In rats with induced syndrome of chronic magnesium deficiency, occurrence of haemolytic anaemia in conjuction with a shortening of the erythrocyte survival time and marked reticulocytosis among other symptoms became noticeable. In the present experiment the authors undertook to study the behaviour of the lysosomal enzymes in the erythrocytes of magnesium-deficient rats. In these animals
anaemia
and reticulocytosis as well as a marked increase in the percentage of the erythrocytes showing positive reactions to the acid phosphatase and
beta-glucuronidase
tests developed. It seems likely that the positive lysosomal reactions were obtained with younger blood cells which did not stain with brilliant cresyl blue but still retained single lysosomes in their cytoplasm. This assumption was confirmed by ultrastructural studies which demonstrated the presence of siderosomes inside both the reticulocytes and the mature erythrocytes. The changes in the percentages of reticulocytes and enzyme-positive erythrocytes were independent of the histological structure of the experimental rat's thymus. In the reticulocytes as well as in the mature erythrocytes, the noteworthy presence of degenerated mitochondria containing electron-dense material seems to be a morphological sign of impairment of the magnesium-deficient rat's erythrocytes.

The peroxidase, alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase,
beta-glucuronidase
and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase activity was assessed using a semiquantitative cytochemical methods in peripheral blood neutrophils from 10 maintenance haemodialysed patients treated with recombinant human erythropoietin (rHu EPO) due to severe
anaemia
. The examination was performed immediately prior to rHu EPO treatment, after 10 weeks and 32 weeks of therapy. A statistically significant increase in the
beta-glucuronidase
and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase activity was observed after 10 weeks, while all the enzymes studied except peroxidase showed a significant elevation of their activity after 32 weeks of the treatment as compared with the values obtained prior to therapy.

Leukemization in baboon B- and T-cell immunoblastomas was investigated. Immunologic identification of tumor was carried out using standard immunological and cytochemical tests, e. g. identification of several types of E-rosette forming lymphocytes, surface and cytoplasmic immunoglobulin-carrying lymphocytes and assay of such acid hydrolases as acid phosphatase, acid alpha-naphthyl acetate esterase and
beta-glucuronidase
in lymphoid cells. Leukemization of immunoblastomas with bone marrow infiltration by tumor immunoblasts and the appearance of the latter in peripheral blood were observed rather frequently--in 7 of 10 cases of B-cell and in all 4 cases of T-cell immunoblastoma. Immunoblastoma progression was accompanied by a rise in lymphoid element level in peripheral blood and a lesser increase in bone marrow. At terminal stage, both patterns of immunoblastoma sometimes involved the development of leukemoid reactions of a myeloid type and disturbances in bone marrow hematopoiesis which manifested themselves by mild
anemia
and a slightly pronounced failure to produce platelets.
