Delinquent males committed to a training school were interviewed to determine the extent and the effects of phencyclidine use. Nine of 109 (8%) drug using subjects knowingly had used phencyclidine in the past. These nine subjects were multiple drug abusers of other substances and had started taking drugs at an average age of 9.38 years which was significantly younger than non
PCP
users. Six of the nine
PCP
users had committed proven offenses against persons and in four cases violent actions were directly attributed to
PCP
use.
Suicide attempts
were made by five (55%) of the
PCP
users which was significantly more frequent than
suicide attempts
made by non
PCP
users.

Drug abuse patterns are examined for 326,611 males and females who abused drugs and were treated at a hospital emergency room or died. The data reveal a marked percentage difference between male and female mentions of heroin,
PCP
, and diazepam. A significantly larger proportion of females than males indicated their motivation for drug abuse to be a
suicide attempt
or gesture. Diazepam, alcohol-in-combination, and aspirin are the most frequently mentioned drugs by those whose motivation is suicidal. However, the percentage difference between males and females for these three drugs is less than 6%. The data were collected during the years 1976-1979.

This study presents self-report cross-sectional and longitudinal data on associations between drug use, suicide ideation, and attempts in a multiethnic sample of seventh- and eighth-grade male adolescents attending school in the greater Miami, Florida, area. African Americans had the highest prevalence of 6-month ideation (20.5%), and Haitians had the highest attempts (11.4%). For the total sample, tranquilizers had the highest odds ratio for ideation (3.4), and
PCP
for attempts (6.2). Psychoactive drug-use was consistently related to attempts among Hispanics, white non-Hispanics, and African Americans. Acculturation strains interacted with cocaine and crack to predict
suicide attempts
among Hispanic respondents.
