About 280 unrelated individuals living in the province of Bologna (Northern Italy) have been studied for the following red cell enzymatic markers: phosphoglucomutase (PGM), adenylate kinase (AK),
adenosine deaminase
(
ADA
) and
phosphohexose isomerase
(
PHI
). 116 subjects from the same sample have also been analysed for red cell acid phosphatase (ACP). The observed gene frequencies are PGM21 = 0.280; AK2 = 0.030; ADA2 = 0.091; ACPa = 0.297; ACPb = 0.647; ACPc = 0.056. In the
PHI
system two individuals with the variant
PHI
3-1 phenotype have been found.

Results are presented on 147 individuals from northern Nigeria who were tested for the red cell antigens A, A1, B, H, M, N, S, s, He, P1, C, D, Du, E, c, e, Ce, v, Lua, Jka (some for Jkb), Lua, K, Jsa (some for Jsb), Kpa, Rd, Fya and Fyb, and for variants of the serum proteins haptoglobin and transferrin and of the red cell enzymes acid phosphatase, phosphoglucomutase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, adenylate kinase,
adenosine deaminase
,
phosphohexose isomerase
and lactate dehydrogenase. The results found are of interest as they are among the very few published for this area of Nigeria, but they show little that is unexpected for people living in this region.

Blood and serum from 17 Macaca mulatta were analysed for haptoglobins, transferrins, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, adenylate kinase,
adenosine deaminase
, phosphoglucomutase, acid phosphatase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and
phosphohexose isomerase
. Compared to the human pattern, the AcPh and the ADA components of macaques are fast moving; AK, PGM, 6-PGD and G-6-PG have almost uniform and similar electrophoretic mobilities; and the Hp, Tf and PHI show differential mobilities. All these macaques possess similar karyotypes.

The phenotypic distribution and gene frequencies of haptoglobin (Hp), transferrin (Tf), group specific component (Gc), cholinesterase (Cho E2), and alpha1-antitrypsin (Pi) in plasma proteins, and phosphoglucomutase (PGM), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase ((6-PGD), esterase D (Es D),
phosphohexose isomerase
(
PHI
),
adenosine deaminase
(
ADA
) and acid phosphatase (AcP) in red cells were studied in 127 atopic, asthmatic patients. The gene frequencies were compared with normal groups. The phenotypic distribution of the Pi system in atopic patients was somewhat different from the normal. No significant differences were found between the two groups in protein systems or in enzyme systems, except Pi systems. In conclusion, except for the Pi system, no definite association between polymorphic traits and atopic asthma was found in this study.

The erythrocytes of 350 pigtailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) were examined for electrophoretic variation of hemoglobin and 26 enzymes. Seven enzymes showed variation in more than 1% of individuals:
phosphoglucose isomerase
, phosphoglucomutase-1, soluble NADP-dependent isocitric dehydrogenase, peptidase A, peptidase C, 2,3-diphosphoglycerate mutase, and acid phosphatase. Variation with lesser frequency was found in soluble glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase, phosphoglycerate kinase, lactic dehydrogenase, and hemoglobin. Only eight samples were tested for esterase D, and one of these had a variant phenotype. Enzymes with no clear variation were adenylate kinase,
adenosine deaminase
, phosphofructokinase, hexokinase, pyruvate kinase, glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase, aldolase, phosphoglycerate mutase, phosphopyruvate hydratase (enolase), phosphoglucomutase-3, and superoxide dismutase. There was father-to-son transmission of PGI, PGM-1, peptidase C, 6PGD, 2,3-DPGAM, NADP-ICD, and acid phosphatase variants, suggesting that these loci are autosomal as in man.

The authors describe simple and rapid separation technics by electrophoresis on cellulose acetate of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase isoenzymes, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucomutase,
adenosine deaminase
, adenylate kinase,
phosphohexose isomerase
, lactate dehydrogenase iosenzymes in the red cells. These technics are derived from those of Rattazi et al. for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and Sonneborn for 6-phosphogluconate dehycrogenase, phosphoglucomutase,
adenosine deaminase
, adenylate kinase and acid phosphatase.

Ten red cell enzyme polymorphisms, malic dehydrogenase (MDH1), adenylate kinase (AK),
phosphohexose isomerase
(
PHI
),
adenosine deaminase
(
ADA
), esterase D (ESD), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), acid phosphatase (ACP1), phosphoglucomutase 1 and 2 (PGM1, PGM2), phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (PGD) were investigated in the Baruya tribe and several Anga tribes living high in the Wonenara and Marawaka valleys in Papua New Guinea Eastern Highlands (6.5S, 145.5E). Also a non-Anga tribe, the Aziana or Kenaze, was sampled. Variants were observed in
ADA
, PGM1 and PGM2. AK and
PHI
were monomorphic, all subjects being AK 1 and
PHI
1; MDH1 was also monomorphic in Anga while variants were observed in Aziana. This latter tribe differed markedly in each system from the Anga peoples.

Five-year multidisciplinary study of longevity in the Georgian SSR made it possible to select two populations (Abkhazian and Imeretian), in which indices of longevity were much higher, than the average level for the rural population of the whole region. The distribution of polymorphic systems of red cell enzymes (adenilate kinase, esterase D, phosphoglucomutase I, acid phosphatase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, glyoxalase I, lactate dehydrogenase,
adenosine deaminase
, glutamate pyruvate transaminase, phosphoglycolate phosphatase,
phosphohexose isomerase
) and serum proteins (haptoglobin, Gc-component and transferrin) was studied for genetic analysis of these populations. The results indicate that for all the studied loci the observed genotypic frequencies in both populations are distributed according to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The genetic comparison of the studied populations with some other neighbouring populations did not reveal any genetic peculiarities and the both populations concord with the scheme of anthropological types of Hither Asia. The study of age-related changes of gene frequencies and heterozygosity showed some age-related fluctuations of genetic indices in all age groups, but the heterogeneous nature of these deviations indicate that they may be the result of random genetic processes.

In this study, the phenotype and allele frequencies of five enzyme systems were determined in a total of 611 unrelated Turkish individuals and analyzed by using the exact and the chi 2 test. The following five red cell enzymes were identified by cellulose acetate electrophoresis: phosphoglucomutase (PGM),
adenosine deaminase
(
ADA
),
phosphoglucose isomerase
(
PGI
), adenylate kinase (AK), and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6-PGD). The
ADA
, PGM and AK enzymes were found to be polymorphic in the Turkish population. The results of the statistical analysis showed, that the phenotype frequencies of the five enzyme under study are in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Statistical analysis was performed in order to examine whether there are significant differences in the phenotype frequencies between the Turkish population and four American population groups. This analysis showed, that there are some statistically significant differences between the Turkish and the other groups. Moreover, the observed phenotype and allele frequencies were compared with those obtained in other population groups of Turkey.
