The effect of adenosine was tested on the energetic metabolism of fed rat liver cells after isolation. The cells were incubated in a buffered saline medium with glucose (5 mM) and adenosine (1 mM) for 30 minutes at 37 degrees C. This increased the concentration of the adenylic nucleotides ATP (+57 per cent, ADP (+39 per cent). Cyclic AMP was increased (+50 per cent) and the intracellular inorganic phosphate decreased (-22 per cent). These changes were accompaned by a decrease of glycogenolysis, glucose consumption and lactate production. Measurement of glycolytic intermediates showed decreased concentrations of fructose 1,6-bis-phosphate and 3-phosphoglycerate proportional to the increase in ATP concentration. glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase
-phosphoglycerate kinase system was not modified by adenosine. The decrease of the NAD+/NADH ratio along with the increase of the ATP/ADP X PO4 ratio explains the decrease of 3-phosphoglycerate. The decrease in glucose consumption can be explained by the cross over at the phosphofructokinase stage with the decrease of fructose 1,6-bisphosphate. The major part of adenosine was deaminated as indicated by an increase in the production of ammonia and urea. The effects of inosine, or adenosine along with an inhibitor of
adenosine deaminase
(pentostatin) suggest that adenosine acts on the glucose consumption through adenylic nucleotides. However the increase of the adenylic nucleotide level cannot totally explain the other metabolic changes: decrease of the NAD+/NADH cytoplasmic ratio, constancy of this ratio in mitochondria, decrease of gluconeogenesis from lactate. A direct action of adenosine can therefore be expected.

Phenotypes of eight red cell enzymes at nine genetic loci were determined in the semi-free-ranging population of rhesus macaques; Macaca mulatta, that inhabit Cayo Santiago. The following enzymes were examined electrophoretically:

, indophenol oxidase, lactate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucomutase-1, phosphoglumutase-2, and purine nucleoside phosphorylase. Hemolysates from at least 372 animals were analyzed, and no variants of the enzymes were observed with the exception of malate dehydrogenase. Three animals displaying a variant form of malate dehydrogenase were found.

Electrophoretic variants at four additional enzyme loci--two esterases (Est-2, Est-3), retinal lactate dehydrogenase (LDH-1) and mannose phosphate isomerase (MPI)--among three species and four subspecies of fish of the genus Xiphophorus were observed. Electrophoretic patterns in F1 hybrid heterozygotes confirmed the monomeric structures of MPI and the esterase and the tetrametric structure of LDH in these fishes. Variant alleles of all four loci displayed normal Mendelian segregation in backcross and F2 hybrids. Recombination data from backcross hybrids mapped with Haldane's mapping function indicate the four loci to be linked as Est-2--0.43--Est3--0.26--LDH-1--0.19--MPI. Significant interference was detected and apparently concentrated in the Est-3 to MPI region. No significant sex-specific differences in recombination were observed. This group (designated linkage group II) was shown to assort independently from the three loci of linkage group I (

), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), and 6-phospho-gluconate dehydrogenase (6PGD) is described in fish of the genus Xiphophorus (Poeciliidae). The alleles at loci in this group were shown to assort independently from the alleles at three other loci--isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 and 2, and
glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase
1. Alleles at the latter three loci also assort independently from each other. Data were obtained by observing the segregation of electrophoretically variant alleles in reciprocal backcross hybrids derived from crosses between either X. helleri guentheri or X. h. strigatus and X. maculatus. The linkage component of chi2 was significant (less than 0.01) in all crosses, indicating that the linkage group is conserved in all populations of both species of Xiphophorus examined. --29%--6PGD (30% when corrected for double crossovers), data from backcrosses involving strigatus, while supporting the same gene order, yielded significantly different recombination frequencies. The likelihood of the difference being due to an inversion could not be separated from the possibility of a sex effect on recombination in the present data. The linkage of 6PGD and G6PDH has been shown to exist in species of at least three classes of vertebrates, indicating the possibility of evolutionary conservation of this linkage.

The erythrocytes of 350 pigtailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) were examined for electrophoretic variation of hemoglobin and 26 enzymes. Seven enzymes showed variation in more than 1% of individuals: phosphoglucose isomerase, phosphoglucomutase-1, soluble NADP-dependent isocitric dehydrogenase, peptidase A, peptidase C, 2,3-diphosphoglycerate mutase, and acid phosphatase. Variation with lesser frequency was found in soluble glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase, phosphoglycerate kinase, lactic dehydrogenase, and hemoglobin.
