Vitamin A deficiency
modifies Na and K concentration values in oedematous testes. On one hand there is an increase of Na, on the other hand a decrease of K. Subcellular protein concentrations are impaired. Testicular fluid electrophoresis show it gets from plasma or lymph. No significant influence of
ATPase
(Na,+ K+) was demonstrable. Stimulation of lysosomal beta-glucuronidase can explain this fluid accumulation.

The effect of
vitamin A deficiency
on the intestinal absorption of nutrients and the activities of brush border enzymes were studied in albino rats. Intestinal uptakes of D-glucose, L-methionine, L-tryptophan and L-histidine were significantly greater in vitamin A-deficient animals than in controls. The specific activities of total
adenosine triphosphatase
(
ATPase
), ouabain-sensitive
ATPase
, maltase and sucrase in the intestinal mucosa of vitamin A-deprived rats were 121, 124, 131 and 134 per cent respectively, of the corresponding values in control animals. The DNA content of the small intestine in vitamin A-deficient rats was 36.5 per cent lower than in control rats. The stimulation in digestive and absorptive capacity appears to be an adaptive change in vitamin A-deficiency which decreases the intestinal cell population.

Influence of
vitamin A deficiency
on
ATPase
activity in erythrocytes was studied experimentally. It was shown that activity of Mg2+, Na+, K+-
ATPase
increased, while that of Na+, K+-
ATPase
decreased under such conditions. The assay of K+ and Na+ in erythrocytes and plasma revealed diminished K+ content in erythrocytes and its elevated level in plasma, Na+ concentration in erythrocytes rose. The author considers that disorders of protein biosynthesis (at the level of translation) in hypovitaminosis A are responsible for the results obtained.

In spite of the fact that vitamin A exerts an obvious effect on cell membrane permeability, the specific mechanisms of vitamin A participation in stabilizing the cell membrane remain unclear. Therefore studies on the effect vitamin A produces on the main and reserve pathways of the synthesis of adenylnucleotides are of great importance. The experiments on Wistar rats showed that under
vitamin A deficiency
the content of ATP and ADP in red cells dramatically changed as compared to that in control animals. The ADP content rose by 28% while ATP content dropped down by 33%. Following 14C-adenine administration to the test animals, the label incorporation rate into ADP increased and that into ATP declined. Investigations of the variations produced led to revealing an increase in the activity of phosphatases: Mg2+, Na+, K+-
ATPase
, K+, Na+-
ATPase
, Mg2-
ATPase
