After irradiation of chick embryos and chicks (1,000 rad), the activity of some erythrocyte enzymes undergoes significant changes. During the 1st day after irradiation of chick embryos, the activity of lactate dehydrogenase leucine aminopeptidase and
glutamate pyruvate transaminase
decreases. At the 3rd day, the decrease in the activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and acid phosphatase is also observed. In irradiated chicks, the activity of lactate dehydrogenase, leucine aminopeptidase and
aldolase
decreases within the 1st and the 3rd days, the decrease being most significant for the former two enzymes. At later period (10 and 15 days after irradiation), most significant decrease was found in the activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. The activity of the same enzymes in the blood plasma of irradiated embryos and chicks increases, the increase being most evident for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase.

Biochemical method was adopted to examine 10 kinds of histologic enzyme spectrum activities in gastric intestinal metaplasia, carcinoma and normal or superficial gastritis mucosa taken from different sites from 17 fresh surgical specimens of stomach. The enzymes are

), alkaline phosphatase (AKP), acid phosphatase (ACP), r-glutamyl-transpeptidase (gamma-GT). Among glycolytic enzymes the content of
ALD
, PYK in intestinal metaplasia were 24.5 u and 24.6 u respectively, which were higher than those in the normal mucosa (15.7, 18.0) and lower than carcinoma (28.4, 29.6) (P less than 0.01-0.05). The content of CPK in intestinal metaplasia was lower (218.5 u) than that in the normal (463.9 u) and higher than that in carcinoma (110.3 u) (P less than 0.01). Among protease and amino acid enzymes the content of HBD in intestinal metaplasia was lower (108.2 u) than those in the normal (221.3 u) and carcinoma (113.9 u) (P less than 0.05). The content of
GPT
in intestinal metaplasia was (6.7 u) which was lower than that in the normal (9.4 u) and higher than that in carcinoma (3.7 u) (P less than 0.01). The above results could provide reference indices for judging the potential malignancy of gastric intestinal metaplasia.

It is well established that caloric restriction extends life span and significantly retards the rate of occurrence of most age-associated degenerative disease processes. A paucity of data exists relative to the mechanisms by which caloric restriction accomplishes these events. We have examined the effect of caloric restriction in rats on several hepatic enzymes of intermediary metabolism. The activities of glycolytic and supporting enzymes including lactate dehydrogenase, pyruvate kinase, sorbitol dehydrogenase, and alcohol dehydrogenase were all decreased in response to caloric restriction. and creatine phosphokinase were not altered. Likewise, enzymes associated with lipid metabolism (malic enzyme and glycerokinase) were reduced (fatty acid synthetase was reduced, but not to a statistically significant degree). Activities of enzymes supporting gluconeogenesis (glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, tyrosine aminotransferase,
glutamate pyruvate transaminase
, glutamate dehydrogenase, amino acid oxidase, malate dehydrogenase, and glucose 6-phosphatase) were either unchanged or increased significantly by caloric restriction. Glucagon levels were decreased. Comparisons between young ad libitum fed and older calorically restricted rats revealed similar but not identical metabolic activity. These results suggest that caloric restriction produces an effect on intermediary metabolism, favoring the role of glucagon and glucose synthesis; but limiting the role of insulin and glucose catabolism in the liver. The former observation provides for the efficient support of peripheral tissues and the latter a level of energy production necessary only for self maintenance. Limited lipid metabolism suggests decreased potential for fatty acid epoxide formation and free radical damage to cellular macromolecules. Additionally, caloric restriction may delay the progressive age associated changes in the activities of some of the enzymes investigated.

), creatine phosphokinase (CPK), guanase, and cholinesterase (CE). The calculation of the correlation coefficients and the regression lines revealed that GOT,
GPT
, LDH,
ALD
, and guanase raised their activity following treatment of the test animals up to a higher extent and at a higher rate. Lower rate changes were those in the activity of AP, leucinaminopeptidase, and CE. No changes whatever were found in the activity of CPK. On the basis of these results the diagnostic value is determined of both the individual enzymes and the enzyme constellation as a whole.

Used were 14 two-month-old lambs divided into test groups of 4 animals each and a control group of two lambs. In the lambs of three of the test groups infected with 4000, 7000, and 30 000 T. ovis eggs, respectively, no signs were observed of enhanced serum enzyme activity up to the 35th day following infection. Later on there was a drop of the activity of these enzymes however, with the exception of alkaline phosphatase the values of all studied serum enzymes remained higher than the normal ones up to the end of the experiment.

The generation of C2- and C3-deuterated lactic acid produced by rat parotid cells exposed to [1-13C] glucose, [2-13C]glucose, and [6-13C]glucose in the presence of D2O was assessed by 13C NMR. The results indicated that the escape from deuteration amounted to about 46% at the phosphoglucoisomerase level, 100% at the phosphomannoisomerase level, 65% in the reactions catalyzed by
phosphofructoaldolase
and triose phosphate isomerase, and 58% at the level of
glutamate pyruvate transaminase
. Such high values are considered to support a possible enzyme-to-enzyme tunneling of metabolic intermediates at selected sites in the glycolytic pathway.
