Thirty five patients with psoriasis (plaque type 26, guttate 3, pustular 4, and erythrodermic 2) were treated with oral mycophenolic acid for a period ranging from 52 to 104 weeks. The average follow-up was 89 weeks, and the dose schedule ranged from 2,400 to 7,200 mg daily. Excellent response was noted in 20 patients, good in 13 patients, and poor in 2. The most common clinical side effects were in the gastrointestinal tract, namely, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramps, and soft stools. A high incidence of herpes simplex, herpes zoster, and a flu-like syndrome was noted. Laboratory abnormalities consisted of mild blood
hemoglobin
reduction, one case of leukopenia (3,9000 WBCs per cubic millimeter), two cases with thrombocytopenia and mild elevation of
alkaline phosphatase
. Mycophenolic acid appears as a promising drug for the treatment of severe psoriasis.

On a random basis, 19 patients with metastatic and recurrent ovarian carcinoma received 100, 200, or 400 mg daily of medroxyprogesterone acetate orally. All patients had previously failed to respond to cytotoxic therapy. None of the 5 patients receiving 100 mg/day had an objective response. 1 of the 9 patients receiving 200 mg/day had an objective response for 4 months and 2 had their disease remain static for 4 and 5 months. None of the 5 patients who received 400 mg/day had an objective response but 1 had her disease remain static for 7 months. All epithelial ovarian cell types were included in the study. During drug therapy no change was found in
hemoglobin
levels, leukocyte counts, platelet counts, serum levels of creatinine, bilirubin,
alkaline phosphatase
, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, fasting blood sugar, or urine. Data from these 19 patients indicate that this drug, as used, had no significant benefit.

Polymorphism for the number of the blood proteins (transferrin,
alkaline phosphatase
, haptoglobin, plasma esterase and erythrocyte esterase) have been exposed by means of starch gel electrophoresis of northern fur seal Callorhinus ursinus from three regions: Pelagic of Commander Islands (n = 164), Rockery of Robben Island (Sakhalin population, n = 308), winter todder region to the east of Honshu Island (n = 110). The reliable differences have been exposed between fur seals of the Commander and Sakhalin populations by the gene frequencies Tf and Es pl. Fur seals from winter todder region turned out to be closer to Commander population, that to the Robben one. However, originality of gene frequencies of locus Ap (
alkaline phosphatase
), revealed from the todder region animals, is difficult to explain by the mixture of the Commander and Robben population only. Perhaps, this originality is caused by the influence of Pribylov population. It is established that
hemoglobin
of northern fur seal consists of two components (Hb I + Hb II). Individual variability of
hemoglobin
results in the variation of the colour intensity of the "slow" component (Hb II).

Thymol blue monophosphate is evaluated as a substrate for use in kinetic bichromatic analysis of serum
alkaline phosphatase
activity. The effect of abnormally high concentrations of
hemoglobin
, bilirubin, or chylomicrons is negligible. The expected range for ambulatory adults established by assaying sera from 206 blood donors, was 12-44 U/lliter at 37 degrees C. Comparison of the method with a commonly used p-nitrophenyl phosphate method yielded a correlation coefficient, r, of 0.9949. Advantages of the method are the reduced cost per test and the exceptionally stable substrate.

Thirteen phosphorus balances were performed in four thalassemic children aged 6 to 10 years. No correlation was found between phosphorus intake and serum level or between phosphorus intake and net absorption. There was a positive correlation among daily phosphorus intake, net absorption, and 24-hour urinary excretion. The 24-hour urinary excretion level was higher than net absorption, indicating that these children have normal phosphorus absorption but abnormally high renal phosphaturia, which leads to a deficiency of phosphorus. A strongly positive correlation was found between values for
hemoglobin
and serum
alkaline phosphatase
. In the thalassemic patients with
hemoglobin
levels larger than or equal to 7.5 gm/100 ml, the serum
alkaline phosphatase
values were larger than or equal to 15 King-Armstrong units, suggesting normal osteoblast function.

In women employed in an industrial plant in direct contact with epoxide resins and their hardeners, the following biochemical parameters were determined in blood: total protein, seromucoid, haptoglobin,
hemoglobin
variants, methemoglobin, alpha1-inhibitor of trypsin, lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate and alanine aminotransferases, alkaline and acid phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, leucylaminopeptidase, and alanine aminopeptidase. Depending on duration of work, Hb A2 fraction and lactate dehydrogenase increased significantly, and aspartate aminotransferase, acid and
alkaline phosphatase
activities decreased. In pregnant women, leucylaminopeptidase activity and isozyme of placental alkaline phosphatase were decreased.

Blood samples from rats, rabbits and beagles were subjected to simultaneous analyses for ten parameters using the RaBA-System and the results were compared with those obtained by the routine manual methods. Although the mean values measured by the two methods differ in several items, a significant correlation between the two methods in the majority of the determinations makes the use of the RaBA-System acceptable. The RaBA-System is thus considered to be applicable to evaluation of
hemoglobin
, total protein, glucose, BUN, total cholesterol, GOT, GPT, and
alkaline phosphatase
in blood samples from rats, rabbits and beagles. Plasma LDH and albumin, however, cannot be determined with accuracy by the system.

In order to establish the normal baseline of blood values in rats using the RaBA-System, the following eight parameters were analyzed in 8-22-week-old Wistar-Imamichi rats of both sexes:
hemoglobin
, total protein, glucose, BUN, total cholesterol, GOT, GPT, and
alkaline phosphatase
. With the exception of glucose, all these parameters were significantly different depending upon ages. Significant sex differences were observed in the values of
hemoglobin
, total cholesterol, GOT, and
alkaline phosphatase
.

The data presented are compiled from two herds of American bison (Bison bison) in Kansas. In this study there were differences in the mean values of white blood cell count, neutrophil percentage, lymphocyte percentage and cholestrol,
alkaline phosphatase
, specific glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase concentrations between the age groups of animals under 2 years of age and bison over 2 year old. Differences in the two age groups paralleled those found in Jersey and Hereford cattle. Packed cell volume and
hemoglobin
concentrations was considerably higher than found in domestic Bovidae. More data is needed from other bison herds in this country to better describe the range of normal variation in individuals, population and age groups of B. bison.

Thirty-two conditioned 15-18 kg dogs underwent laparotomy, heparinization, left lateral hepatic lobe injury and subsequent partial left lateral hepatic lobectomy. The hemostatic capabilities of the surgical scalpel combined with suture ligatures and stay sutures, the Bovie, and the CO2 laser were compared. The CO2 laser proved significantly more effective in achieving hemostasis both in comparison to the Bovine and the surgical scalpel combined with classical methods. The postoperative mortality utilizing the Bovie was 11%, the scalpel 30% and the laser 23%. Two of the three laser deaths were related to a bulky laser delivery system which can be redesigned. Postoperative laboratory evaluation revealed that SGOT, LDH,
alkaline phosphatase
, total protein, albumin and
hemoglobin
levels were altered in the postoperative period but returned to normal levels in uniform fashion in all groups. There was no statistical difference between various surgical modalities with regard to these parameters. The white blood count was significantly lower in laser dogs when compared to the other two groups. Other laboratory parameters were unchanged. Damage to liver tissue may be less extensive when the laser is utilized as opposed to the Bovie or stay suture methods of hemostasis and healing is equally good. The CO-2 laser is considered a valuable ancillary tool in hepatic resection and clinical evaluation is warranted.
