Captopril (10 mg/kg, i.p.) increased the arterial bradykinin (BK) level (
Art
-BK) of non-treated Sprague-Dawley rats (SD), determined by an ELISA, from 10.8 +/- 3.2 pg/ml to 32.9 +/- 5.4 pg/ml significantly (p < 0.05, n = 6). Intravenous infusion of BK (100-3000 ng/kg/min) dose-dependently increased heart rate (HR) and decreased mean blood pressure (MBP), the former at lower doses than the latter, and the hypotensive response became significant at 3000 ng/kg/min.
Art
-BK determined during infusion of the lowest dose of BK (100 ng/kg/min) was 12 times the endogenous
Art
-BK after captopril administration. In spontaneously hypertensive rats, Wistar Kyoto rats, and deoxycorticosterone acetate-salt treated hypertensive rats,
Art
-BK (450-1280 pg/ml) determined during intravenous BK-infusion (1000-3000 ng/kg/min), which induced significant hypotension, was 20 to 100 times the endogenous
Art
-BK (4.5-64 pg/ml) with captopril treatment. These results suggest that the increased
Art
-BK due to inhibition of kinin degradation by captopril could not account for the hypotension due to this
angiotensin converting enzyme
inhibitor in normotensive and hypertensive rats.

We applied two methods of broth microdilution and Etest for measuring minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) of lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria for 15 antimicrobial agents to compare the feasibility, reproducibility, and equivalence of the two methods. Both methods were originally described by the European projects PROSAFE and

ART
. In 84% combinations of strains and antimicrobial agents MIC differences between the two methods were within one Log(2) dilution. In the case of rifampicin the difference between the two methods was more than ten-fold. We further determined MICs of 70 strains (14 strains of Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus, 16 strains of Lactococcus lactis, 30 strains of Streptococcus thermophilus, and 10 strains of Bifidobacterium longum) by the broth microdilution method. In most cases, MIC distributions were uni-modal and within 5 Log(2) dilutions except for the MIC distribution of L. lactis to the aminoglycoside group which was broader. These data are a good basis for improving knowledge of antimicrobial susceptibility of lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria, and can be used to revise tentative epidemiological cut-off values.

Obesity is increasing in Africa, but the underlying genetic background largely remains unknown. We assessed existing evidence on genetic determinants of obesity among populations within Africa. MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched and the bibliographies of retrieved articles were examined. Included studies had to report on the association of a genetic marker with obesity indices and the presence/occurrence of obesity/obesity trait. Data were extracted on study design and characteristics, genetic determinants and effect estimates of associations with obesity indices. According to this data, over 300 polymorphisms in 42 genes have been studied in various population groups within Africa mostly through the candidate gene approach. Polymorphisms in genes such as
ACE
, ADIPOQ, ADRB2,
AGRP
, AR, CAPN10, CD36, C7orf31, DRD4, FTO, MC3R, MC4R, SGIP1 and LEP were found to be associated with various measures of obesity. Of the 36 polymorphisms previously validated by genome-wide association studies (GWAS) elsewhere, only FTO and MC4R polymorphisms showed significant associations with obesity in black South Africans, Nigerians and Ghanaians. However, these data are insufficient to establish the true nature of genetic susceptibility to obesity in populations within Africa. There has been recent progress in describing the genetic architecture of obesity among populations within Africa. This effort needs to be sustained via GWAS studies.

Increasing evidence suggests that non-pharmacological therapies impact on neuropsychiatric symptoms and quality of life in people with Alzheimer's disease. Among these, art-based interventions seem particularly suitable for elders' rehabilitation as they act both on cognitive functions and quality of life. However, their benefits are not yet appropriately explored. The main aim of this quasi-experimental study was to test the feasibility and the likely efficacy of a novel multi-dimensional visual art intervention for people with Alzheimer's disease (PWAD), named
Art
, Colors, and Emotions treatment (ACE-t). A group of PWAD (
N
= 10) was recruited from the Memory Clinic of Don Gnocchi Foundation to take part in the
ACE
-t. A historical control group that followed a usual care program (
N
= 10) was used for comparison. We considered both feasibility output (adherence and acceptability) and efficacy outcome measures (neuropsychological and neurobehavioral scales). We observed a good adherence to and acceptability of the
ACE
-t. The following significant intervention-related changes were also observed in
ACE
-t with respect to usual care: improvement in general cognition, as assessed with the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive, amelioration in language, and in executive functions, and reduction in Neuropsychiatric Inventory Scale score. In conclusion,
ACE
-t could be considered as a suitable intervention for the rehabilitation of PWAD, with positive effects on the cognitive and the behavioral status.
ACE
is a promising new art-based intervention that merits further research, including confirmatory trials of our preliminary results.
