The antivibrionic activity of crystalline preparations of five enzymes of the glycolytic cycle of animals cells was investigated. Phosphorylase "a" (0.5 mg/ml),

(Ald) has been genetically mapped to 3-91.5 and cytogenetically localized to 97A-B. Tpi, the structural gene for triosephosphate isomerase, has been genetically mapped to 3-101.3 and cytogenetically localized to 99B-E. Utilizing closer-flanking markers than the previous mapping, Pgk, the structural gene for 3-phosphoglycerate kinase, has been mapped to 2-5.9; cytogenetically it was found to lie in the interval between 22D and 23E3. Aspergillus nidulans was completely devoid of fruit bodies when grown on manganese deficient cultures. This result was shown earlier to be due to a lack of alpha-1,3 glucan in the cell wall. Several enzymes of carbon and nitrogen metabolism were investigated in an attempt to explain the absence of this reserve material. Synthesis of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucoisomerase and
aldolase
, were not strongly affected by manganese deficiency. However,
phosphoglucomutase
showed only 60% of the activity of the control cultures and it was argued that this was connected with the low amounts of alpha-1,3 glucan synthesized. Malate dehydrogenase was the enzyme the least affected by manganese deficiency and the two to threefold higher activity measured after glucose depletion might indicate the induction of the glyoxylate cycle. An impaired glutamine synthetase could explain the increase in activity observed for NAD-glutamine dehydrogenase.

The activity of glycolysis and glyconeogenesis enzymes, content of carbohydrate and nitrogen compounds were studied in muscles of 15-month cattle of different sex of the black-piebald breed and its crosses with bulls of two meat breeds Hereford and Limousine. In the muscles of bulls the activity of
phosphoglucomutase
, phosphohexoisomerase,
aldolase
and fructose-1,6-diphosphatase is considerably higher (except of the activity of
phosphoglucomutase
and phosphohexoisomerase in the muscles of pure-bred black-piebald animals for which difference is not statistically reliable) and the content of glycogen, glucose, fructose, lactic acid, free and phosphorylated pentoses of nonadenylic compounds is essentially lower than in the muscle tissue of heifers of analogous breed groups. A higher activity of carbohydrate metabolism enzymes (especially
aldolase
and fructose-1,6-diphosphate) and a higher content of total pentoses, the adenylic system pentoses, ATP phosphorus in the muscles of the cross Limousine and Hereford bulls and Limousine heifers as compared to the pure-bred black-piebald animals of the corresponding sex coincide with a greater increase in the muscular tissue and more intensive synthesis of proteins in it. A considerably lower level of glycogen, glucose, fructose and a relatively high activity of carbohydrate metabolism enzymes in the muscles of cross young cattle show that disintegration of these carbohydrates is in excess of their synthesis, that is due to an increase in the energy demand connected with a more intensive synthesis of proteins in the muscular tissue. Therefore, in the authors opinion the performed kill of the cross Limousine and Hereford bulls as well as Limousine heifers, is somewhat untimely and unreasonable. At the same time the activity of all the studied enzymes in the muscles of the cross Hereford heifers, vice versa, is considerably lower as compared to the black-piebald heifers and coincides with a low gain in live weight and muscular tissue, a more rapid accumulation of glycogen and lipids and a more delayed--of proteins in the muscular tissue, that evidences for their early maturity. Therefore the further raising of the cross Hereford heifers in the farm for obtaining meat is economically less profitable. The data obtained give grounds to recommend determination of the activity of carbohydrate metabolism enzymes, especially of
aldolase
and fructose-1,6-diphosphate, as a test for checking the muscular tissue growth and for prognosing the meat productivity in the growing pure-bred and cross young cattle of different sex.

In 28 dogs the distal articular cartilage of the femur was removed and the regenerating articular surface on the 70th postoperative day was studied histochemically for hexokinase, glucose-6-phosphatase, phosphohexose-isomerase, fructose-1, 6-diphosphatase,
aldolase
, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase isoenzymes,
phosphoglucomutase
, phosphorylase, glycogen synthetase, UDP--glucose dehydrogenase, and UDP-glucuronic acid-4-epimerase. The articular surface consisted of fibrous tissue and of cartilage islets. The latter contained cells differentiating into cartilage and young chondrocytes. The glycolytic enzymes reacted positively in the regenerative articular surface. Enzyme activities were higher in the cells (particularly the chondroblasts and young chondrocytes) of the cartilage islets than in the connective tissue. In the cells differentiations into cartilage, beside the LDH isoenzymes characteristic of glycolysis, a significant LDH1 and LDH2 activity was observed. At the same site the presence of fructose-1, 6-diphosphatase-activity could be assumed, but there was no glucose-6-phosphatase activity. Glycogen synthesis proceeded in the cells of the cartilage islets and UDP-glucuronic acid-4-epimerase activity was observed in the differentiated cells. UDP-glucose dehydrogenase activity was positive in every section of the articular surface.

Activity of glycolysis enzymes such as: phosphofructokinase,
aldolase
,
phosphoglucomutase
, was determined in the regenerate of a bone, bone fragments, native bone and, for the sake of comparison, in the animal muscles after the radius resection and feeding of carbostimulin and its mixture with vitamin D3 for 10 days. On the 12th day after the radius resection the phosphofructokinase activity in rabbits increases in the native and operated bones as compared to that in bones of nonoperative animals. In the group of rabbits which were fed on the mixture of carbostimulin and vitamin D3 the phosphofructokinase activity is 7-2 times as high. In the regenerate of these animals the activity becomes 12 times as high as that in the regenerate of the control rabbits. An analogous increase in the
aldolase
and
phosphoglucomutase
reaction rate is observed in the bones of the animals which received carbostimulin and vitamin D3 (4.5 and 7.5 times, respectively). The same tendency to the increase in the activity of these enzymes is observed in the regenerate tissue. In the muscular tissue at this stage of regeneration the activity of the studied enzymes which is usually high in norm decreases.

Changes in enzymes and metabolites of the carbohydrate metabolism in skeletal muscles were studied in mice after intracerebral inoculation of dengue type 2 virus. It was noted that lactic dehydrogenase,
aldolase
, phosphoglucoisomerase,
phosphoglucomutase
, GO-T and GP-T activity were enhanced initially by two- to three-fold, reaching a peak on day 5. As the illness appeared in mice, all the enzyme activities were lowered and were about three times less in the paralytic stage on the 8th day as compared to controls. Fructose-1,6-diphosphatase activity was increased on the 4th and 5th days but decreased later. Acid phosphatase increased abruptly from the 6th day while alkaline phosphatase activity was irregular. Creatine increased on the 4th and 5th days but diminished later. Glycogen decreased from the beginning and was lowest on the 5th day, but the levels increased later and were maximum in paralysed muscles. On the other hand, lactic acid began accumulating in the muscles and was maximum on the 5th day, then declined. Dengue virus was detected in the muscles from the 2nd day but higher titres were seen from the 6th day. Changes similar to the preparalytic stage of mice may occur in human beings, causing myalgia.

and phosphogexoisomerase is considerably higher in the heifer liver and the content of pentoses of adenylic system and the activity of
aldolase
is essentially lower than in the liver of bulls of the same breed. In the liver of growing hybrid young cattle (except of the Hereford heifers) as compared to the purebred ones the value of the total pentoses: glycogen and pentoses of adenylic system: glycogen ratios are significantly higher. These values in the bull liver of all the breed groups are essentially higher than in the heifer liver. The data obtained evidence for possibility of applying the values of ratio of total pentoses and especially of pentoses of adenylic system to glycogen as well as the activity of

in the liver tissue as biochemical test for estimating the high rate of growth and prognosing the meat productivity of young cattle of different sex.

Fifteen red cell enzyme activities of growth-retarded patients with and without growth hormone (GH) deficiency were investigated before and after GH administration. The 15 enzymes were Hexokinase,

, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphae dehydrogenase, triosephosphate isomerase, 2,3-diphosphoglycerate mutase, 3-phosphoglycerate kinase, 3-phosphoglycerate mutase, enolase, pyruvate kinase, glycose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, 6-phosphogluconic dehydrogenase, glutathione reducase. Sixty-six subjects were studied: 30 normal control subjects (group N) and 36 patients (aged 5-23 years) with short stature. Complete endocrine evaluation showed 21 (group I) to have GH deficiency (10 patients with isolated GH deficiency) and 15 (group II) to have normal hypothalamic and pituitary function except for two patients with a moderate hypothyroidism. Both had been receiving thyroid hormone treatment for a long time before our studies. All 36 patients were treated with 2 mg human growth hormone intramuscularly for 7 days. Before GH treatment no significant difference was observed between hematologic data in group I (GH deficiency) and group II (no GH deficiency). After GH therapy there was a significant increase in reticulocyte count in both groups of patients with short stature. The mean pretreatment value in group I was 1.294% +/- 0.084 (SEM); the mean post-treatment value was 2.081% +/- 0.287 (SEM)< P less than 0.005. The mean pretreatment value in group II was 1.0% 0.184 (SEM); the mean post-treatment value was 1.407% +/- 0.193 (SEM), P less than 0.01. In group II (no GH deficiency) mean pretreatment erythrocyte enzyme activities were not significantly different from those activities observed in normal control subjects (group N). However, in patients who lacked GH, the pretreatment activities of five red cell enzymes (glucose phosphate isomerase, triosephosphate isomerase, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, 2,3-diphosphoglycerate mutase, 3-phosphoglycerate kinase) were significantly decreased before GH administration compared with the values in normal control subjects...
