The histrochemistry of the adrenal glands was studied in four adult male marmosets (two Callithrix jacchus and two Callithrix penicillata). It was impossible to demonstrate any reactivity to UDPG-GT, ADH, alanyl aminopeptidase, leucine aminopeptidase, xilitol (NAD-dependent) dehydrogenase,
beta-glucuronidase
and aryl-sulfatase in these glands. Total phosphorylase was found in scattered cells of the glomerulosa and adjacent outer fasciculata of one C. penicillata. The dehydrogenases (LDH, G-6-
PDH
,6-PGDH, NADPH2-TR,ICDH,SDH,NADH2-TR, alpha-GPDH, beta-OHBDH) as well as the hydrolases (except alkaline phosphatase, ATPase, and acetylcholinesterase) showed a stonger reactivity in the cortical part. Some hydrolases (naphthol acetate esterase, acid phosphatase) and cytochrome oxidase were less reactive in the zona glomerulosa, where the dehydrogenases were more abundant. The outer fasciculata and the reticularis also showed a strong dehydrogenase reactivity.

1. In previous studies a rat inhalation model was developed to investigate the treatment of acute nitrogen dioxide (NO2) intoxication. 2. Biochemical parameters, which may be important for the evaluation of lung injury and repair, were reviewed and compared with the histology. 3. After exposure to high NO2 concentrations (75 ppm, 125 ppm or 175 for 10 min) the lung injury observed by light microscope was most pronounced after 24 h and became worse with increasing concentration. 4. ), and endothelial cells (alkaline phosphatase and plasminogen activator) were measured in caudate nucleus from 10 sudden death controls, eight agonal state controls, and 16 Huntington's disease patients. Glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase was slightly reduced by agonal state. The four enzymes with a neuronal distribution were all correlatively reduced in Huntington's disease caudate nucleus. mean activity increased over twofold in Huntington's disease caudate nucleus, with the two enzyme activities being inversely related. Pyruvate carboxylase was markedly affected by agonal state and was very variable in Huntington's disease caudate nucleus. The two endothelial enzymes were unaltered in Huntington's disease caudate nucleus. The findings are indicative of neuronal loss, an increased proportion of altered glia, and also of maintained vasculature in Huntington's disease caudate nucleus. Measurement of enzyme activities can help to delineate the types of cell altered in Huntington's disease.

The description of our results distinguishes between gland neck, middle, and distal part of the secretory unit, respectively. In general, the enzyme activities are similar within the middle and distal gland segments, but lower in the epithelia of the neck region. The activity of dehydrogenases was medium to intensive within the middle and distal gland segments, but only low to medium within the neck portion. Of the hydrolases, the acid phosphatase, ATPase, leucine aminopeptidase, and beta-galactosidase demonstrated an intensive activity within activity secreting cells. The enzyme activities of the gland epithelia are compared with these of the uterine surface epithelia and the histochemical results are discussed in context with their significance in histiotrophic nutrition.

Within chorionic and uterine epithelia, hydrolases but not dehydrogenases demonstrated a higher activity at the bases of chorionic villi as compared to the apices and flanks of the latter. The action and influence of the demonstrated enzymes on metabolism, energy transfer, secretory, and resorptive activities of chorionic and uterine epithelia are discussed.

, is clinically employed for its antihypertensive activity and drug-dependent granulocytopenia or agranulocytosis have been seldom observed during treatment. In previous unpublished studies an activating effect of the drug on the complement alternate pathway has been demonstrated. In this paper we demonstrate that captopril-treated serum is able to "in vitro" induce granulocyte activation and aggregation. The present investigation evaluated the changes in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) biochemical constituents and indices of bronchoalveolar lavage cell functions to detect early lung injury in rats following intraperitoneal administration of cyclophosphamide (CP). Rats were exposed to a single intraperitoneal injection of CP (200 or 300 mg/kg body weight). Experimental and control rats were sacrificed at various time intervals (2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 21, and 42 days after cessation of exposure), and lung lavage was performed to examine several markers of lung injury. angiotensin converting enzyme
activity, total protein, lactate, lactate dehydrogenase, and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) levels on days 2, 3, 5, 7, and dose-related increases in albumin, alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, and lipid peroxidation on days 2, 3, 5, 7, and 11 after CP treatment. In contrast, reduced levels of ascorbic acid and glutathione (GSH) content were observed in lung lavage fluid. We also examined bronchoalveolar lavage cells for acid hydrolases (acid phosphatase,

, NAG) and GSH content. Activity of acid hydrolases was slightly elevated on day 2 and peaked on days 3, 5, and 7. However, lavage cell GSH content was decreased. Thus, measurements of pulmonary changes by analyzing lavage fluid and lavage cell functions seems to be a useful marker for assessing the early onset and development of CP-induced lung injury.
