In 28 dogs the distal articular cartilage of the femur was removed and the regenerating articular surface on the 70th postoperative day was studied histochemically for hexokinase, glucose-6-phosphatase, phosphohexose-isomerase, fructose-1, 6-diphosphatase,
aldolase
, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase isoenzymes, phosphoglucomutase, phosphorylase, glycogen synthetase, UDP--glucose dehydrogenase, and UDP-glucuronic acid-4-epimerase. The articular surface consisted of fibrous tissue and of cartilage islets. The latter contained cells differentiating into cartilage and young chondrocytes. The glycolytic enzymes reacted positively in the regenerative articular surface. Enzyme activities were higher in the cells (particularly the chondroblasts and young chondrocytes) of the cartilage islets than in the connective tissue. In the cells differentiations into cartilage, beside the
LDH
isoenzymes characteristic of glycolysis, a significant LDH1 and LDH2 activity was observed. At the same site the presence of fructose-1, 6-diphosphatase-activity could be assumed, but there was no glucose-6-phosphatase activity. Glycogen synthesis proceeded in the cells of the cartilage islets and UDP-glucuronic acid-4-epimerase activity was observed in the differentiated cells. UDP-glucose dehydrogenase activity was positive in every section of the articular surface.

Twenty-three psychiatric patients were investigated during electroconvulsive treatment in relaxation. The blood gases, pH and serum bicarbonate levels in blood samples from the internal jugular vein and the femoral artery were measured radiometrically. The
LDH
fractions were separated electrophoretically and their activity, along with the activity of
aldolase
, was then determined on test materials. EEG recordings were made during the seizure and also during postconvulsive restitution. The following conclusions were drawn: (1) There was no evidence of anoxic anoxia in the brain during and after seizures. (2) A close relationship was found between the corresponding phases of electrical activity and brain metabolism as indicated by the blood gas changes during postconvulsive restitution. (3) On the basis of the increased glycolytic activity in the sera it is probable that glucose metabolism was shifted in the anaerobic direction during postconvulsive restitution of the brain tissues.

210 male patients hospitalized for cardiac rehabilitation have been studied. As a result of age matching the sample was reduced to 190 patients: 72 patients with myocardial infarction, 90 patients with functional cardiovascular diseases, and 28 patients with angina pectoris. At the beginning and at the end of the 4 to 6 week rehabilitation program total lipids, cholesterol, triglycerides, phosphatides, GOT, GPT,
LDH
, HBDH, cholinesterase,
aldolase
, blood sugar, creatinine, electrolytes, hemoglobin, erythrocytes, leukozytes, and catecholamines were measured. In addition to the statistical comparison of the three groups and their specific change patterns, effects of body weight reduction and improvement of physical fitness were analyzed. The decrease of lipids is especially associated with weight reduction, whereas the decrease of enzyme activity and electrolyte concentration is accompanied as well with weight reduction as with the improvement of physical fitness.

Pregnant cows in the dry period were given methionine at the rate of 0.5 cent of the dry matter of the ration 20 days before parturition. It was shown that such animals manifest no ketosis and other disturbances in the liver. High-producing, lactating cows that were offered DL-methionine orally at 0.6 per cent in the first 90 day of the lactation period did not likewise develop ketosis and other liver troubles, while animals that were deprived from this amino acid were affected up to 10 per cent. The blood levels of sugar, ketone bodies, total lipids and protein, bilirubin, SGOT, SGPT,
LDH
, and
aldolase
were influenced positively by the administration of methionine to high-producing cows. The total amount of amino acids in the blood of lactating cows rose, methionine reaching 80 per cent above the ordinary level when diets containing synthetic methionine were fed to the animals.

isoenzymes in the plasma the stage of the acute and chronic hepatitis can be well established. The suitable use of modern statistic methods (multivariate analysis) allows the characterisation, recognition and separation of the groups of disease acute, chronic persisting, chronic aggressive hepatitis and liver cirrhosis as well as the proof of transition forms and severe courses. In acute hepatitides with protracted course under prednisolone therapy in contrast to histology already after a short time changes of the isoenzymes in the hepatic tissue and in the plasma are shown. Apparently the isoenzymes are sensitive indicators of intracellular metabolic processes.

100 patients who got over a virus hepatitis underwent a bicycle ergometry. At the beginning and at the end of the experiment as well as 24 hours after this the isoenzymes of
aldolase
, GOT and
LDH
in the plasma were determined by means of kinetic methods. On the basis of the activities of the isoenzymes for the test persons (children and adults of either sex) an arrangement in the groups pathologic--suspicious--normal can be carried out which is compared with the physiologic parameters and the clinic. The results of bicycle ergometry much differ. High effects without pathological changes of the activities of isoenzymes are an objective criterion of the quick, riskless rehabilitation of the test persons.

The levels of glycolytic enzymes,
aldolase
, phosphohexose isomerase and lactic dehydrogenase, the latter as total and isozymes, were determined in the vitreous and aqueous humors and sera as well as in lens-saline extracts of the cat, Rhesus monkey, guinea pig, rabbit, rat and cattle. Although wide species differences were noted, the levels were generally lower in the aqueous as compared to the vitreous and serum. Aldolase and phosphohexose isomerase were invariably elevated in the lens of most species. The
LDH
isozyme patterns were quite unique in regard to the fluids and the species. The ratios of enzyme contents of the intraocular fluids to the respective sera were calculated and the findings compared. As tested in a few species, no remarkable enzyme differences could be discerned as a result of prior dark or light adaptation of the eyes.

Tarsal degenerative joint disease (DJD) in 27 cattle was classified as primary or secondary based on age, joint conformation defects, faulty hindlimb alignment, or history of trauma to the affected joint(s). Results of blood and synovial fluid analysis for cattle affected with primary or secondary tarsal DJD were grouped in compilation of data. Cattle with tarsal DJD had significantly (P smaller than 0.01) reduced hemoglobin (Hb) content in comparison to that in control cattle. There was highly significant (P smaller than 0.001) reduction in packed cell volume (PCV). A significant difference was not determined for mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) values of the 2 groups of cattle. Total white blood cell (WBC) counts closely paralleled each other, although mean proportion of neutrophils was significantly (P smaller than 0.05) greater in cattle affected with tarsal DJD, as were mean proportion of lymphocytes (P smaller than 0.02). Synovial fluid samples were analyzed for physical, biochemical, and cytologic properties. Statistical comparisons were made between values determined for arthritic cattle and control cattle. All samples from cattle with tarsal DJD were transudative. Opacity and flocculation were attributed to the presence of cartilaginous fragments and fibrils. There was significant correlation between increased relative viscosity (RV) and higher grades of mucinous precipitate quality (MPQ; r = +0.294, P smaller than 0.05) for all cattle. Mean alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity for arthritic cattle was significantly (P smaller than 0.001) reduced, as was the mean activity for lactic dehydrogenase (
LDH
; P smaller than 0.05). The mean
aldolase
(
ALD
) activity for arthritic cattle was increased, whereas mean activity values for glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) were reduced. Samples from arthritic cattle had reduced total leukocyte counts and significantly (P smaller than 0.05) increased proportion of macrophages in comparison to the values in control cattle.

Serum lactate dehydrogenase isoenzymes, creatine phosphokinase and
aldolase
activity were determined in healthy control subjects and in lepromatous and tuberculoid leprosy patients from Ethiopia. Sera from lepromatous patients showed a higher total
LDH
activity compared with control subject. The values for tuberculoid leprosy patients were similar to those of controls. Sera from normal healthy controls showed a higher proportion of LDH-H form (72%) while lepromatous leprosy patient's sera exhibited a higher proportion of LDH-M form (55%). Tuberculoid leprosy patients showed a pattern similar to that of healthy controls. A possible significance of these observations is discussed. No significant variations were observed in fructose-1,6-diphosphate
aldolase
activity within the different types of disease and controls. Although creatine phosphokinase levels in different types of leprosy decreased significantly from those of normal healthy, it falls within the reported variation of the activity in normal sera.

of the uterine muscle. The animals were divided into three groups: first-15 nonpregnant cats, second-10 pregnant cats at the first half of pregnancy and third-10 pregnant cats at the second half of pregnancy. He used a piece of uterine muscle from which proteins were extracted by solutions of potasium iodide with various strength. The total protein was determined by the method of Loury, but the sarcoplasmic proteins were examined electrophoretically. Electrolytes were estimated by flame photometer. The enzyme activity was examined by the reagents of "Boehringer". There was an increase of the amount of myosin and of the enzyme active sarcoplasmic protein fraction in the myometrium of pregnant animals. Potasium was increased in the uterine muscle during pregnancy, but sodium decreased. Enxyme activity of ALD, GOT and GPT was the highest in animals from the second group, but that of
LDH
-in the third group.
