32 endometrial biopsies, 22 of which had used the IUD for 1-20 years or more and 10 cases with normal menstrual cycles used as controls were studied by means of histochemical methods. As compared with controls, the activities of succinic dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, thiamine pyrophosphatase, glucose-6-phosphatase were more or less decreased and the amount of glycogen reduced in most of the endometrial blood vessels in IUD users. However, no significant difference between the activity of acid phosphatase and nonspecific esterases of the IUD users and control groups had been found. Results suggest that the dilatation, defect, and rupture of endometrial microvascularity in IUD-exposed users may be related to the changes of enzymes and glycogen. (author's modified)

In intact microsomes, quercetin 3-O-alpha-(2''-galloyl)rhamnoside (QGR) inhibits glucose-6-phosphatase (G-6-Pase) in a concentration-dependent manner. QGR increased the G-6-Pase K(m) for glucose-6-phosphate without change in the V(max). The flavonol did not change the kinetic parameters of disrupted microsomal G-6-Pase or intact or disrupted microsomal G-6-Pase pyrophosphatase (PPase) activity. This result allowed the conclusion that QGR competitively inhibits the glucose-6-phosphate (G-6-P) transporter (T1) without affecting the catalytic subunit or the phosphate/pyrophosphate transporter (T2) of the G-6-Pase system.QGR strongly inhibits the neoglucogenic capacity of rat liver slices incubated in a Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate buffer, supplemented with lactate and oleate saturated albumin. The QGR G-6-Pase inhibition might explain the decrease in the liver slice neoglucogenic capacity and, in turn, could reduce glucose levels in diabetic patients.

Ultrastructural cytochemical techniques were used for the localization of phosphatases and oxidases in spermatid and spermatozoon of the phytophagous bugs Acrosternum aseadum and Nezara viridula (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). Acid phosphatase was found mainly in the trans most portion of the Golgi complex, and in the acrosome of spermatozoon. Glucose-6-phosphatase was located in the endoplasmic reticulum, trans portion of the Golgi complex and in the acrosome of spermatids. The axoneme showed activity of acid phosphatase, glucose-6-phosphatase and thiamine pyrophosphatase. This observation supports the idea that various phosphates may play some role in spermatid differentiation. Indeed, the presence of cytochrome oxidase activity was only shown in the mitochondrial cristae of early spermatids, suggesting also the participation of this enzyme during spermatid differentiation of this insect.
