Cell differentiation during spermatogenesis in the rat has been analyzed in terms of the formation of specific "marker" enzymes. Hyaluronidase and other acrosomal enzymes are formed in spermatids according to a highly predictable time schedule which may be termed a "molecular biological clock". exist as isoenzyme forms distinct from enzymes with similar substrate specificities in the lysosomes of precursor cells. Differentiation of spermatids thus involves the loss of gene expression for lysosomal enzymes and the activation of genes for acrosomal isoenzymes. Spermatogenesis is characterized by the sequential loss of expression of many genes, as evidenced by the loss of beta-glucuronidase in the differentiation of spermatogonia to spermatocytes, and the loss of uridine diphosphatase activity in the differentiation of spermatocytes to spermatids. ornithine decarboxylase
activity from spermatids suggests a dependence of these cells upon Sertoli cells for the provision of putrescine and/or spermidine. Such biochemical cooperativity among germinal cells may be necessary as the genes of spermatids are repressed and late spermatids become metabolically inactive. Spermatogenesis is also characterized by changes in the cellular content and rates of synthesis and phosphorylation of specific acidic chromatin proteins. It is hypothesized that these proteins may participate in the activation or repression of genes during spermatogenesis.

Renal toxicity was assessed in 19 patients receiving methyl acetylenic putrescine (MAP), an irreversible inhibitor of
ornithine decarboxylase
. Patients received 250 mg t.d.s. for up to 13 weeks. This dose effectively inhibited the target enzyme, as shown by elevations in decarboxylated S-adenosyl methionine levels. No significant nephrotoxicity was observed in these patients as determined by plasma urea, creatinine and creatinine clearance measurements, although minor elevations of the urinary enzymes lactate dehydrogenase,
N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase
, alkaline phosphatase and alanine aminopeptidase were observed. As this could represent sub-clinical renal damage, caution should be exercised when using MAP in combination with other cytotoxic drugs.

Two luminous marine bacterial strains, LC2-005(T) and LC2-102, were isolated from seawater at Kuroshio Region and Sagami Bay in Japan, respectively. These bacteria were Gram-negative, oxidase-positive, catalase-positive, motile and rod-shaped. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strains LC2-005(T) and LC2-102 formed a cluster within the Vibrio harveyi species group. However, multilocus sequence analysis using five loci (pyrH, ftsZ, mreB, gyrB and gapA) and DNA-DNA hybridization experiments indicated that these strains were distinct from the currently known Vibrio species. Additionally, these strains differ from related Vibrio species in utilization of glucose, mannitol, inositol, sorbitol, rhamnose, sucrose, melibiose and arabinose, production of lysine decarboxylase,

The DNA G+C contents of strains LC2-005(T) and LC2-102 were 45.2 and 45.5 mol%, respectively. On the basis of the polyphasic taxonomic evidence presented in this study, it can be concluded that strains LC2-005(T) and LC2-102 belong to the same genospecies and represent a novel species of the genus Vibrio, for which the name Vibrio azureus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is LC2-005(T) (=NBRC 104587(T) =KCTC 22352(T)).
