spp. infection can change the levels of

and TIMP in the CNS and may be amenable targets for limiting amoebic encephalitis. The increase in the activity of matrix metalloproteinases during acanthamoebiasis may be primarily the result of inflammation process, probably an increased activity of proteolytic processes, but also (to a lesser extent) a defense mechanism preventing the processes of neurodegeneration.

Breast cancer (BC) is the most common tumour in women and one of the most important causes of cancer death worldwide. Radiation therapy (RT) is widely used for BC treatment. Some proteins have been identified as prognostic factors for BC (Ki67, p53, E-cadherin, HER2). In the last years, it has been shown that variations in the expression of MMPs and TIMPs may contribute to the development of BC. The aim of this pilot work was to study the effects of RT on different MMPs (-1, -2, -3, -7, -8, -9, -10, -12 and -13) and TIMPs (-1 to -4), as well as their relationship with other variables related to patient characteristics and tumour biology. A group of 20 BC patients treated with RT were recruited.

and TIMP serum levels were analysed by immunoassay before, during and after RT. Our pilot study showed a slight increase in the levels of most
MMP
and TIMP with RT. However, RT produced a significantly decrease in TIMP-1 and
TIMP-3
levels. Significant correlations were found between MMP-3 and TIMP-4 levels, and some of the variables studied related to patient characteristics and tumour biology. Moreover, MMP-9 and
TIMP-3
levels could be predictive of RT toxicity. For this reason, MMP-3, MMP-9,

and TIMP-4 could be used as potential prognostic and predictive biomarkers for BC patients treated with RT.

Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) leads to loss of vision in patients with Sorsby Fundus Dystrophy (SFD), an inherited, macular degenerative disorder, caused by mutations in the Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinase-3 (TIMP3) gene. SFD closely resembles age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is the leading cause of blindness in the elderly population of the Western hemisphere. Variants in TIMP3 gene have recently been identified in patients with AMD. A majority of patients with AMD also lose vision as a consequence of choroidal neovascularization (CNV). mutations will provide insight into the pathophysiology in SFD and likely the neovascular component of the more commonly seen AMD. S179C mutant-TIMP3 in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells showed increased secretion of bFGF and conditioned medium from these cells induced increased angiogenesis in endothelial cells. These studies suggest that S179C-TIMP3 may promote angiogenesis and CNV via a FGFR-1-dependent pathway by increasing bFGF release and activity.

Several metalloproteinases (MMPs) are present and functional in the chicken ovary and regulate the extracellular matrix (ECM) during follicle development, ovulation, atresia, and regression. The regulation of the abundance of MMPs in avian ovarian follicles, however, is largely unknown. The aim of the present study was to examine effects of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) on abundance of selected MMPs and relevant tissue inhibitors of MMPs (TIMPs) in the hen ovary. The MMP-2 and MMP-9 activity was also determined. Results indicated there were effects of eCG on abundances of MMP-2, MMP-7, MMP-9, MMP-10, MMP-13, TIMP-2, and
TIMP-3
mRNA transcript and/or protein relative abundances in white, yellowish, small yellow, and the largest yellow preovulatory (F3-F1) ovarian follicles. The response to eCG depended on the stage of follicle development, layer of follicular wall, and the type of MMPs or TIMPs affected by eCG. Furthermore, there was a pause in egg laying when eCG was administered and there were morphological changes in the ovary following eCG treatment that were associated with alterations in MMP-2 and MMP-9 activity.
