Blood serum was used of 49 rams and 20 ewew infected with Brucell ovis. The study on the total protein and the protein fractions of rams revealed that there existed gamma-globulinemia, the percent of the gamma-globulin rise showing a positive correlation with the morphologic changes in the testes. The alfa-globulins were found to rise immediately following the experimental infecting of the sheep for about a month, after which they came back to normal. In experimental infection the activity of the
alkaline phosphatase
,
aldolase
, glutamate-oxalacetate-transaminase, and glutamate-pyruvate-transaminase of the blood serum showed transient characteristic changes, having, however, no diagnostic value.

Hepatocytes from adult rats were maintained in primary culture for up to 10-13 days on nylon meshes coated with a thin layer of rat tail collagen gel. Their ultrastructure closely resembled that of the liver parenchymal cell in vivo, but hepatocytes in late culture exhibited a pronounced buildup of microfilaments beneath their apical cell surface. Hepatocytes in early and late cultures secreted albumin, transferrin, and alpha1-acid glycoprotein into the medium; they exhibited a 7- to 10-fold induction of tyrosine aminotransferase activity by dexamethasone; and they expressed an
alkaline phosphatase
that was similar to that of normal rat liver with respect to its inhibition by the liver enzyme inhibitor L-homoarginine. In addition, the hepatocytes in culture demonstrated phenotypic changes characteristic of fetal liver parenchymal cells. These changes, which paralleled an increase in DNA synthesis, included the expression of and linear increase in the activity of the fetal liver cell enzyme gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, an increased production of alpha1-fetoprotein, and a change in the substrate specificity of
fructose-bisphosphate aldolase
to that of the fetal liver isozyme.

Male rats were housed singly in metabolic cages, injected i.v. with cephaloridine, 24 h urine samples collected successively; then the rats were killed for obtaining the kidneys of corresponding animals. The concentrations of protein, aminopeptidase (AP),
alkaline phosphatase
(aPP), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), and
aldolase
(
ALD
) were determined in urine and the percentages of injured proximal tubules counted in sections stained for aPP. The results from individual animals were: (1) After placing animals singly in metabolic cages large but not systematic changes of urinary enzyme concentrations occurred. After 6-10 days the enzymes reached steady state levels. (2) After a single injection of cephaloridine a dose dependent injury of proximal tubules was observed, the urinary LDH content correlating best with the tubular injury (r greater than 0.93) and giving up to 1,000 fold increases above normal values. (3) A circadian rhythm of the susceptibility of rat kidney for cephaloridine was observed, the smallest response was seen when the animals were injected at 7 a.m. and the largest after injection at 7 p.m. (4) In subacute toxicity studies urinary LDH was increased on day 2 above the extent after a single dose, but declined on day 3 to reach normal levels after 8 to 10 days (time of sacrifice). The kidneys revealed practically normal histology. The other enzymes studied had also returned to normal values. This indicates some adaptation mechanism.

In 71 patients with lymphogranulomatosis (35 males and 36 females aged from 19 to 67 years) the hepatic function was studied prior to and during the cytostatic treatment. There were found considerable disturbances in the liver functioning and parallelism between the activity of the mentioned enzymes and the presence of intoxication, the enlarged liver size and intensity of the pathological process. During the treatment in some patients the activity of the enzymes under study was decreased or normalized. Changes in the activity of blood transminase,
aldolase
and
alkaline phosphatase
would reflect the gravity of destructive processes and disturbances in the liver function in patients with lymphogranulomatosis. The data obtained are of certain value for the treatment and prognosis of the disease.

Decrease in the hepatotoxic effect of acrylonitrile after preadministration of antioxidants appears to be a result of stimulation of lipid peroxidation, preventing the toxic effect of this industrially important substance.

The present study was designed to analyze the effects of a short term stress on the quantitative levels of
alkaline phosphatase
(AP), creatine phosphokinase (CK),
aldolase
(
ALD
), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and lactate dehydrogenase-1-isoenzyme (LDH 1) during 24 h after stress. For all the enzymes studied higher values for the activity were found due to stress in comparison to the activity level before the stress. The period during the 24 h after stress to reach maximum activity depends on the enzyme and in part on the sex of the animal.

The permeability of artificial lipid membranes for six enzymes, e.g. RNAse, trypsin, amylase,
aldolase
, invertase and
alkaline phosphatase
, was studied. The permeability coefficient values for these enzymes were calculated. It was shown that the penetration process consists of several steps: adsorption of enzyme on the membrane surface, diffusion of enzyme molecules through the lipid layer and enzyme desorption into the surrounding solution. The results obtained suggest that the diffusion of the enzyme molecules through the lipid layer is the limiting step of the penetration process.

Changes in enzymes and metabolites of the carbohydrate metabolism in skeletal muscles were studied in mice after intracerebral inoculation of dengue type 2 virus. It was noted that lactic dehydrogenase,
aldolase
, phosphoglucoisomerase, phosphoglucomutase, GO-T and GP-T activity were enhanced initially by two- to three-fold, reaching a peak on day 5. As the illness appeared in mice, all the enzyme activities were lowered and were about three times less in the paralytic stage on the 8th day as compared to controls. Fructose-1,6-diphosphatase activity was increased on the 4th and 5th days but decreased later. Acid phosphatase increased abruptly from the 6th day while
alkaline phosphatase
activity was irregular. Creatine increased on the 4th and 5th days but diminished later. Glycogen decreased from the beginning and was lowest on the 5th day, but the levels increased later and were maximum in paralysed muscles. On the other hand, lactic acid began accumulating in the muscles and was maximum on the 5th day, then declined. Dengue virus was detected in the muscles from the 2nd day but higher titres were seen from the 6th day. Changes similar to the preparalytic stage of mice may occur in human beings, causing myalgia.

The activities of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), fructose-1.6-diphosphate
aldolase
(
ALD
), aspartate aminotransferase (AspAT),
alkaline phosphatase
(AP), and N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase (NAG) were determined on the basis of 75 synovia samples taken from the tarsal joints (Art. talocruralis) of 41 cattle for slaughter of different sexes and aged between one and 13 years as well as on the basis of 56 synovia samples taken from the knee joints (Art. femoropatellaris), tarsal joints (Art. talocruralis), and carpal joints (Art. intercarpicus) of 20 fattening pigs. Both the general condition and cell content of synovial fluid in clinically intact joints are described. The activities of
ALD
and AspAT (less than 15 IU/l), LDH (less than 200 IU/l), and NAG (less than 6,000 IU/l) in synovial fluid of cattle were much lower than those in blood serum of the same species. They were normally distributed. AP activity (less than 150 IU/l) in synovial fluid, however, was higher by several factors as compared to activity in blblished. In swine synovial AspAT and AP activities were just as high as in blood serum, while LDH activities were higher by 1.5 times. Major NAG activity was observed, as well. All enzyme activities were characterised by normal distribution. All five LDH isoenzymes but only one AP isoenzyme were established. The above data were compared with findings reported by other authors, and the comparison showed these results as being characteristic of synovial enzyme activities in clinically intact joints of the two species under review.
