Follicular fluids from eight patients with one ovary and from ten patients with two ovaries were investigated for bioactive inhibin, total
renin
, oestradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) concentrations. Four follicular fluids were pooled per patient before assessment. All women had been stimulated similarly using a protocol including a GnRH agonist, HMG and
HCG
. Renin levels were significantly lower and P4 significantly higher in pools of follicular fluid from patients with one ovary, whereas inhibin and E2 concentrations were similar in both patient groups. A significant negative correlation was found in the pools of follicular fluid between inhibin and E2 in both groups. These results suggest a role for inhibin and
renin
in the paracrine and autocrine control of stimulated follicular development.

The concentrations of prorenin (PR) and active
renin
(AR) were determined sequentially during ovarian hyperstimulated cycles for in-vitro fertilization-embryo transfer or gamete intra-Fallopian transfer. AR and PR increased during the early luteal phase and PR was highly correlated with the progesterone concentration. In fertile cycles, AR increased more rapidly after
HCG
injection and AR and PR levels were significantly higher during the late luteal phase. These results confirm the role of the
renin
angiotensin system in ovarian physiology.

Human chorio-amnion from term pregnancy was perfused in vitro in a dual perfusion apparatus. Renin released from the fetal membranes was almost entirely in the form of inactive
renin
(IR) (trypsin-activated). IR was released from both the chorion side and the amnion side. IR introduced on the chorion side of the chorio-amnion did not appear on the amnion side. When cells isolated from term amnion and chorion were grown in tissue culture, IR was released continuously from chorionic cells but not from amnionic cells. The release of IR did not parallel the release of LDH from cultured chorion cells. Exposure to low calcium medium (with or without EGTA) decreased IR release while LDH release increased (or remained constant). Exposure to the calcium ionophore (A 23187) resulted in a marked decrease in IR release. The release of IR from chorionic cells shows some similarities to the release of
HCG
from trophoblasts. It is expected that IR release from the chorion will show some similarities to R release from the kidney as well as major differences. The function, regulation, and processing of chorionic IR remain to be elucidated.

The authors, with a wide experience in the radio-isotopic investigation of the urinary system, undertake a general review and describe the principal advantages of the use of radio-isotopes in urology: quantitative study of renal function, dynamic study of renal transit, isotope cystography, gallium scintigraphy, vascular, skeletal, hepatic, cerebral and pulmonary isotope scans. Finally, the authors recall the possible use of radio-immunological measurements for the detection of prostatic acid phosphatase, the measurement of
renin
, angiotensin I and angiotensin II activity on cases of hypertension and finally the measurement of
HCG
and alpha-foeto proteins in patients with carcinoma of the testis.

The ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is the most important iatrogenic complication of ovarian stimulation. Every drug used in the treatment of infertility such as FSH, HMG, CC, GnRHa, can lead to the syndrome. The authors of the article report the incidence of OHSS in their patients treated for an assisted conception program; the role of oestrogens,
HCG
and
renin
-angiotensin system; the classification, the therapy and how to prevent the syndrome.
