A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of phosphate-containing (P) amendments on the toxicity and bioavailability of Pb and Zn in a soil contaminated by mining tailings using toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) and water soluble, exchangeable leaching procedures in order to find out the appropriate P application rates to reduce the soil TCLP extractable Pb to below the USA
EPA
's regulatory limit levels. The results showed that TCLP extractable Pb concentrations were significantly decreased by up to 93.3% for
MPP
treatments and up to 68.5% for SSP treatments after P application. The dose required to reduce leachable Pb below the
EPA
's regulatory limit level was found to be around the molar ratio of v(P/Pb) = 0.6 for
MPP
and 1.8 for SSP. It was also found both
MPP
and SSP could reduce the exchangeable Pb and Zn concentrations that all bio-available Zn forms including water soluble, exchangeable, and TCLP extractable forms in soil were significantly and negatively correlated to soil pH values, indicating that the content of Zn in the soil was mostly controlled by soil pH value even after P application. These results suggest that P as

and SSP could successfully decrease the toxicity and bioavailability of Pb and Zn in the contaminated soil.

Evidence suggests a link between Parkinson's disease and the dietary intake of omega (n)-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Presently, we investigated whether an acute dose of parkinsonian neurotoxin 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (
MPP
(+)) affects brain n-3 and n-6 PUFA content and expression of fatty acid metabolic enzymes cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in brain slices from C57Bl/6 mice. Furthermore, we investigated whether feeding a diet of n-3 PUFA ethyl-eicosapentaenoate (E-EPA) to these mice can attenuate the
MPP
(+) induced changes in brain PUFA content and expression of cPLA2 and COX-2, and attenuate
MPP
(+) induced changes in neurotransmitters and metabolites and apoptotic markers, bax, bcl-2 and caspase-3.
MPP
(+) increased brain content of n-6 PUFAs linoleic acid and arachidonic acid, and increased the mRNA expression of cPLA2.
MPP
(+) also depleted striatal dopamine levels and increased dopamine turnover, and depleted noradrenaline levels in the frontal cortex. The neurotoxin induced increases in bax, bcl-2 and caspase-3 mRNA expression that approached significance. E-

by itself increased brain n-3 content, including

and docosapentaenoic acid (C22:5, n-3), and increased cortical dopamine. More importantly, E-

attenuated the

(+) induced increase in n-6 fatty acids content, partially attenuated the striatal dopaminergic turnover, and prevented the increases of pro-apoptotic bax and caspase-3 mRNAs. In conclusion, increases in n-6 PUFAs in the acute stage of exposure to parkinsonian neurotoxins may promote pro-inflammatory conditions.
EPA
may provide modest beneficial effects in Parkinson's disease, but further investigation is warranted.

The regiospecific distribution of fatty acids (FAs) and composition of triglyceride (TAG) molecular species of fishes were analyzed and calculated by pancreatic lipase (PL) hydrolysis and Visual Basic (VB) program. DHA was preferentially located at sn-2 position in TAG molecule, whereas
EPA
was almost equally distributed in each position of glycerol backbone. DOP, DPP, EPP, PoPP, PPO, and PPP were the predominant TAG species.
MPP
in anchovy, DDP, DOP, DPP in tuna, and EOO and OOO in salmon were the characteristic TAG molecules, which were meaningful to differentiate marine fish oils. Furthermore, the data management, according to TCN and ECN, was firstly applied to classify the TAG molecular species. The ECN42, ECN46, and ECN48 groups were rich in TAGs. The lower ECN values, compared to the higher TCN values, indicated that the most abundant TAGs exhibited a higher unsaturated degree. Therefore, our study not only offered a simple and feasible approach for the analysis of TAG composition but also firstly summarized the information by data management within ECN and TCN.
