Inflammatory pseudotumour of the lung (I.P.) is a quite rare benign lesion, variously named by different authors. In the present report four new cases of I.P. are presented and immunohistochemically studied with a panel of antibodies. Microscopically, the most prominent histological features were the presence of interlacing bundles of elongated histiocytic-like cells, plasma cell aggregates and lymphoid follicles. Immunohistochemistry showed that plasma cells are polyclonal. The spindle cells were negative for desmin, cytokeratins,
lysozyme
and S-100 and immunoreactive for alpha-1-antichymotrypsin, vimentin and for smooth-muscle
alpha-actin
. Actin and desmin, were clearly evident in the vessels' smooth muscle layers, highlighting the angioinvasive behaviour of the lesions. Our data are in keeping with literature suggesting that I.P. is due to a mixed histiocytic-myofibroblastic-reactive proliferation and support the inflammatory nature of IP.

Thirty-three cases of European Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) were investigated by immunohistochemical methods using a panel of antibodies specific for the markers of the cell types proposed for its histogenesis in the literature: S-100 protein for Schwann cells;
lysozyme
for histiocytes;
alpha-actin
, desmin and vimentin for pericytes and other mesenchyme-derived cells; factor VIIIR:Ag and Ulex europaeus agglutinin-I for endothelial cells. Antifibronectin antibodies were also used in order to investigate some functional activities of the proliferating cells. Immunohistochemical results showed that KS cells were diffusely positive for vimentin and
alpha-actin
and negative for all other cell markers. Furthermore, KS cells were constantly surrounded by fibronectin-positive material. Since the KS cells are diffusely positive for vimentin, they may be considered a monotypic proliferation of mesenchyme-derived cells which lack the markers of full endothelial cell differentiation; however, the occurrence of fibronectin-positive material around them suggests that these cells are actively proliferating endothelial cells and their diffuse positivity for
alpha-actin
suggests a possible differentiation to pericytic cells. In conclusion KS cells may be considered as mesenchymal cells which are at an intermediate stage of maturity or immaturity in vascular differentiation.

The nature of hyaline bodies (HB) in Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) has been investigated by electron microscopy (EM) and immunohistochemical methods. Paraffin sections from 45 cases of KS selected on the basis of their high content of HB were challenged with antisera against factor VIIIR:Ag, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), alpha 1-antitrypsin (A1AT), fibrinogen, hemoglobin,
alpha-actin
and
lysozyme
. HB showed positivity for all the antibodies except for the last two. By EM, HB showed features consistent with red blood cell, fibrin and platelet phagocytosis. Therefore, HB in KS are considered to be the expression of an indiscriminate process of phagocytosis which involves not only erythrocytes and platelets, but also other substances such as fibrinogen, factor VIIIR:Ag, A1AT, CEA and AFP.

We present a case of proliferative fasciitis arising adjacent to an operative scar of the right lower leg of a patient with chronic lymphatic leukemia, diabetes mellitus, and multiple subcutaneous angiolipomas. A 61-year old man had a hard mass in his right lower leg that had rapidly increased in size in the past 10 days. The mass was microscopically composed of a dense proliferation of spindle cells forming interlacing fascicles admixed with an inflammatory infiltrate of lymphocytes and eosionphils, focal hemorrhage, and myxomatous change as typically seen in nodular fasciitis as well as many characteristic ganglion cell-like giant cells. Immunohistochemically, most of the spindle-shaped cells were positive for vimentin and
alpha-actin
, whereas the ganglion cell-like giant cells were positive for vimentin and negative for
alpha-actin
and
lysozyme
. We suggest that the main component cells of proliferative fasciitis are fibroblastic in nature, many of which are myofibroblasts in large part, whereas the ganglion cell-like giant cells are related more closely to fibroblasts rather than histiocytes or pericytes. Additionally, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) stain revealed that many of the fibroblastic cells showed high proliferative activity, especially in the hypercellular areas, although there was no significant difference in PCNA staining between the focus traumatized by the needle biopsy and the nontraumatized areas.

The similarities between the porcine and human cardiovascular systems make the pig a useful animal model for the study of vascular biology. However, a standardized method is needed to describe the normal histological properties of porcine arteries in order to evaluate pathologic lesions in future studies. Descriptive and morphometric analyses were done on 16 porcine femoral arteries. For these purposes, three histological stains (haematoxylin eosin, Masson's trichrome, and orcein), four immunohistochemical methods (using antibodies anti-
alpha-actin
, anti-CD3, anti-L1 and anti-
lysozyme
), and a glycohistochemical method (using Dolichos biflorus lectin) were performed. The porcine femoral arteries evaluated had a mean total area of 6.25 +/- 1.99 mm(2) and a diameter of 2.79 +/- 0.41 mm. The majority of the total area was occupied by the medial layer (42.97 +/- 5.38%) and was mainly constituted by smooth muscle cells (94.58 +/- 2.65%). All the cell markers used reacted with porcine paraffin-embedded tissue. However, the anti-
lysozyme
antibody was excluded from this histological analysis because of cytoplasmatic reactivity in smooth muscle cells. In summary, this study proposes histological methods to describe the normal characteristics of the porcine femoral artery and raises the possibility of applying this methodology in future studies on porcine vascular research.
