The serum concentrations of FSH, LH, prolactin, testosterone, and estradiol and the enzymatic activities of hyaluronidase, glucosidases (alpha-glucosidase, beta-glucosidase, alpha-mannosidase, N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase,
beta-glucuronidase
, and beta-galactosidase), lactate dehydrogenase and its isoenzymes (
LDH1
, LDH2, LDH3, LDH-X, LDH4), and total proteins were measured in the semen of 69 subjects (8 normozoospermic controls, 7 secretory, and 54 excretory azoospermic subjects). FSH levels rose with the deterioration in spermatogenesis and served to differentiate the secretory from the excretory azoospermias. The only source of hyaluronidase and LDH-X in the ejaculate is the spermatozoa. alpha-Glucosidase activity essentially originates in the epididymis. The seminal determination of alpha-glucosidase and, to a lesser extent, alpha-mannosidase and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase helps rapidly, sensitivity, reliably, and noninvasively to differentiate secretory azoospermias (with higher enzymatic activity) from the excretory type (less enzymatic activity) and may be of use in identifying with a certain degree of reliability the site of obstruction in the male genital tract.

None of the hitherto investigated enzymes of the urine can be used as marker for the proof of tumours. Hopeful starts in this respect are to be seen in an increased
beta-glucuronidase
excretion and in a decreased gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase excretion as well as in an increased LDH5/
LDH1
ratio. The lysozyme excretion with the urine gives important references to the differential diagnosis, the assessment of the prognosis and therapy of acute leucoses. An importance obtained enzyme determinations in the urine for the clarification of pathobiochemical processes of the alteration of the kidney by neoplasms, tumour-lysis-syndromes, cytostatics, tumour radiation and operations of tumours. Courses of enzyme excretion during tumour therapy which as a rule show a rhythmic hyperenzymuria allow conclusion to the moment of the flow the catabolic products of the tumour at the kidney and to the different reaction of the tubular epithelium to these substances.

The effect of curcumin on the biochemical changes induced by isoproterenol (ISO) administration in rats was examined. ISO (300 mg Kg-1 administered subcutaneously twice at an interval of 24 h) caused a decrease in body weight and an increase in heart weight, water content as well as in the levels of serum marker enzymes viz creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and
LDH1
isozyme. It also produced electrocardiographic changes such as increased heart rate, reduced R amplitude and ST elevation. Curcumin at a concentration of 200 mg.Kg-1, when administered orally, showed a decrease in serum enzyme levels and the electrocardiographic changes got restored towards normalcy. Myocardial infarction was accompanied by the disintegration of membrane polyunsaturated fatty acids expressed by increase of thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS), a measure of lipid peroxides and by the impairment of natural scavenging, characterized by the decrease in the levels of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, ceruloplasmin, alpha tocopherol, reduced glutathione (GSH) and ascorbic acid. The oral pretreatment with curcumin two days before and during ISO administration decreased the effect of lipid peroxidation. It was shown to have a membrane stabilizing action by inhibiting the release of
beta-glucuronidase
from nuclei, mitochondria, lysosome and microsome. Curcumin pre- and co-treatment decreased the severity of pathological changes and thus, could have a protective effect against the damage caused by myocardial infarction (MI).

The antioxidant activity and the membrane effects of linear furanocoumarin marmesinin isolated from Aegle marmelose was evaluated during experimental myocardial injury. Isoproterenol (150 mg kg(-1) intraperitonially twice at an interval of 24 h) caused increase in the levels of serum marker enzymes via creatinekinase (CK), creatinekinase-MB (CK-MB) isoenzyme, lactatedehydrogenase (LDH) and lactatedehydrogenase isoenzyme (
LDH1
). It also produced electrocardiographic changes such as increased heart rate, reduced R amplitude and ST elevation. Marmesinin at a dose of 200 mg kg(-1), when administered orally, demonstrated a decrease in serum enzyme levels and restored the electrocardiographic changes towards normalcy. Myocardial injury was accompanied by the disintegration of lipidperoxides and the impairment of natural scavengers. Marmesinin oral treatment for 2 days before and during isoproterenol administration decreased the effect of lipidperoxidation. It was also shown to have a membrane stabilizing action by inhibiting the release of
beta-glucuronidase
from the subcellular fractions. Thus, linear furanocoumarin marmesinin could have the protective effect against the damage caused by experimental myocardial injury.

Diets rich in natural antioxidants are associated with reduced risk of heart diseases. This study was aimed to evaluate the preventive role of naringin on cardiac troponin T (cTnT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)-isoenzyme, cardiac marker enzymes, electrocardiographic (ECG)-patterns and lysosomal enzymes in isoproterenol (ISO)-induced myocardial infarction (MI) in male Wistar rats. Rats subcutaneously injected with ISO (85mg/kg) at an interval of 24h for 2 days showed a significant increase in the levels of cTnT, intensity of the bands of LDH-isoenzyme (
LDH1
and LDH2) and the activities of cardiac marker enzymes such as creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB), creatine kinase (CK), LDH, aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) in serum with subsequent decrease in the activities of CK, LDH, AST and ALT in the heart and alterations in ECG-patterns. The activities of lysosomal enzymes (
beta-glucuronidase
, beta-N-acetyl glucosaminidase, beta-galactosidase, cathepsin-B and cathepsin-D) were increased significantly in serum and the heart of ISO-induced rats, but the activities of
beta-glucuronidase
and cathepsin-D were decreased significantly in the lysosomal fraction of the heart. Pretreatment with naringin (10, 20 or 40mg/kg) daily for a period of 56 days positively altered the levels of cTnT, intensity of the bands of the
LDH1
and LDH2-isoenzyme and the activities of cardiac marker enzymes, ECG-patterns and lysosomal hydrolases in ISO-induced rats. Thus, naringin possess cardioprotective effect in ISO-induced MI in rats.
