Tannic acid
, a rich of natural and process-derived phenolic compound, has been shown to be an effective antagonist against viruses and bacteria. In this study, we determined the antimicrobial activity and mechanisms of tannic acid against Staphylococcus aureus with emphasis on inhibiting effect on biofilm formation. Based on the results of time-kill assay, binding ability assay,
lysozyme
susceptibility assay and the transmission electron microscope, we tentatively speculated that peptidoglycan might be the target of the process that tannic acid destroy the integrity of cell wall, moreover, tannic acid could reduce the biofilm formation at sub-MIC concentrations. These results manifested that natural product tannic acid could serve as a potentially effective candidate for development of novel strategies to treat methicillin-resistant S. aureus infections.

Amyloid fibrillation by hen egg white

under the influence of tannic acid was investigated by atomic force microscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy.
Tannic acid
was found to be able to induce the formation of amyloid fibrils with an interesting mixed morphology. Such morphology features with the existence of areas of thickening alternating with areas of normal height. This novel modulation effect of tannic acid on amyloid fibrillation was interpreted by the established surface-catalyzed secondary nucleation theory. and tannic acid interact with each other mainly through hydrophobic interactions. We also discussed why hydrogen-bonding interaction is not a dominant factor in the interaction between tannic acid and

though tannic acid contains a significant amount of hydroxyl groups. Our work provides new insight into the effect of tannic acid, a well-known amyloid inhibitor, on amyloid fibrillation.
