with inflammation of the corporeal gastric mucosa. Campylobacter pylori has been eradicated in all patients with chronic gastritis. De Nol eliminates or significantly lowers an inflammation in the antrum and/or corpus of the stomach. Its action is related to the eradication of Campylobacter pylori infection.

It was found that strains of T. equinum which were tested, produced in vitro urease, gelatinase, protease for bovine serum, hemolysins for horse and sheep red blood cells, and keratinase for horse, bovine and canine hair. The ability to produce elastase and caseinase was not recorded. In urease test, it was noticed that after three passages on media with urea the time of appearance of positive reactions was shortened and all strains of T. equinum reacted positively during three days. In these studies some differences in enzyme production between T. equinum and T. mentagrophytes were recorded. Generally, T. mentagrophytes revealed stronger enzymatic properties because it produced the enzymes in two ranges of temperature, i.e. 26-28 degrees C and 37 degrees C, and in addition it dissolved horse sera. The lipase production by T. equinum in optimal temperature of growth 26-28 degrees C only, may be used as an additional test for differentiation between T. equinum and T. mentagrophytes. In penetration test, it was found that strains of T. equinum which were tested perforate in vitro horse, bovine and canine hairs but they do not attack human hair. Some differences were seen concerning the way of penetration of horse hair by the fungi. T. equinum produces rectangular and coaxial perforation organs but T. mentagrophytes produces coaxial ones only.

Some properties which may contribute to the pathogenicity of Proteus mirabilis were compared in urinary isolates and in strains provided from soil and from culture collection. Clinical isolates revealed the higher expression of all the features examined in this report: swarming growth, haemagglutination, adherence to human uroepithelial cells, urease activity and haemolytic activity. Noteworthy is the higher mean value of adherence to the uroepithelial cells in clinical strains. Three P. mirabilis urinary isolates were detected which produce an as yet unreported filterable haemolysin. However, the loss of this ability within a few months seems to suggest the temporary presence of a plasmid rapidly eliminated by the Proteus strains.

The efficacy of Ventrisol treatment in gastritis and duodenitis in children infected with Helicobacter pylori was evaluated. Eighty-six children aged 3 to 18 years with chronic abdominal pain were examined. All children underwent gastrofiberoscopic examination. H. pylori infection was diagnosed on the bases of two of three diagnostic tests (urease, bacteriological, histological). H. pylori was detected in 50 children (56.4%). After a 4 week course of Ventrisol treatment, H. pylori eradication was obtained in 41 children (82%). Twenty-one children (42%) were completely cured, whereas in 20 children (40%) elimination of HP was observed although macroscopic and histological inflammatory changes were still present. The drug was well tolerated by 92.5% of children and its accumulation was not observed.

The influence of four inhibitors: boric acid, thioglycolic acid, sodium fluoride and acetohydroxamic acid on the activity of urease, both in the native form and immobilized covalently on glutaraldehyde-pretreated chitosan membrane, was studied. Urea hydrolysis was carried out in phosphate buffer, pH 7, at 25 degrees C at urea concentration of 50 mM. The immobilized urease was more resistant than the native one to the action of all the investigated inhibitors, except boric acid. This property of the enzyme offers a possibility of its practical application.

The pot trial was performed to study the effect of L-tryptophane (as an auxin precursor) applied in the amount 0.3 and 3.0 mg per 1 kg of the soil on yield and the chemical composition of field bean. The effects of this compound on dehydrogenases activity in the cells Rhizobium leguminosarum isolated from root nodules, soil dehydrogenases activity and number of microorganisms from different systematic or physiological groups were also studied. The effects of L-tryptophane were compared to indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) after application to soil in the rate 0.2 mg per 1 kg of the soil of foliar spraying in the rate 20 mg Din 1 dm3 of distilled water. Studies were carried out in three experimental series: without microorganisms or with addition of Azotobacter sp. or Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar. viciae to the soil. It was found that L-tryptophane and IAA did not affect the yield of above ground part and roots of field bean and their effects on macronutrients concentration were not direct and dependent on the nutrient and experimental series. L-tryptophane and auxine increased the dehydrogenases activity in the cells of Rhizobium leguminosarum isolated from root nodules and the effect on the activity of soil dehydrogenases and urease was dependent on the rate of L-tryptophane. This chemical adversely affected the numbers of some microorganisms groups.

This study was designed to look for the presence of Campylobacter pylori in patients who had Roux-en-Y procedure to control symptoms of severe alkaline reflux gastritis (ARG) and to correlate findings with endoscopy and histology. Twenty five patients, who had been operated on for ARG during the last 15 years, were recruited into this study (mean age: 53 years). Surgical procedures were performed by a single surgeon (K.B.). Clinical symptoms of ARG improved after corrective surgery in all cases, but endoscopic pictures remained abnormal in 14 of 25 patients and histological gastritis was observed in all cases. Helicobacter pylori were detected in 8 patients using an urease test performed on gastric mucosa biopsies (CLO-Gistbrocades test). All 8 patients had their biliary diversion 10 or more years earlier, suggesting that H-pylori colonisation of the gastric mucosa develops only slowly once the bile reflux has been stopped. Longitudinal studies, looking for the presence of H-pylori in postoperative stomachs, may help in determining whether they have a role in the aethiology of the peptic ulcer and gastritis, or whether it really is only an innocent bystander.

Results of microbiological and serological studies, as well as QUT (quick urease test) test done for 204 patients with upper gastrointestinal tract's complaints are presented in this paper. Microbiological studies and QUT test were done with mucous membrane biopsies, taken during gastroscopy or during surgery. Serological studies were performed triple on commercial latex tests and on ELISA-test. Results obtained by QUT test, microbiological and serological studies were comparable. ELISA-test can be recommended as reference test for detection of H. pylori infections.

Non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD) means the presence of upper abdominal pain and discomfort and also nausea, vomiting, flatulence, heartburn and belching. It is estimated, that about 20-30% of all patients refer to a doctor because of dyspeptic symptoms. Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infections are diagnosed in about 60% of persons with NUD and in 80-100% of patients with clinical, endoscopic and histological diagnosis of gastritis. The authors decided to investigate a correlation between gastritis and Hp infection and a relationship between the influence of antibacterial therapy and Hp eradication from gastric mucus and to observe gastric mucosa condition. We examined 73 patients (range age 16-73): 40 females and 33 males. We employed the Sydney System for evaluation of gastric mucosa condition. The patients were divided into two groups: Hp-positive 50 persons and Hp-negative-23 persons. Hp infected subjects were treated with antibacterial drugs (bismuth + metronidazol + amoxycillin or bismuth + metronidazol + tetracycline) and Hp-negative only with bismuth. Hp eradication was obtained in 72.7% of patients treated with bismuth + metronidazol + amoxycillin and 76.4% of persons treated with bismuth + metronidazol + tetracycline. A statistically significant difference between these two kinds of antibacterial therapy was not noted. Both methods are equally effective. We observed also and improvement of the histological state of antrum and corpus gastric mucosa after therapy in comparison to changes before treatment. We noticed a decrease of dyspeptic complaint in 89.2% of Hp infected persons in whom Hp had been eradicated. Among Hp-negative 23 patients gastric mucosa was normal in 30% and chronic gastritis was found in 70% of subjects. Based upon the present results it seems very important and suitable to detect Hp organisms in gastric mucus of all dyspeptic patients who are endoscopically examined and biopsied at the same time. We would suggest to do an urease test and to take histological samples together with full endoscopic examination according to the Sydney System guidelines.
