A novel organically templated cobalt-vanadium oxalate, (C(2)H(10)N(2))[Co(2)(C(2)O(4))V(4)O(12)], was synthesized under mild hydrothermal conditions and characterized by single-crystal/powder X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The compound crystallizes in an orthorhombic system with space group Cmcm and cell parameters a = 11.527(2) A, b = 9.9476(18) A, c = 14.780(3) A. The compound possesses 3-dimensional topologies with sodalite analogue structure and is constructed by C(2)O(4)-incorporated beta cage units. On the basis of the results of TG/DTA analyses, the structure is thermally stable up to approximately 573 K.

A series of amphiphilic amine hydrochloride salts of B-polymethylated (camouflaged) (aminoalkyl)- and bis(aminoalkyl)carboranes have been designed and synthesized in high yield for the purpose of constructing novel carborane-based nanomaterials. Due to the distinct separation of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions within each salt, the mono- and disubstituted amphiphiles spontaneously self-assembled upon sonication into rod-shape micro/nanostructures in aqueous solutions. The effects of concentration, method of dispersion, solvent, chain length, counterion, ionic charge, and underlying carborane cage structure on the formation of the these rod products were investigated. The microrods have been studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), optical microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA), and FTIR. For the first time, this work clearly demonstrates the self-assembly of B-polymethylated carboranes into supramolecular structures.

Glucocorticoid-induced TNF receptor family related protein (GITR) is a member of the TNFR superfamily. Previous studies have shown that in vivo administration of a GITR agonistic Ab (DTA-1) is able to overcome tolerance and induce tumor rejection in several murine syngeneic tumor models. However, little is known about the in vivo targets and the mechanisms of how this tolerance is overcome in a tumor-bearing host, nor is much known about how the immune network is regulated to achieve this antitumor response. In this study, we demonstrate that the in vivo ligation of GITR on CD4(+) effector T cells renders them refractory to suppression by regulatory T (T(reg)) cells in the CT26 tumor-bearing mouse. GITR engagement on T(reg) cells does not appear to directly abrogate their suppressive function; rather, it increases the expansion of T(reg) cells and promotes IL-10 production, a cytokine important for their suppressive function. Moreover, CD4(+) effector T cells play a crucial role in mediating DTA-1-induced immune activation and expansion of CD8(+), NK, and B cells in the tumor-draining lymph nodes. This includes increased CD69 expression on all of these subsets. In addition, NK and tumor-specific CD8(+) T cells are generated that are cytolytic, which show increased intracellular IFN-gamma production and CD107a mobilization, the latter a hallmark of cytolytic activities that lead to tumor killing.

The one-pot synthesis of an unsymmetrical double-decker siloxane with a novel structure via the reaction of double-decker tetrasodiumsilanolate with 1 equiv. of dichlorotetraphenyldisiloxane in the presence of an acid is reported herein for the first time. The target compound bearing all phenyl substituents on the unsymmetrical siloxane structure was successfully obtained, as confirmed by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, 29Si-NMR, IR, MALDI-TOF, and X-ray crystallography analyses. Additionally, the thermal properties of the product were evaluated by TG/DTA and compared with those of other siloxane cage compounds.
