time. 10 patients with histologically proved hypernephroid kidney cancer (nephrectomy) did not show any hepatic dysfunctions. Concerning the laboratory findings there was no difference between the two groups. In case of hepatic dysfunctions of unknown etiology a liver punction should be carried out for histologically examination. The cause of hepatic dysfunction (Stauffer syndrome) in cases of hypernephroid kidney cancer are discussed.

The results of sending specimens through a computerized pneumatic airtransport system and manually delivering specimens were compared for 15 chemical tests and six hematologic procedures. All specimens were collected from inpatients and outpatients into evacuated glass containers. The specimens traversed a maximum of 829 feet (253 meters) involving 16 bends and eight transfer units at 25 feet/second (7.6 meters/second). Only the activity of lactate dehydrogenase exceeded the precision of the test in pneumatically transported specimens. Ruptured erythrocytes in incompletely filled vacuum tubes were the likely source of the increased lactate dehydrogenase activity. A 52-week oral repeated dose toxicity study of suplatast tosilate (IPD-1151T), a newly developed anti-allergic agent, was carried out in beagles by oral administration of 30, 90, 270 and 810 mg/kg/day for 52 weeks. The recovery study was carried out by the withdrawal for 5 weeks using control and the 810 mg/kg groups. The results are as follows: 1. Observation of general conditions revealed soft feces, mucous feces, and diarrhea in both sexes of the 270 and 810 mg/kg groups during the administration period, and these findings disappeared during the withdrawal period. One female of the 810 mg/kg group exhibited tremors in the legs and neck, staggering, a decrease of spontaneous motor activity, and clonic convulsions in Week 17 of administration and died on Day 118. One male of the same group exhibited whole body tremors and staggering from Week 32 to Week 52. 2. Body weight gain tended to be inhibited in males of the 810 mg/kg group during the administration period. The body weight of the female that died decreased rapidly after the appearance of neurological symptoms. The body weight of the male that exhibited neurological symptoms decreased after their appearance but later increased. 3. There were no abnormal changes in food consumption in all of the sacrificed dogs. The female that died did not eat at all after the appearance of neurological symptoms. The male that exhibited neurological symptoms did not eat at all for 1 week after their appearance, but the food consumption returned to normal thereafter. 4. Prothrombin times were prolonged in males of the 270 and 810 mg/kg groups at Week 26, and activated partial

We investigated the functional and morphological changes of the liver after brain death for long period maintained with the combined administration of arginine vasopressin (ADH) and catecholamine. Twenty five brain-dead patients suffered from severe closed head injury were studied. The average age was 38.2 y.o. Systemic circulation was maintained normal for at least 6 days with ADH and catecholamine. ADH was infused constantly with an average dosage of 0.3 mU/kg/min. Simultaneous infusion of catecholamine was adjusted to maintain the mean arterial pressure above 80 mmHg. The morphological changes were not remarkable in the liver cells throughout the study. Phenylhydrazine (PHZ) is a hemolytic agent which has been used in the treatment of polycythemia vera. Recent studies performed in our laboratory have indicated that the PHZ-induced anemia is immuno-hemolytic in etiology, and a prolonged bleeding time was present in some of the rats chronically treated with PHZ. The nature of this bleeding tendency was explored in the present experiment. PHZ was administered to rats once a week for a six week period. During this time, the animals were monitored for prothrombin time (PT), activated partial

time (APTT), fibrinogen concentration, and individual coagulation factor levels as well as routine plasma chemistries and blood cell counts. In addition, radioimmunoassays (RIA) for prostacyclin, a platelet aggregation inhibitor, and prostaglandin (PG) E2 were performed. PHZ-treated animals displayed a significant elevation in both PT and APTT when compared with saline injected controls, although plasma fibrinogen levels were not appreciably altered.
