A histochemical study has been made of the localization and changes of lipids, carbohydrates, ATPase and
5'-nucleotidase
in fresh and fixed frozen sections of testicular and epididymal components in the normal and alpha-chlorohydrin-treated rats. After treatment with a single low dose of alpha-chlorohydrin, the phospholipids are decreased with corresponding increase in triglycerides in both the testis and epididymis.
Glycogen
, ATPase and
5'-nucleotidase
are also decreased after treatment with alpha-chlorohydrin. The physiological significance of these histochemical changes has been discussed.

Cardiac contractile function is dependent on the integrity and function of the sarcolemmal membrane. Swimming exercise training is known to increase cardiac contractile performance. The purpose of the present study was to examine whether a swimming exercise program would alter sarcolemmal enzyme activity, ion flux, and composition in rat hearts. After approximately 11 wk of exercise training, cardiac myosin and actomyosin Ca2+-adenosinetriphosphatase (ATPase) activity was significantly higher in exercised rat hearts than in sedentary control rat hearts.
Glycogen
content was increased in plantaris and gastrocnemius muscles from exercised animals as was succinic dehydrogenase activity in gastrocnemius muscle of exercised rats in comparison to sedentary rat preparations. Sarcolemmal vesicles were isolated from hearts of exercise-trained and control rats. activity were elevated in the cardiac sarcolemmal vesicles isolated from exercised animals compared with sedentary control rats. Sarcolemmal phospholipid composition was not altered by the exercise training. Our results demonstrate that swimming training in rats does not affect most parameters of cardiac sarcolemmal function or composition. However, the elevated sarcolemmal Ca2+ pump activity in exercised rats may help to reduce intracellular Ca2+ and augment cardiac relaxation rates. The enhanced

activity may stimulate adenosine production, which could affect myocardial blood flow. The present results further our knowledge on the subcellular response of the heart to swimming training in the rat.

The effects of the phenothiazine, Stelazine, on Hymenolepis diminuta were investigated. The cestode was incubated for 10 min at 37 degrees C with 1 mM trifluoperazine, in the presence and absence of Ca2+. Assay of brush border enzymes showed that drug treatment lowered the activities of alkaline phosphatase, Ca2+-ATP'ase,
5'-nucleotidase
and type 1 phosphodiesterase. This occurred in parallel with a significant reduction in tegumental protein. Under these conditions gross changes in ultrastructural appearance and cellular organization were observed. There was a lack of ordered microtriches and the distal cytoplasm was absent.

granules were scattered throughout the cytoplasm within the subtegumental layer. The connective tissue also appeared to be in some disarray. The effects of Stelazine appeared to be dependent on time and were significantly increased when Ca2+ was included in the incubation medium. Incubation with the less hydrophobic phenothiazine trifluoperazine sulphoxide had minimal effect on the integrity of the cestode. The results reported here support the premise that certain phenothiazines may be considered as potential cestocidal agents.
