The paper describes interactions between primary care physicians (
PCP
's) and mental health clinicians (MHC's) in a "team collaborative model." A study of the interactions showed there were about two consultations a day with
PCP
's for each MHC, that they were largely unscheduled, took place mostly in
PCP
or MHC offices or in corridors, and increased in frequency over a two-year period. Role definition was a continuing process;
PCP
's and MHC's each learned through repeated discussions what to expect from the other in patient care. It is found that a model with close working arrangements between
PCP
's and MHC's is of therapeutic value for that large population of emotionally disturbed patients seen often by
PCP
's much less often by MHC's.

Delinquent males committed to a training school were interviewed to determine the extent and the effects of phencyclidine use. Nine of 109 (8%) drug using subjects knowingly had used phencyclidine in the past. These nine subjects were multiple drug abusers of other substances and had started taking drugs at an average age of 9.38 years which was significantly younger than non
PCP
users. Six of the nine
PCP
users had committed proven offenses against persons and in four cases violent actions were directly attributed to
PCP
use. Suicide attempts were made by five (55%) of the
PCP
users which was significantly more frequent than suicide attempts made by non
PCP
users.

A solution of internal standard in acetonitrile is used to extract samples of wood from lumber which had been commercially treated with chlorinated phenols. The tetrachlorophenol(TCP) and pentachlorophenol(
PCP
) were analytically separated from each other and from the other wood extractive compounds using a high performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC). The ultraviolet (UV) absorptions of the TCP,
PCP
, and internal standard were automatically measured as they eluted. The UV absorption peaks were integrated, and the amounts of TCP and
PCP
present were calculated with a dedicated microcomputer. Compared with the method previously used, this method is faster (up to 144 samples per 48 hours), has the same accuracy and precision, and it is linear over the concentration range used.

The effects of acute IP administration of phencyclidine (
PCP
), d-amphetamine (AMPH) and pentobarbital (PB) were determined in 10 mice trained to lever press on a differential reinforcement of low rate 10 sec schedule of sweetened milk presentation. The effects of
PCP
were highly consistent, with large response rate increases (and a corresponding shift toward shorter interresponse times) at doses of 1 and 3 mg/kg. Higher doses generally decreased response rates and resulted in a bimodal interresponse time distribution. The effects of AMPH were similar to
PCP
but less consistent. Although some of the subjects showed substantial response rate increases at doses between 0.3 and 10 mg/kg, half of the subjects did not show increased response rates at any dose. The effects of AMPH on the interresponse time distribution were similar to
PCP
. The effects of PB were least like those of
PCP
. The effect in most subjects was to produce a dose-related decrease in response rate and a flattening of the interresponse time distribution. Occasional small response rate increases were observed with PB.

The performance of sober (average length of abstinence = 27 months) phencyclidine (
PCP
) abusers on neuropsychological measures of organicity was compared to that of polydrug users who were not experienced with
PCP
, and to controls who were not alcohol or drug abusers. Six of 12
PCP
users, five of 12 polydrug users, and none of the controls showed neuropsychological impairments. The deficits in
PCP
users occurred despite negative medical-neurological history, and even though the
PCP
group abused other drugs previously associated with neuropsychological impairment less than the polydrug group. Deficiencies in abstracting and in perceptual-motor integrative abilities were noted. The results suggest the possibility that PCP abuse might be associated with neuropsychological disturbance which persists for considerable time after
PCP
use ceases.

The abuse of phencyclidine [1(1-phencylohexyl)piperidine,
PCP
], commonly referred to as angel dust or hog, is rapidly reaching epidemic proportions.
PCP
users often appear violent and increases in
PCP
-implicated homicides and suicides have been reported. In animal studies
PCP
has been demonstrated in brain up to 48 h after administration, long after blood levels become undetectable. However, there is little further information on the distribution of
PCP
within the central nervous system with regard to the possible sites of action. Recently, Sokoloff and associates described a new technique which can be used to visualise possible sites of drug action. The technique is based on the premise that neuronal activity is closely related to energy metabolism. Therefore, by directly monitoring 2-deoxy-D-glucose consumption before and after a pharmacological stimulus, we can obtain autoradiographic evidence of changes in neuronal activity in discrete areas brain as a response to that stimulus. Using this procedure, we now report that
PCP
causes dramatic changes in glucose metabolism in very specific regions of the rat brain.

A reactive ATP analog, N6-(6-bromoacetamidohexyl)-AMP.
PCP
, was synthesized in an attempt to covalently label the binding sites for adenine nucleotides, especially ATP, of various enzymes which utilize adenine nucleotides as substrates, cofactors, inhibitors or allosteric effectors. This reagent rapidly inactivated rabbit muscle glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPD), myokinase (MK), and creatine kinase (CK) under very mild conditions. Adenine nucleotide substrates prevented the inactivation. In the case of GPD, complete inactivation was observed when 1 mol of the reagent per mol of enzyme subunit was incorporated into the enzyme. These results indicate that the present ATP analog may be useful as an affinity labeling reagent for various adenine nucleotide-dependent enzymes.

Behavioral rating scales were developed for quantification of phencyclidine (
PCP
)-induced locomotor activity, stereotyped behavior and ataxia in rats. The dose-response relationship for
PCP
-induced locomotor activity was found to be an inverted U-shaped function over the first 25 min after injection while over the last 30 min of the experiment the function was highly linear. A linear dose-response relationship was found for ratings of stereotyped behavior and ataxia throughout the 90 min period of observation. The ratings of these two behaviors were found to be closely parallel. The effects of
PCP
on locomotor activity were found to be greatest during those intervals when stereotyped behavior and ataxia were at moderate levels. Ratings of locomotor activity may be confounded by ataxia when
PCP
is administered alone or in combination with other drugs.

Trained interviewers utilized a structured research instrument to analyze drug use patterns, personal and familial psychiatric problems, and social backgrounds of a consecutive series of 355 adolescent referred by courts to alcohol counselling and education centers in King County. Within this sample, 4% of the subjects used propoxyphene alone, 16% reported use of phencyclidine (
PCP
) alone, and 6% reported abuse of both substances. The data consistently reveals that the use of one of these more unusual substances is likely to occur in people with more antisocial, drug, and alcohol problems. Use of both drugs was associated with the most pervasive antisocial history, with over one-third of these subjects fulfilling strict criteria for the antisocial personality. The treatment and prognostic implications of these findings are discussed.

The nosological independence of psoriatic arthritis is discussed in the light of the literature. The clinical and laboratory pictures of infantile psoriasis and
PCP
are described. Three cases of infantile psoriatic polyarthritis are presented and attention is drawn to the difficulty of diagnosing this condition in children. Longitudinal assessment of the possibility of early onset on the part of forms becoming evident during adulthood is envisaged.
