Calcium and hydroxyproline content of intact rabbit tibio-fibular bone was assay chemically 1 day to 36 weeks after compression and neutral plate fixation with a 4-hole stainless steel ASIF/
DCP
plate. During the first three postoperative weeks calcium content of the cortical bone decreased by an almost significant amount (P less than 0.05); thereafter, calcium values remained subnormal but did not differ significantly from initial postoperative values. Hydroxyproline content increased steadily throughout the experiment (P less than 0.001). The changes in chemical composition of the bone were of the same magnitude after compression and neutral plate fixation. The results suggest that the cancellous transformation of cortical bone, known to take place under rigid plates, reflects an active remodelling process of the bone in which the calcium and hydroxyproline content changes only slightly.

Biomechanical properties of intact rabbit tibio-fibulae were investigated with torional loading 1 day to 36 weeks after fixation using 4-hole stainless steel ASIF/
DCP
plates with and without compression. During the first 12 weeks energy absorption and torque moment increased slightly as a result of subperiosteal new bone formation following application of the plates. There was a concomitant increase in the yielding properties of the bone, reflecting progressive porotic transformation. Thereafter, up to 36 weeks postoperatively, the values for energy absorption, torque moment and angular deformation gradually declined in both groups of bones. The differences between normal control bones and plated bones at 36 weeks were 70.1, 53.0 and 26.3 per cent, respectively. The decay of torsional strength was the same whether or not compression was used in the plate fixation. The results suggest that even in normal bone rigid plates induce a considerable loss of strength due to the cancellous transformation they are known to cause in cortical bone.

The effect of chlorophenothane (pp'--DDT) and five structurally related compounds op-DDD (op'-DDD, pp'-DDD, DTE, DCMP and
DCP
see text) on the cerebral hemisphere gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the main inhibitory transmitter in brain contents and possible correlation with central activities was demonstrated in rats. The tested compounds were given in oral doses of 600 mg/kg in peanut oil. Cerebral GABA content was determined 1, 3 and 6 hrs after the ingestion of pp'-DDT and 3 hrs after each of the other drugs. The mean GABA content in each group of rats was compared with control groups, either without any treatment, or receiving the equivalent volume of peanut oil. pp'-DDT produced a significant reduction in brain GABA contents 3 and 6 hrs after its administration. This was accompanied by excitability, tremor and clonic convulsions. Of the congenors, only DTE exerted a similar effect. The present results point to the possibility of partial involvement of GABA in the tremor and convulsions induced by pp'-DDT. They also indicate the importance of the CCl2 grouping in the molecule for the induction of central effects of pp'-DDT.

The stability of internal fixation is enhanced by axial compression on the fracture ends. If internal fixation of the mandible is achieved by a compression plate at the lower border of the mandible (compression side), distraction of the fracture ends on the occlusal side occurs which has to be counteracted without damaging the roots of the teeth on the occlusal side (traction side) or without damaging the inferior alveolar nerve. From experiments on models it was seen that an acceptable solution to this problem is given by the use of the combined compression plate and tension band plate or the "Excentric Dynamic Compression Plate" (EDCP). In this paper 25 clinical cases of internal fixation of the mandible by means of the EDCP are examined and discussed. The following relevant facts were reviewed on all patients: -- kind of trauma -- age -- dentition -- localization of the fracture -- local and general additional injuries -- time of operation -- material used for internal fixation -- type of occlusal immobilisation during operation -- use of antibiotics -- skin closure -- mobilisation -- hospital stay -- duration of work disability -- complications -- scarring -- neurological disablement -- malocclusion In this paper emphasis is layed upon internal fixation by means of the EDCP. The clinical evaluation of the 25 cases clearly demonstrates that the main indication for internal fixation with the EDCP is given in fractures of the horizontal ramus of the mandible, because in this localisation the plate has to be applied beneath the inferior alveolar nerve. A further indication for internal fixation with the EDCP are fractures of the angle of the mandible. In these cases the tension band principle by means of a tension banc archbar or a tension band plate cannot be applied, because of missing teeth on the proximal fragment, or a non erupted wisdom tooth. The nerves of Latarjet and those going directly to the fundus and the body of the stomach were stimulated to determine their effect on gastric electrical control activity (ECA) and contractions. The lower limits of effective stimulation parameters were: pulse frequency 2 pulses per sec, pulse width 2 msec, pulse amplitude 0.3 ma or 5 v. Stimulation at or near the lower limits of stimulation parameters caused contractions with little effect on gastric ECA. At higher pulse repetition rates and amplitudes, vagal stimulation caused premature control potentials (PCP's), delayed control potentials (dcp's), and contractions throughout the electrically active region. The PCP's and
DCP
's in the antrum became phase-unlocked from those in the corpus. After 2 to 5 min of such vagal stimulation, PCP's and
DCP
's disappeared; gastric control waves became phase-locked at normal frequency and aboarad phase lag. Contractions continued to occur. Atropine and hexamethonium blocked all effects of vagal stimulation. After gastric ECA became insensitive to vagal stimulation, PCP's could still be produced by intraarterial acetylcholine or dimethylphenylpiperazinium, or by an electrical stimulus applied to gastric muscle, and physostigmine could temporarily restore ECA sensitivity to vagal stimulation. The ECA-insensitive state to vagal stimulation represents depletion of acetycholine at preganglionic sites.

A consecutive series of 435 fresh fractures of the tibial shaft was internally fixed by the new dynamic compression plate (ASIF-
DCP
). All but 2 cases could be reviewed personally within 1--2 years postoperatively, while 15 patients had died. The functional results and postoperative complications are reported separately for the 334 closed and 101 open fractures. Inspite of a higher rate of complications in the open fractures, their functional results were about as good as in the closed cases. In our experience the new dynamic compression plate proved to be very satisfactory for internal fixation of fractures of the tibia.

Optimum cutoff levels for plasma des-gamma-carboxy (abnormal) prothrombin (

) and serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) were determined by analyzing receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves to discriminate between hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and benign hepatic conditions. Plasma
DCP
levels in 200 patients with HCC and 197 control patients with benign liver diseases were measured by an enzyme immunoassay with anti-
DCP
monoclonal antibodies, while serum AFP levels for both groups were measured by radioimmunoassay. From ROC curves and tangential lines with a slope of 1.0, the cutoff levels of
DCP
and AFP were determined to be 0.11 AU/ml and 150 ng/ml, respectively. Lowered cutoff levels of
DCP
did not improve the sensitivity, in contrast to the increased sensitivity obtained by lowering the specificity of AFP. The sensitivities and specificities determined in this study were close to the currently used values of 0.1 AU/ml for
DCP
and 200 ng/ml for AFP, justifying these cutoff levels for the differentiation of benign and malignant liver diseases.

The effect of menaquinone-4 (MK-4, vitamin K2) was studied on des-gamma-carboxy prothrombin (
DCP
or PIVKA-II) levels in three subjects with vitamin K deficiency and five patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with positive
DCP
. The half-life of
DCP
in HCC patients after intravenous MK-4 administration (50 mg daily for 14 days) was determined to be 60 hours, identical to that found in vitamin K-deficient subjects who received MK-4. When a single dose of MK-4 (10 mg) was given intravenously to three patients with HCC and elevated
DCP
, the levels decreased with a reduction rate identical to that in vitamin K-deficient subjects for the first 1 to 3 days, followed by an increase reaching the previous level in 7 to 10 days. Changes in plasma coagulant activity were compared between subjects with vitamin K deficiency and those with HCC before and after a single dose of MK-4 (10 mg). The activity increased in
DCP
-positive patients with HCC as in vitamin K-deficient subjects who received the same single dose of MK-4. The increase was greater in HCC patients with higher
DCP
levels. These results suggest that the level of plasma
DCP
in patients with HCC responded to vitamin K with the same sensitivity as that in vitamin K-deficient subjects. When patients with HCC underwent effective tumor therapy (resection or arterial embolization), the reduction rate (slope of
DCP
decline) was found to be identical to that in vitamin K-deficient subjects given with MK-4. In patients with less effective therapy, the reduction rate was smaller, or there was an increase in

. These observations strongly suggest that sequential measurements of the
DCP
reduction rate after treatment for HCC are useful for assessing therapeutic effects.

)] was purified from a total cell membrane fraction of rat intestinal mucosa. A 4,500-fold purification was achieved after affinity chromatography with lisinopril-Sepharose and gel filtration. The final preparation was judged to be homogenous by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis with an apparent molecular weight of 160,000. The purified protein is a glycoenzyme containing 12% N-linked carbohydrate. Purified
ACE
had a specific activity of 65 U/mg protein with benzoyl-Gly-His-Leu as substrate. A kinetic analysis showed that the enzyme had the maximal velocity with substrates containing proline at the COOH-terminal end. Inhibitor studies indicated that the enzyme is a metalloprotein.
