Combined application of sewage sludge and chemical fertilizer in weathered particles of coal gob (WPCG) was studied by pot-scale trials. The accumulation of available nutrients and weathering process of coal gob piles were also investigated by field trial. It was showed that combined application of sewage sludge and chemical fertilizer increased yields of tall fescue, improved WPCG fertility especially its biological fertility. After application of sewage sludge, the microbial biomass carbon, urease activity and total microorganism population were, respectively, increased by 0.3-2.4, 1.8-2.8 and 34-150 times. Heavy metals did not accumulate in tall fescue after application of sewage sludge in WPCG. Available nutrients were accumulated in topsoil eight years after reclamation in the field trial. Moreover, the effects of biological weathering exceeded that of natural weathering in coal gob piles. The percentage of coal gob particle diameter smaller than 3mm in the reclamation sites was increased by 85-203%, but 30% in the un-reclaimed sites. While that of greater than 10 mm in the un-reclaimed sites was decreased by 19%, however, 62-74% in the reclamation sites. It was concluded that combined application of sewage sludge and chemical fertilizer could help quickly establishing a self-maintaining vegetation system in the primary process of reclamation.

Since the indiscriminate disposal of pig slurry can cause not only air pollution and bad odours but also nutrient pollution of ground waters and superficial waters, composting is sometimes used as one environmentally acceptable method for recycling pig manure. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of composting pig slurry on its sanitation (evaluated by ecotoxicity assays and pathogen content determination), as well as to determine the effect of a carbon-rich bulking agent (wood shavings, WS) and the starting C/N ratio on the changes undergone by different chemical (volatile organic matter, C and N fractions) and microbiological (microbial biomass C, ATP, dehydrogenase activity, urease, protease, phosphatase, and beta-glucosidase activities) parameters during composting. Pig slurry mixed with bulking agent (P+WS) and the solid faction separated from it, both with (PSF+WS) and without bulking agent (PSF), were composted for 13 weeks. Samples for analysis were taken from composting piles at the start of the process and at 3, 6, 9, and 13 weeks after the beginning of composting. The total organic carbon, water soluble C and ammonium content decreased with composting, while Kjeldahl N and nitrate content increased. The nitrification process in the PSF+WS pile was more intense than in the PSF or P+WS composting piles. The pathogen content decreased with composting, as did phytotoxic compounds, while the germination index increased with compost age. Piles with bulking agent showed higher values of basal respiration, microbial biomass carbon, ATP and hydrolase activities during the composting process than piles without bulking agent.

Two-phase olive mill waste (TPOMW) is a semisolid sludge generated during the extraction of olive oil by the two-phase centrifugation system. Among all the available disposal options, composting is gaining interest as a sustainable strategy to recycle TPOMW for agricultural purposes. The quality of compost for agronomical use depends on the degree of organic matter stabilization, but despite several studies on the topic, there is not a single method available which alone can give a certain indication of compost stability. In addition, information on the biological and biochemical properties, including the enzymatic activity (EA) of compost, is rare. The aim of this work was to investigate the suitability of some enzymatic activities (beta-glucosidase, arylsulphatase, acid-phosphatase, alkaline-phosphatase, urease and fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis (FDA)) as parameters to evaluate organic matter stability during the composting of TPOMW. These enzymatic indices were also compared to conventional stability indices. For this purpose two composting piles were prepared by mixing TPOMW with sheep manure and grape stalks in different proportions, with forced aeration and occasional turnings. The composting of TPOMW followed the common pattern reported previously for this kind of material with a reduction of 40-50% of organic matter, a gradual increase in pH, disappearance of phytotoxicity and formation of humic-like C. All EA increased during composting except acid-phosphatase. Significant correlations were found between EA and some important conventional stability indices indicating that EA can be a simple and reliable tool to determine the degree of stability of TPOMW composts.

A biological comparison based on differences in the starting material for composting processes was made. Mesophilic aerobic microbiota, fungi, actinomycetes and hemicellulolytic microorganisms reached significantly higher levels in the MSW final product. The population of cellulolytic microorganisms did not show a clear trend, although it was more numerous in the HW piles. Counts for N(2)-fixing and ammonifying bacteria were significantly higher in the SS pile at the early stages of the process, while populations tended to become equal as time progressed. The lowest populations were detected for nitrifying bacteria, with higher but not always significant levels for the SS pile. beta-Glucosidase and phosphatase activities were higher in the SS pile at the early stages. Protease reached its maximum activity during the bio-oxidative phase and final stages in the HW and MSW piles, respectively. Dehydrogenase activity, with an occasional high level for the MSW at the beginning of the process, was almost inexistent since the end of the bio-oxidative phase. On the contrary, urease showed higher levels at the final stage of the process, with the MSW pile showing the greatest levels most of the time. According to these results, the nature of the starting material causes differences in biological parameters.
