Recently we conducted investigations in biological wastes because large pile-up storage of waste wood chips and others caused many fires in Japan. This paper shows the experimental results on wood chips with thermal analysis, by using a Thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and micro calorimeters, and as well with spontaneous ignition measurements, such as a UN wire mesh cube tester and a spontaneous ignition tester (SIT). Exothermic reaction of wood chips was observed during 45-60 degrees C only by the high sensitive microcalorimeters,
TAM
and MS 80. This reaction is far apart from the second major reaction by oxidation and is not easy to be recognized by the conventional detectors, like the TG-
DTA
and the wire mesh cube tester, because their sensitivity cannot meet the strict requirement. Correspondingly, experimental results under the adiabatic condition in the SIT confirmed this theory, in which the onset temperature of spontaneous ignition of wood chips was measured as 50-80 degrees C. This implies that the weak initial reaction at ambient temperatures mainly results from microbial fermentation in the presence of its inherent moisture and possibly gives rise to the further intense combustion sustained by a chemical reaction if the heat cannot be removed from the large scale storage of wood chips.

Tumor associated macrophages and tumor infiltrating regulatory T cells greatly hamper host-protective antitumor responses. Therefore, we utilized a novel immunomodulator, heat-killed
Mycobacterium indicus pranii
(
Mw
), to repolarize
TAM
and an agonistic GITR antibody (
DTA
-1) to reduce intratumoral regulatory T cell frequency for generation of a host-protective antitumor response. Although, the combination of
Mw
and
DTA
-1was found to be effective against advanced stage tumors, however,
Mw
or
DTA
-1 failed to do so when administered individually. The presence of high level of regulatory T cells abrogated the only
Mw
induced antitumor functions, whereas only
DTA
-1 treatment was found to be ineffective due to its inability to induce
TAM
repolarization
in vivo.
The combination therapy was found to be effective since
DTA
-1 treatment reduced the frequency of regulatory T cells to such an extent where they could not attenuate
Mw
induced
TAM
repolarization
in vivo.
Therefore, the combination therapy involving
Mw
and
DTA
-1 may be utilized to the success of advanced stage solid tumor immunotherapies.

MSWI(Municipal solid waste incineration) fly ash as hazardous wastes usually is treated properly with OPC(ordinary Portland cement) based binders prior to being disposed in security landfill, but some toxic elements present poor stability in its highly alkaline environment. This study developed a novel solidification/stabilization technology based on MgO-SiO

O (M-S-H) cementious material with compatibility with contaminants for MSWI fly ash encapsulation. Compressive strength and leaching toxicity tests were undertaken to evaluate the immobilization effect of MSWI fly ash treated with M-S-H matrix. And

/TGA and SEM techniques were employed to explore hydration process and microstructure morphology of M-S-H solidified body. Results demonstrated that M-S-H cement matrix played a positive impact on the immobilization of heavy metals, and the immobilization rate of Cd, Pb and Zn was 97.5%, 99.8% and 98.7%, which was far more than that fixed in Portland cement. The incorporation of MSWI fly ash inhibited the hydration process of M-S-H matrix on the whole, which was mainly due to its poor pozzolanic activity. Moreover, there were some new hydration phases including CdSiO

generated and some MSWI fly ash embedded in the core-shell structure of M-S-H matrix in depth. These results suggested that heavy metals of MSWI fly ash were mainly fixed in M-S-H solidified bodies by physical encapsulation, isomorphous replacement and chemical precipitation. Overall, this study demonstrated that M-S-H matrix is a promising candidate that can serve as low-carbon and high-efficient materials for hazardous MSWI fly ash.
