The present study includes 178 Haemophilus influenzae strains isolated in different pediatric hospitals from Havana, Cuba, during 1991-1994, associated to divers infections (meningitis, respiratory sepsis, primary bacteremia). A combination of various typing and subtyping methods was used as epidemiological markers: serotyping (slide agglutination with diagnostical serum a-f and latex agglutination), biotyping according to Killian's procedures (by determination of indole production,
urease
and ornithine decarboxylase activity), subtyping by fermentative profiles according to Roberts' methods (glucose, maltose, xylose and fructose) and outer membrane protein profile subtyping (vesicles extraction by a modified Barenkamp's method, analysis by lineal and gradient SDS-PAGE and assessment according to our own classification system). Serotype b was identified in 89.3%, biotype I was the most frequent (79.1%), other biotypes (II, III, IV and V) were also identified. Fermentative profile D (glucose, maltose, xylose and fructose positive) was the most frequent (52.8%) while profile G (glucose, maltose, xylose positive and fructose negative) represented 20.2%. Other known profiles were present. PA2 (33.7%) was the most frequent OMP subtype. Even though 11 different protein subtypes were found, the 77.5% of the strains were located in only three OMP electrophoretic subtypes (PA2,
PC1
, LA2).

We evaluated the use of polyacrylate polymers to aid phytostabilization of mine soils. In a pot experiment, perennial ryegrass was grown in a mine soil and in uncontaminated soil. Growth was stimulated in the polymer-amended mine soil compared with an unamended control, and water-extractable levels of soil Cu and Zn decreased after polymer application. In an experiment performed in six 60-cm-diameter cylinders filled with fertilized mine soil, polymers were applied to three cylinders, with the remainder used as unamended control. Total biomass produced by indigenous plant species sown in polymer-amended soil was 1.8 (Spring-Summer) or 2.4 times (Fall-Winter) greater than that of plants from unamended soil. The application of polymers to the mine soil led to the greatest activity of soil enzymes. Soil pH, biomass of Spergularia purpurea and Chaetopogon fasciculatus, and activities of protease and cellulase had large loadings on principal component (PC)1, whereas growth of Briza maxima and the activities of
urease
, acid phosphatase, and beta-glucosidase had large loadings on PC2. The treatments corresponding to controls were located on the negative side of
PC1
and PC2. Amended treatments were on the positive side of PC2 (Spring-Summer) or on the positive side of
PC1
(Fall-Winter), demonstrating differential responses of plants and soil parameters in the two growth cycles.

Taking the typical alpine meadows Potentilla froticosa shrub meadow, Kobresia humilis meadow, and K. pygmaea meadow in the Haibei State of Qinghai Province as the research objects, a comprehensive assessment of soil quality was conducted by principal component analysis (PCA), with seven indices of soil microbial activities and ten indices of soil chemical properties. The soil quality of the alpine meadow could be characterized by three principal components (PC). In the first component (
PC1
), 13 indices had high factorial loads; in the second component (PC2), 3 indices had high factorial loads; in the third component (PC3), only one index, total phosphors, had high factorial load. In combining with Norm values, eleven indices including microbial biomass carbon (MBC),
urease
, alkaline phosphatase, protease, organic matter, total N, available N, available P, available K, bulk density, and CEC were selected to establish minimum data set (MDS) for the comprehensive assessment of soil quality of alpine meadow in Haibei. The PCA and corresponding weight coefficient analysis showed that the soil quality (0-10 cm and 10-20 cm layers) of the three kind meadows was in the order of K. humilis meadow > P. froticosa shrub meadow > K. pygmaea meadow, and P. froticosa shrub meadow > K. pygmaea meadow > K. humilis meadow, respectively.
