The extracellular production of hyaluronidase and chondroitin sulfatase was demonstrated in all of the subspecies of Bacteroides fragilis tested with the exception of B. fragilis subsp. vulgatus. Elastase was found only in one strain of B. coagulans tested. This appears to be the first report of these enzyme activities in this genus. Additional enzymes found to be produced by certain members othis genus were
fibrinolysin
, penicillinase, lysozyme, lecithinase,
deoxyribonuclease
, phosphatase, protease, and lipase.

Peripheral intravenous fluid extravasation is a common occurrence among neonatal intensive care unit patients. Fifteen high-risk neonates, averaging less than 35 weeks' gestation and less than 1,500 g birth weight, with full-thickness extravasation injuries were successfully treated nonoperatively by a topical
fibrinolysin
/
deoxyribonuclease
ointment. All wounds healed without delaying hospital discharge, and no significant scar contractures were observed in patients followed up to 16 months after injury.

Leukocidin from Fusobacterium necrophorum was produced in the diffusate of a dialysis culture. It was free from
deoxyribonuclease
,
fibrinolysin
, gelatinase, haemolysin, lipase, caseinase and endotoxin. The leukocidin had a molecular weight between 10,000 and 5,000 as estimated by membrane partition chromatography. It formed precipitin lines with anti-leukocidin-serum in double immunodiffusion tests. Mouse peritoneal cells were characteristically damaged by the leukocidin, as revealed by scanning electron microscopy. The damaged cells lost microvilli and suffered partial destruction of their cell membranes.

Swine infected experimentally with group E Streptococcus (GES) produced significant antibody titers against streptokinase (streptococcal
fibrinolysin
, SK) and streptodornase (streptococcal
deoxyribonuclease
, SD). The antibodies directed against SK (antistreptokinase, ASK) appeared two to nine weeks postexposure and persisted for the duration of the experiment (nearly six months). The ASK inhibited SK produced by GES antigenic types III, IV, and V, by GES devoid of type specific antigen, and by a group P Streptococcus. Selected strains of GES serotypes I and II and group U Streptococcus did not produce detectable SK. The antibodies directed against SD (antistreptodornase, ASD) appeared two to three weeks postexposure, reached a peak about six weeks postexposure, and persisted at high levels for nearly six months (the duration of the experiment). The ASD inhibited SD produced by all known antigenic types of GES, by GES devoid of type specific antigen, and by strains of groups P and U Streptococcus. The antibodies failed to inhibit SD produced by group C Streptococcus. The potential utilization of ASK and ASD titers as serological means of identifying swine infected with GES (carrier swine) is discussed.

A 56-year-old man was transferred to our department from the department of oral surgery, with a high fever and a cough. He had inhaled a
fibrinolysin
-
deoxyribonuclease
mixture (Elase) to treat inflammation in the oral cavity after resection of an oral tumor. A chest X-ray film showed diffuse patchy shadows in both lung fields. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid had an abnormally high number of lymphocytes and transbronchial lung biopsy revealed interstitial infiltration by lymphocytes and histiocytes, with granulomatous lesions. The patient was treated with steroids, and his clinical condition improved markedly. He accidentally inhaled the drug again, and the coughing and fever began again. The drug lymphocyte stimulation test was positive only for the
fibrinolysin

deoxyribonuclease
mixture. Based on these findings, we diagnosed pneumonitis induced by this
fibrinolysin
-
deoxyribonuclease
mixture. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of pneumonitis caused by this
fibrinolysin
-doxyribonuclease mixture.

Stomatitis caused by a combined chemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and cisplatin (CDDP) is a serious problem in the course of treatment for patients with oral carcinoma. In the present study, we proposed a form of cryotherapy using an ice-bar containing
fibrinolysin
and
deoxyribonuclease
(Elase) to inhibit the stomatitis. The therapeutic effect of the ice-bar cryotherapy was evaluated in 20 patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma who were undergoing 5-FU-CDDP chemotherapy. Nine of the 20 patients were given the ice-bar cryotherapy while the remaining patients were not. As a result, although there was no significant difference between the incidence of stomatitis in the groups with and without the ice-bar cryotherapy, the incidence of severe stomatitis with ulcers and/or eating disturbance in the 11 cases without the ice-bar cryotherapy (90%) was significantly higher than that in the 9 cases with the cryotherapy (44%) (p < 0.05). However, no significant difference in the clinical response rate of the 5-FU-CDDP chemotherapy was observed between the two groups.

The acute pancreatitis is still serious diagnostic and therapeutic problem. In spite of many experiments there are no satisfactory methods of the treatment of this disease. Usually, it is diagnosed clinically by acute abdominal pain and increased pancreatic enzymes in blood and urine. The main disorder of this disease is the necrosis of the pancreatic gland. The aim of our investigations was the evaluation of effect of necrolytic enzymes on the course of acute experimental pancreatitis. Fibrolan was used. Fibrolan (Parke-Davis) is a preparation, which has necrolytic properties. It consists of two bovine enzymes:
fibrinolysin
and
deoxyribonuclease
. The examinations were carried out on 380 Wistar rats. The acute pancreatitis was induced by retrograde injection of 0.1 ml/0.1 kg body weight of 3% sodium taurocholate solution into the pancreatic duct as previously described by other authors. The experimental animals were divided into four groups: K0-control group (healthy animals), KP-animals with acute experimental pancreatitis without medication, S-rats with acute experimental pancreatitis, which were treated with 0.9% NaCl solution, and F-animals with acute experimental pancreatitis treated with Fibrolan. Fibrolan and 0.9% NaCl were injected into the peritoneal cavity three times a day with eight hours intervals from the 24th experimental hour. The serum amylase and lipase activities and the amylase activity in the urine were determined in each animal group in the 24th, 48th, 72nd, 96th, 120th, 144th experimental hour. For histopathological analysis pancreatic tissue samples were taken from the pancreatic gland. The intensification of the histological changes of these tissue samples was judged using a point score as described by Spormann et al. The results were statistically analysed. The animals of the KP group showed significant histological changes of the pancreas during the whole examination time. Point score: 75-100. Microscopically, tissue samples taken from the animals treated with Fibrolan showed less changes from the 72nd examination hour. There were observed regenerative processes and the improvement of the histological state was evident (point score: 0-50). Changes were less in rats treated with 0.9% NaCl solution than in KP group but the regenerative processes were slower than in F group (point score: 50-75). Enzymes levels were significant lower in F group than in others from the 48th experimental hour.
