In the fall of 1995, 3411 subjects in 13 rural villages in Linqu County, Shandong Province, China, began participating in a blinded, randomized 23 factorial trial to determine whether interventions can reduce the prevalence of dysplasia and other precancerous gastric lesions. One intervention is treatment for infection by Helicobacter pylori with amoxicillin and omeprazole. A second is dietary supplementation with capsules containing vitamin C, vitamin E, and selenium. A third is dietary supplementation with capsules containing steam-distilled garlic oil and Kyolic aged garlic extract. Investigators will evaluate histopathologic endpoints after gastroscopies with biopsies from seven standard sites in 1999. Initial data from pill counts and sampled blood levels of vitamin E, vitamin C, and S-allylcysteine indicate excellent compliance. Subjects have tolerated all interventions well, although 3.1% of those assigned to amoxicillin and omeprazole developed rashes, compared to 0.3% to those in the control group. Preliminary breath tests demonstrate substantial reductions in gastric urease activity, an indication of infection by Helicobacter pylori, among those assigned to amoxicillin and omeprazole.

Based on pot experiment with black soil, the effects of various concentrations and various valence of exogenous selenium on soybean yield and its N and P contents and on soil enzyme activities were studied. The results showed that applying 0.25 microgram.g-1 soil and 0.5 microgram.g-1 soil of both Se4+ and Se6+ could increase soybean yield and its N content and promote soil urease activity, but decrease the P content of soybean and soil phosphatase activity. When the concentration of Se6+ was 0.5 microgram.g-1 soil, there was a significantly parabola relationship between the N content of soybean and soil urease activity; and when the concentration of Se6+ was 0.25 microgram.g-1 soil, there was a significantly parabola relationship between the P content of soybean and soil phosphatase activity. There were no significant relationships between the N and P contents of soybean and the activities of test soil enzymes when Se4+ was applied.

A facile, one-pot synthesis of thio and selenourea derivatives from amines using tetrathiomolybdate 1 and tetraselenotungstate 2 as sulfur and selenium transfer reagents, respectively, is reported. The compounds were tested for their activity as urease inhibitors and some of the compounds showed potent activity in the nanomolar range towards jack bean urease.

This study aims to explore the effects of the distribution, transformation and bioavailability of different fractions of copper (Cu) and selenium (Se) in co-contaminated soils on soil enzymes, providing references for the phytoremediation of contaminated areas and agriculture environmental protection. Pot experiments and laboratory analysis were used to investigate the transformation and bioavailability of additional Cu and Se for pakchoi (Brassica chinensis) in co-contaminated soil. In the uncontaminated soil, Cu mainly existed in residual form, whereas Se was present in residual form and in elemental and organic-sulfide matter-bound form. In the contaminated soil, Cu mainly bound to Fe-Mn oxidates, whereas Se was in exchangeable and carbonates forms. After a month of pakchoi growth, Cu tended to transfer into organic matter-bound fractions, whereas Se tended to bound to Fe-Mn oxidates. The IR (reduced partition index) value of Cu decreased as the concentrations of Cu and Se gradually increased, whereas the IR value of Se decreased as the concentration of Se increased. The IR value before pakchoi planting and after it was harvested was not affected by the concentration of exogenous Cu. Soil urease and nitrate reductase activities were inhibited by Cu and Se pollution either individually or combined in different degrees, following the order nitrate reductase>urease. The significant correlation between the IR value and soil enzyme activities suggests that this value could be used to evaluate the bioavailability of heavy metals in soil. Path analysis showed that the variations in exchangeable Cu and organic-sulfide matter-bound and elemental Se had direct effects on the activities of the two enzymes, suggesting their high bioavailability. Therefore, the IR value and the transformation of metals in soil could be used as indicators in evaluating the bioavailability of heavy metals.
