In 28 dogs the distal articular cartilage of the femur was removed and the regenerating articular surface on the 70th postoperative day was studied histochemically for hexokinase, glucose-6-phosphatase, phosphohexose-isomerase, fructose-1, 6-diphosphatase,
aldolase
, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase isoenzymes, phosphoglucomutase, phosphorylase, glycogen synthetase, UDP--glucose dehydrogenase, and UDP-glucuronic acid-4-epimerase. The articular surface consisted of fibrous tissue and of cartilage islets. The latter contained cells differentiating into cartilage and young chondrocytes. The glycolytic enzymes reacted positively in the regenerative articular surface. Enzyme activities were higher in the cells (particularly the chondroblasts and young chondrocytes) of the cartilage islets than in the connective tissue. In the cells differentiations into cartilage, beside the LDH isoenzymes characteristic of glycolysis, a significant
LDH1
and LDH2 activity was observed. At the same site the presence of fructose-1, 6-diphosphatase-activity could be assumed, but there was no glucose-6-phosphatase activity. Glycogen synthesis proceeded in the cells of the cartilage islets and UDP-glucuronic acid-4-epimerase activity was observed in the differentiated cells. UDP-glucose dehydrogenase activity was positive in every section of the articular surface.

It is shown that on the 27-30th day of pregnancy in the myometrium cytoplasm of female rabbits the content of proteins, the
aldolase
(EC 4.1.2.7) and lactate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.27) activities are increased. Redistribution between fractions of certain lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isoenzymes is observed: the fraction of LDH4--5 increases and that of
LDH1
--2 decreases, and the ATPase (EC 3.6.1.3) activity lowers as well. A rise in the amount of proteins in the female rabbits myometrium cytoplasm in the last days of pregnancy and the growing fraction of LDH4--5 testify to the myometrium enchanced contractility during the labour.

Serum lactate dehydrogenase isoenzymes, creatine phosphokinase and
aldolase
activity were determined in healthy control subjects and in lepromatous and tuberculoid leprosy patients from Ethiopia. Sera from lepromatous patients showed a higher total LDH activity compared with control subject. The values for tuberculoid leprosy patients were similar to those of controls. Sera from normal healthy controls showed a higher proportion of LDH-H form (72%) while lepromatous leprosy patient's sera exhibited a higher proportion of
LDH-M
form (55%). Tuberculoid leprosy patients showed a pattern similar to that of healthy controls. A possible significance of these observations is discussed. No significant variations were observed in fructose-1,6-diphosphate
aldolase
activity within the different types of disease and controls. Although creatine phosphokinase levels in different types of leprosy decreased significantly from those of normal healthy, it falls within the reported variation of the activity in normal sera.

The effect of chronic low-dose (0.6 rad/day) 137Cs gamma-irradiation of mice was studied. It was shown that radiation causes changes in the kinetic parameters (Vmax, KM, Vmax/KM) and isoenzyme patterns of
aldolase
and lactate dehydrogenase of the brain cytoplasm of mice. The kinetic properties of both enzymes changes in 1, 2, 4 and 9 days after irradiation. The character of changes in Vmax of these enzymes depends on the original Vmax values. The level of the predominant
LDH1
(H4) form increases while that of the specific tissular form (C4) decreases (acute on the 9th day). Different levels of sensitivity of
aldolase
, LDH, and their isoenzymes to low-doses of low-rate gamma-irradiation were observed.

The present study examined the cellular localization of monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs), glucose transporters (GLUTs), and some glycolysis-related molecules in the murine female genital tract to demonstrate existence of lactate/pyruvate-dependent energy systems. MCT1, a major MCT subtype, was localized selectively in the ovarian granulosa, oviductal-ciliated cells, and vaginal epithelium; all localizations were associated with intense expressions of glycolytic enzymes. MCT1 was localized in the cell membrane of granulosa cells, including fine processes extending from cumulus cells toward oocytes. The cumulus cells and oocytes showed intense signals for lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)-A and -B, respectively. The basolateral membrane of oviductal-ciliated cells expressed MCT4 as well as MCT1, while adjacent non-ciliated cells contained an intense immunoreactivity for
aldolase
-C, a glycolytic enzyme. The expression of GLUTs in the ovary was generally weak with an intense expression of GLUT1 only in some vascular endothelia. The oviductal epithelium expressed GLUT1 and GLUT3, respectively, in the basolateral and apical membrane of non-ciliated cells. In the vagina, the basal layers of epithelium were immunolabeled for MCT1 with the entire length of cell membrane, and expressed abundantly both GLUT1 and
LDH-A
. The findings correspond well with the rich existence of lactate in the genital fluids and strongly suggest the active transport of lactate/pyruvate in the female reproductive tract, which provides favorable conditions for oocytes, sperms, and zygotes.
