Studied were the changes in the values of some hematologic indices (hemoglobin, erythrocytes, leukocites) as well as the values of some biochemical (total protein and protein fractions, urea, total lipids, bilirubin, inorganic, phosphorus calcium) and enzyme factors (lactatedehydrogenase, alkaline and acid phosphatase, aldolase, amino transferrases, creatinephosphokinase) in geese prior to and after experimental infection of Borrelia anserina. It was found that in the peak stage of spirochetemia the content of hemoglobin, total lipids, and calcium, the percent of albumins and alfa-globulins, and the activity of the
alkaline phosphatase
in the blood decreased. The
prealbumin
fraction of the serum protein was completely reduced. The activity of the lactatedehydrogenase, acid phosphatase, amino transferrases, and aldolase showed higher values that were statistically significant, while the activity of the creatinephosphokinase rose to a slighter extent. The urea, bilirubin, inorganic phosphorus, and the alfa-, beta-, and gamma-globulins correlated positively with the course of the infection.

The nutritional status of children with cow's milk allergy was followed during an elimination diet in 19 children (9 boys and 10 girls) beginning at the mean age of two years (range 0.6-4.1 years). The cow's milk allergy had been verified in hospital by a challenge test at a mean age of 0.9 years (range 0.2-1.9 years). Weight, height and laboratory indices to test protein, mineral and vitamin status were measured at three follow-up visits at three-month intervals. In addition to cow's milk allergy all these children had some other food allergies, and six of the 19 children were allergic to soy protein. Only two of the 19 children were given a soy-based formula. In the diets of the other children, cow's milk was replaced by increasing amounts of other foodstuffs and supplementary calcium. At the beginning of the study the relative heights of the children were slightly retarded (-0.6 SD) and remained unchanged during follow-up (-0.8 SD at the end of the study). The relative weights were found to be decreased during follow-up (p less than 0.05). There was a significant reduction in serum
prealbumin
values; eight of the 19 children showed abnormally low values. Low serum zinc values were seen in 12 children. Serum iron concentration was low in two children and two had high serum
alkaline phosphatase

We determined approximately 15,000 laboratory values in 236 individuals between the ages of 60 and 90 y, 22 individuals between 90 and 99 y, and 69 individuals greater than or equal to 100 y, and compared these with values in young adults. We tested 47 different analytes in the 60-90-y group and 93 analytes in the greater than or equal to 90-y group. Na, K, Cl, and CO2 values were either identical or showed minimal change with age; pH decreased slightly. Differences in Ca values were only minor, but ionized Ca increased slightly. Phosphate decreased in men, but changed only minimally in women; parathyroid hormone increased with age. Increases with age were also observed for glucose, insulin, and C-peptide. Among the enzymes,
alkaline phosphatase
increased in women, but in men only greater than 90 y; gamma-glutamyltransferase increased in both sexes. Creatine kinase (CK) decreased slightly in individuals greater than 70 y and markedly in those greater than 90 y of age, whereas CK-MB decreased markedly greater than 70 y, reaching the detection limit in individuals greater than 90 y. Lactate dehydrogenase isoenzyme 5 decreased slightly with age. Urea nitrogen increased gradually with age, but creatinine increased only in individuals greater than or equal to 90 y. The increase in urea is not paralleled by a loss of protein in urine, suggesting that the possible cause of azotemia may not always be renal pathology. Urate increased in women but not in men. Liver function, as measured by total bilirubin and liver enzymes, was exceedingly well maintained. Concentrations of most proteins show little change, except for slight decreases in
prealbumin
, albumin, and transferrin, proteins used as an index of nutritional status. IgA values increased, IgG ranges were wider, IgM and IgD decreased, and the range for IgE was narrower than in young adults. Cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglyceride values increased with age, but decreased in individuals greater than or equal to 90 y. Among the trace elements, magnesium changed little, zinc and lead decreased, and copper values increased with age. Total triiodothyronine and thyroxine decreased, with concomitant increases in thyroid-stimulating hormone. More individuals had increased microsomal antibodies and thyroglobulin titers in the aging population than in the young. In men, the free, percent free, bioactive, and total testosterone values decreased, but luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) values increased. Serum ferritin,

, pseudocholinesterase, alpha-1-antitrypsin and caeruloplasmin were determined in control subjects and patients with pancreatic cancer, chronic pancreatitis or extra-pancreatic disease mainly of gastrointestinal origin, in order to investigate the different hepatic changes which influence serum ferritin in chronic pancreatic and other digestive diseases. Increased circulating ferritin was found in pancreatic cancer and extra-pancreatic disease when compared to controls. Correlations were detected between ferritin and the other proteins investigated and between ferritin and total bilirubin,
alkaline phosphatase
and alanine aminotransferase. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that cholestasis accounts for 45% of circulating ferritin, the acute-phase response accounted for 18% and decreased liver function accounted for 11%. We conclude that the increase in serum ferritin in chronic pancreatic and other gastrointestinal diseases largely depends on liver changes, with cholestasis probably playing a primary role.

In order to assess the metabolic value of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) in severely stressed intensive care unit patients, two fat emulsions containing either long-chain triglycerides (LCT), or a mixture of 50% MCT and 50% LCT were compared in 24 head trauma patients over a 10 day period. Variations of serum triglyceride, non-esterified fatty acid, glycerol and phospholipid concentrations remained comparable after both lipid infusions. Bilirubin,

Ouchterlony modified by N. I. Khramkova and G. I. Abelev and the method of counter immunoelectrophoresis after K. Wilms. Oncofetal antigens TSAP, EPA-1, EPA-2 and CEA characteristic for antigenic reversion of thyroid tumors were identified in thyroid tissues. Antigenic reversion was most noticeable in tissues of papillary thyroid cancer. CEA and EPA-1 identification in the patients' blood sera could be applied to serological diagnosis of thyroid cancer.

Visual and microscopic inspection, pH, osmolality, measurements of particle size were made on one formulation of parenteral admixture. Based on examination of particle size distribution, admixtures prepared from Intrapilide or Ivelip were stable for up to four days. The results of visual and microscopic inspection in case of using Endolipide concluded to a shorter stability in that case. In the second part of this work the two fat emulsions Intralipide and Ivelip were studied to blow out any clinical or biochemical differences between two groups of patients. Conventional long chain triglyceride (LCT) was compared with a new emulsion containing 50% medium chain triglyceride (5% MCT/5% LCT) in a randomized cross-over trial of 10 days duration. Plasma concentrations of albumin,

, the complement components C3 and C4, and prothrombin times measured daily at 8 am, before lipid infusion, showed no progressive change during the 10 days of the trial, nor in each separate 5-day period when LCT or MCT/LCT was infused. Aspartate transaminase and

activities were similar over the two periods. There was a significant increase (compared with preinfusion levels) in C3 and C4 levels after 5 hr of either lipid infusion. Nitrogen balance was improved, and plasma bilirubin levels were lower on the regimen containing MCT/LCT.

No difference in the protein or enzyme concentrations was found between the different zinc supplement groups. No difference was seen in serum copper or ceruloplasmin between copper dose groups although one intravenous supplement was double that of the other.
