One hundred and forty five patients with different forms of dust-induced lung disease and 57 controls having no contacts with industrial aerosols were examined. It was ascertained that clinical and functional evidence cannot predict the course of the disease and the development of infectious complications (silicotuberculosis, mechanic bronchitis). Impaired humoral immunity and nonspecific resistance in dust-induced lung disease depend on the type of disease and predispose to infectious complications. Predisposition to occupational lung diseases (pneumoconioses, mechanical bronchitis) is associated with increases in the concentrations of plasma fibronectin and serum IgA and a decrease in serum mucin antigen levels. In chronic mechanical bronchitis, there were lower activities of lysozyme and complement and elevated serum IgM and IgG concentrations. Fibronectin, total IgE and the inflammatory marker the mucin antigen 3EG5 are involved in immunological inflammation in dust-induced lung disease. It is worth of determining the factors of humoral immunity and nonspecific resistance in workers contacting with high concentrations of industrial aerosols and in patients with dust-induced diseases to make a precise assessment of the time course of changes in a pathological process and to define a risk for infectious complications.

Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) was inoculated intranasally into line C and line 151 chickens, which were resistant and highly susceptible, respectively, to IBV infection, and the resulting respiratory lesions compared. Histologically, damage to the mucociliary system of the respiratory tract in line 151 persisted longer than in line C. Using the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex method, IBV antigens were detected in histological sections of the tracheas of line 151 for a longer time than in line C. Ultrastructural studies confirmed the histological findings. Immuno-globulin G-, IgM- and IgA-containing cells were seen in the lamina propria and between epithelial cells in the trachea of both lines from at least 7 to 12 days after IBV inoculation but in greater numbers in line 151.

The investigators studied the impact of biological air contamination by the dusts resulting from protein feedstuff manufacture and grain on local immunity of the mucosae in children and adults living in the areas that were differently distant from industrial objects, the sources of contamination, as well as in workers of the shops contaminated by dust containing various amounts of protein. The studies showed that the workers of a biochemical plant exhibited a considerable change in the majority of immunological parameters (lysozyme activity, heterophile antibody titers, salivary and skin bactericidity, salivary total and R-protein, and immunoglobulins A, M, G, and E). There was a significant decrease in salivary IgA activity. The immunological parameters of children and adults were further compared with their morbidity as the most important health index. It was found that with the production rates being steadily raised, the average annual morbidity increment was 1.3; children less than 14 years of age in whom the incidence of bronchial asthma and bronchitis with asthmatic components increased 5-fold were most susceptible.
