DNA restriction endonuclease analysis was carried out on 48 adenovirus isolates from the conjunctival swabs of patients with acute conjunctivitis. Samples were obtained in Sapporo, Japan, and Manila, the Philippines, from October 1983 to October 1984. We identified new genomic variants among the isolates of Ad3 in Sapporo, and Ad4 and Ad11 in Manila, and these were designated as Ad3f, Ad4b, Ad11a and Ad11b, respectively. Ad7 isolates in Manila were identical to Ad7b reported by Wadell et al. In Sapporo, no Ad7 was isolated during the period of this study. One isolate in Sapporo, which was neutralized by both Ad34 and Ad35 antisera, showed identical restriction patterns to Ad35 prototype strain (Holden) with SmaI, BamHI and HpaI. However, with HindIII, the pattern was identical to that of Ad34 prototype strain (Compton). This isolate was tentatively designated as Ad34/35. Ad8 isolates in Sapporo were identical to Ad8B detected there from 1977 to 1981, while Ad8 isolates in Manila were prototype (Trim) strains. In both cities Ad19 isolates were all identical to Ad19a and Ad37 isolates were all prototype (GW). Genomic variants of Ad isolates in both cities are as follows: (Table: see text).

DNA restriction endonuclease cleavage analysis and serum neutralization test were performed in strains of adenovirus types 19 (Ad-19) and 37 (Ad-37) isolated from patients with acute conjunctivitis in Sapporo (Japan), Kaohsiung (Taiwan) and Pusan (South Korea) during the period of 1977 to 1984. Ad-19 and Ad-37 could be roughly differentiated, but a fair degree of cross reactivity was noted by serological test. By DNA restriction endonuclease analysis, Ad-19 isolates, Ad-19 prototype strain and Ad-37 strains were clearly differentiated. It was suggested by DNA cleavage patterns that both Ad-19 and Ad-37 isolates in East Asia are the same as those currently found in Europe and the USA. A new subtype of Ad-37 was found by DNA cleavage analysis among the isolates obtained in Sapporo and Kaohsiung in 1980.

DNA restriction endonuclease analysis for genome typing of adenovirus (Ad) DNA was carried out on a total of 65 Ad isolates including serotypes Ad4, Ad7, Ad8, Ad11, Ad19, and Ad37 from patients with epidemic keratoconjunctivitis and acute conjunctivitis obtained in Japan from 1982 to 1986, Australia from 1973 to 1986, and the Philippines in 1984. All 4 isolates of Ad7 in Australia were Ad7b. Four of 6 Ad11 isolates obtained in Japan were typed as Ad11 prototype (Ad11p), and the remaining were identified to be new genome types, designated tentatively as Ad11c and Ad11d. An isolate of Ad11 obtained in Australia was typed as Ad11c. Nine Ad8 isolates in Australia and in the Philippines were typed as Ad8p, but 11 Ad8 isolates in Japan were Ad8b. Thirteen Ad19 isolates were identified as Ad19a. All 3 isolates of Ad37 in Japan and three isolates in Australia before 1982 were typed as Ad37p, however, 5 isolates in Australia after 1983 were identified as a new genome type, designated as Ad37d. In Japan, 10 isolates of Ad4 were identified as Ad4a.

Neutralization test and DNA restriction endonuclease analysis were performed in strains of adenovirus types 19 (Ad-19) and 37 (Ad-37) isolated from patients with acute conjunctivitis in Sapporo, Kao-Hsiung (Taiwan) and Pusan (Korea) in the period of 1979 and 1984. Although Ad-19 and Ad-37 were differentiated, they were related to each other in neutralization test. There was no difference between prototype strain and isolates in Ad-19 and Ad-37 strains. By DNA restriction endonuclease analysis Ad-19 isolates were clearly distinct from Ad-19 prototype strain (AV-587) and Ad-37 strains. And it was suggested that these Ad-19 isolates from East Asia were as same as isolates from Europe named Ad-19a. Ad-37 isolated strains were as same as Ad-37 prototype strain (GW) by SmaI, SacI, SalI, BamHI, EcoRI, XhoI, HindIII restriction analysis. But some strains were distinct from prototype strain by only HindIII restriction analysis, and they were new subtype of Ad-37 which had never been reported.
