, with 0.25% timolol eye drops. Rose bengal and fluorescein staining disclosed punctate epithelial defects in 11 eyes after one week. During the following weeks there defects disappeared spontaneously in most eyes. Schirmer tests (I and II), tear
lysozyme
and pre-corneal film break-up time were significantly decreased by the treatment, while tear immunoglobulins were unimpaired. The authors conclude that topical timolol treatment decreases tear production. This effect is quantitatively limited and does not appear dangerous for normal eyes, although it may become so for eyes with an originally low lacrimal secretion.

Eyes with proliferative diseases and intraocular melanomas were found to contain more macrophages in the retina than those with uveitis and

. The epiretinal membranes and subretinal space in eyes of the former group often exhibited additional clustered macrophages and migrated RPE cells. In all specimens studied, RPE cells reacted with antibodies KL-1, CK7, CK18, or CK19 but not with the CD68, Ki-M1P, or

antibodies. Control eyes without any known disease also contained rare macrophages in the retina. A 38-year-old woman was hospitalized in January 1994 with renal dysfunction and hypercalcemia. Before admission, she was diagnosed as having urolithiasis, and had been treated twice with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). Ophthalmologically, she exhibited iritis and secondary

. Hypercalcemia, an extremely low titer of parathyroid hormone (PTH), and elevation of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and
lysozyme
activity were noted. These findings suggested sarcoidosis, although the chest X-ray showed only fibrotic changes. Hypercalcemia was suspected of having been caused secondarily by sarcoidosis. Since her laboratory data also showed renal dysfunction and abnormal urinalysis, a renal biopsy was performed. The histological findings indicated a tubular and interstitial disorder without glomerular abnormality; calcium deposition, which was detected by X-ray energy dispersive analysis, was observed in the tubular cytoplasm. Administration of prednisolone alleviated the renal dysfunction and decreased the elevation of ACE activity and
lysozyme
level of the blood. Sarcoidosis is sometimes associated with hypercalcemia, but rarely with renal dysfunction. These findings suggested that sarcoidosis may be associated with renal dysfunction due to tubular injury caused by calcium deposition in the tubules, and that glucocorticoid therapy was effective for these disorders.

Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) is an age-related condition, which may cause open-angle
glaucoma
and has increasing interest since it seems to affect additional human tissues, i.e., cardiovascular tissue, skin, and still lacks elucidated pathogenesis. Collagen type IX and HNK-1 epitope have been considered characteristic constituents of the aqueous humour of PEX patients, since their amounts were increased in PEX aqueous humour compared to normal eyes. Since it has been proposed that the initial manifestations of PEX syndrome occur in conjunctiva, the present study was undertaken to investigate the presence of the same antigens in tears of PEX patients and their possible use as the biochemical markers for early diagnosis. Tears of PEX patients and healthy individuals were subjected to western blotting analysis for various basement membrane components identified in aqueous humour. It was found that collagen type IX and HNK-1 epitope were present in tears, the amount of the former being increased 2.7 times compared to normal (P<0.05), surprisingly high as compared with total protein or
lysozyme
activity in tears, which were found to be increased in PEX patients about 25% with no statistical differences (P approximately 0.4). The results suggest the possible use of tears' collagen type IX for the diagnosis of PEX syndrome.

Prolonged fasting is thought to be among risk factors for many diseases, e.g., cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and various infectious diseases. It could also play a part in several eye diseases, including dry eye syndrome,
glaucoma
, and cataract. Toxic and oxidative effects due to increased concentrations of some biochemicals as a result of reduction in tear volume thought to play an important role in damaging ocular tissue. Human tear is an important biological fluid similar to blood in many aspects. Tear film is composed of three basic layers i.e. lipid, aqueous and mucin. The tear film covering the ocular surface presents a mechanical and antimicrobial barrier, and endures an optical refractive surface. The aim of this study was to analyze and compare tear protein of volunteers during fasting. Using two reliable analytical methods, i.e. electrophoresis and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), we compared tear protein content of sixty volunteers (35 males and 25 females, 23-27 years old) during fasting in holly month of Ramadan (FAST: n = 62) and one month before Ramadan (CTRL: n = 60). The results showed that some identified tear proteins decreased during fasting. On the other hand, the activity of some enzymes such as
lysozyme
, lactoferrin and alpha amylase also decreased in fasting samples. Electrophoresis results showed that tear protein patterns in FAST (P < 0.05) were different from those of CTRL. There were a few more protein peaks in the FAST group (P < 0.005) than in CTRL.

Additionally, wet transportation and storage of drug-soaked lenses result in drug loss due to elution from the lenses. Here we present a nanodiamond (ND)-embedded contact lens capable of

-triggered release of TM for sustained therapy. We find that ND-embedded lenses composed of enzyme-cleavable polymers allow for controlled and sustained release of TM in the presence of

. Retention of drug activity is verified in primary human trabecular meshwork cells. These results demonstrate the translational potential of an ND-embedded lens capable of drug sequestration and enzyme activation.
