We demonstrate selective adsorption and alignment of
ZnO
nanowires on patterned poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) thin layers with (aminopropyl)siloxane self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). Light stamping lithography (LSL) was used to prepare patterned PDMS thin layers as neutral passivation regions on Si substrates. (3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane-based SAMs were selectively formed only on regions exposing the silanol groups of the Si substrates. The patterned positively charged amino groups define and direct the selective adsorption of
ZnO
nanowires with negative surface charges in the protic solvent. This procedure can be adopted in automated printing machines that generate patterned
ZnO
-nanowire arrays on large-area substrates. To demonstrate its usefulness, the LSL method was applied to prepare
ZnO
-nanowire transistor arrays on 4-in. Si wafers.

ZnO
nanowires (NWs) with a ZnS coating are synthesized in order to modify the surface without changing the diameter of the NWs. They have the wurtzite
ZnO
at the core and a cubic ZnS at the outer layer. The NWs show a sharp ultraviolet and a broad visible emission of the photoluminescence spectra. Surface modification has led to a change in the position of the maxima of the visible emission in
ZnO
-ZnS NWs. The photocarrier relaxation under steady UV illumination occurs in
ZnO
NW arrays but is absent in
ZnO
-ZnS NW arrays. The dark current value for both type of NWs are similar, whereas the photocurrent value is much higher in the surface-modified NWs. Higher photocurrent value indicates a transport of the photogenerated carriers from the ZnS layer to
ZnO
during UV illumination. The carrier transport mechanism is proposed through a model.

Patterned and continuous thin films of conductive Al-doped zinc oxide (
ZnO
:Al) were prepared on different substrates from a polymeric precursor solution. Their electric conductivity and light transmittance (for visible and UV light) was measured at room temperature. By means of a simple device, conductive
ZnO
:Al films with high fidelity patterns with features of 2-20 microm width could be obtained by simply micromolding the liquid precursor film prior to heat treatment. The individual features were interconnected by a very thin residual
ZnO
layer.

A simple strategy, based on ultrafast heating of polystyrene microspheres infiltrated with a zinc acetate solution, is employed here for preparing
ZnO
microcontainers with femtoliter capacity. Their potential exploitation in micro-Raman assays for basic studies in bio- and nanotechnology is tested in different proof-of-concept experiments concerning the in situ analysis of l-glutathione crystals and gold-yeast cytochrome c bioconjugates. The
ZnO
microcontainers are also used as scaffolds for atomic layer deposition of TiO(2) overlayers with a fine-tuning of thickness and morphology. The resulting
ZnO
/TiO(2) heterostructures are tested in different photocatalytic experiments involving degradation and laser-induced conversion of methylene blue.

A glass substrate, coated with a Parylene film, was coated with
ZnO
by three different methods: ultrasound, microwave, and microwave-plasma irradiation. These coating modes are simple, efficient, and environmentally friendly one-step processes. The structure of the coated products was characterized and compared using methods such as XRD, HR-SEM, EDS, RBS, and optical spectroscopy. Coating by
ZnO
nanoparticles was achieved for all three approaches. The products were found to differ in their particle sizes, coating thickness, and depth of penetration. All of the
ZnO
-Parylene-glass composites demonstrated a significant antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (Gram negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram positive) strains.

Disk-shaped semiconductor nanostructures provide enhanced architectures for low-threshold whispering gallery mode (WGM) lasing with the potential for on-chip nanophotonic integration. Unlike cavities that lase via Fabry-Perot modes, WGM structures utilize low-loss, total internal reflection of the optical mode along the circumference of the structure, which effectively reduces the volume of gain material required for lasing. As a result, circularly resonant cavities provide much higher quality (Q) factors than lower reflection linear cavities, which makes nanodisks an ideal platform to investigate lasing nanostructures smaller than the free-space wavelength of light (i.e., subwavelength laser). Here we report the bottom-up synthesis and single-mode lasing properties of individual
ZnO
disks with diameters from 280 to 900 nm and show finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations of the whispering gallery mode inside subwavelength diameter disks. These results demonstrate ultraviolet WGM lasing in chemically synthesized, isolated nanostructures with subwavelength diameters.

Three-phase-percolative composites with
ZnO
radial nanoclusters (R-
ZnO
) and BaTiO(3) (BT) nanoparticles embedded into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) were prepared by using a simple blending and hot-molding technique. The BT + PVDF composite with a volume fraction of 30 vol % BT particles were employed as a thermoplastic-ceramic matrix. Compared with the two-phase-percolative composites of R-
ZnO
/PVDF, the three-phase-percolative (R-
ZnO
/(BT + PVDF)) composites showed enhanced dielectric constant and decreased dielectric loss. The percolation theory was used to explain the experimental results. The increased percolation threshold was studied in detail, and the thermal stability was also investigated.

Monodispersed SiO(2)-shell/
ZnO
-core composite nanospheres have been prepared in an oil-in-water microemulsion system. By using cyclohexane as the oil phase and Triton X-100 as the surfactant, composite nanospheres with high core loading levels and tunable shell thickness were obtained. Utilization of PVP capping agent on
ZnO
allowed the synthesis of composite nanospheres without forming any coreless SiO(2) spheres or shell-less
ZnO
particles. The photoactivity of
ZnO
nanoparticles was greatly reduced by SiO(2)-coating, which enables their applications as durable, safe, and nonreactive UV blockers in plastics, coating, and other products.

ZnO
nanostructures were deposited on flexible polymer sheet and cotton fabrics at room temperature by activated reactive evaporation. Room-temperature photoluminescence spectrum of
ZnO
nanostructured film exhibited a week intrinsic UV emission and a strong broad yellow-orange visible emission. TEM and HRTEM studies show that the grown nanostructures are crystalline in nature and their growth direction was identified to be along [002].
ZnO
nanostructures grown on the copper-coated flexible polymer sheets exhibited stable field-emission characteristics with a threshold voltage of 2.74 V/mum (250 muA) and a very large field enhancement factor (beta) of 23,213. Cotton fabric coated with
ZnO
nanostructures show an excellent antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria (Gram positive), and approximately 73% reduction in the bacterial population is achieved compared to uncoated fabrics after 4 h in viability. Using a shadow mask technique, we also selectively deposited the nanostructures at room temperature on polymer substrates.

/CdTe core-shell nanocable arrays-on-indium tin oxide (ITO) are fabricated by electrochemical deposition of CdTe on
ZnO
nanorod arrays in an electrolyte close to neutral pH. By adjusting the total charge quantity applied during deposition, the CdTe shell thickness can be tuned from several tens to hundreds of nanometers. The CdTe shell, which has a zinc-blende structure, is very dense and uniform both radially and along the axial direction of the nanocables, and forms an intact interface with the wurtzite
ZnO
nanorod core. The absorption of the CdTe shell above its band gap ( approximately 1.5 eV) and the type II band alignment between the CdTe shell and the
ZnO
core, respectively, demonstrated by absorption and photoluminescence measurements, make a nanocable array-on-ITO architecture a promising photoelectrode with excellent photovoltaic properties for solar energy applications. A photocurrent density of approximately 5.9 mA/cm(2) has been obtained under visible light illumination of 100 mW cm(-2) with zero bias potential (vs saturated calomel electrode). The neutral electrodeposition method can be generally used for plating CdTe on nanostructures made of different materials, which would be of interest in various applications.
