The epithelial cells in the taste buds of C. jacchus and C. penicillata show a moderate amount of ribonucleic acid an a concentration of a PAS-positive diastase-resistant material at their apical part. These cells are devoid of UDPG-GT, phosphorylases, G-6-PA, alanyl aminopeptidase, leucine aminopeptidase, cholinesterase and MAO; they present a weak reaction of F-1, 6-P Ald, LDH, SDH, MDH, cytochrome oxidase, beta-OHBDH, nonspecific esterase and acid phosphatase and a stronger reaction to ADH, NADPH2-TR, ATPases, alpha-GPDH, alkaline phosphatase, 5-nucleotidase and GDH. The activity of mitochondrial enzymes (succinic dehydrogenase and cytochrome oxidase) and enzymes associated with blood-brain barrier function (

) in the CNS of rats was studied from 5 minutes to 62 hours after cerebral concussion. There was a transient increase in succinic dehydrogenase activity during the first hour after concussion in the neurons of the structures close to the impact. The
alkaline phosphatase
activity, strongly positive in the walls of normal blood vessels, decreased within five minutes after concussion; it virtually disappeared in 15 minutes but returned to normal level after 62 hours. These findings are in good correlation with previous electron microscopic observations. Their significance is discussed.

The structure and histochemistry of the palmar and plantar skin were studied in four adult male marmosets (two Callithrix jacchus and two Callithrix penicillata). In this skin there exist well-developed epidermal ridges, to which are attached one or two ducts of sweat glands. A thick stratum corneum can be seen in the epidermis, while a distinct stratum lucidum cannot be isolated from the other layers. The stratum granulosum is constituted by one or three layers of cells containing keratohyalin granules. Melanin granulations are mainly concentrated in the basal cells of the epidermal ridges. Dendritic melanocytes and amelanotic melanocytes containing
alkaline phosphatase
are found among the epidermal cells. Glycogen, UDPG-GT and phosphorylases are mainly present in the middle and lower Malpighian cells of the epidermal ridges. Alkaline phosphatase, ATPase, alanyl amino-peptidase and leucine aminopeptidase were absent in the epidermal cells. SDH, cytochrome oxidase, MAO and a certain number of NAD-dependent dehydrogenases (LDH, ADH, MDH, alpha-GPDH, beta-OHBDH and GDH) showed a stronger reactivity in the basal cells and Malpighian layer. The NADP-dependent enzymes (G-6-PDH, 6-PGDH, cis-aconistase and ICDH) were more reactive in the upper Malpighian layer and stratum granulosum. The stratum corneum showed some acid phosphatase and nonspecific esterase reactivity. The collagenous fibers intertwined with a small number of very thin elastic ones and a larger amount of reticular fibers run almost parallel to the epidermal ridges in the papillary body. butyrylcholinesterase
, acetylcholinesterase, nonspecific esterase and G-6-PA are disposed at regular intervals and frequently at each side of the epidermal ridges. Pacinian corpuscles were found only in the hypodermis. The eccrine sweat glands contain glycogen, UDPG-GT and phosphorylase in their secretory, ductal and myoepithelial cells. The secretory part shows a uniform reactivity for every dehydrogenase because it contains only one type of cells (clear cells). The intraepidermal segment of the ducts shows a stronger reactivity to nonspecific esterase and NADP-dependent dehydrogenases than the epithelial cells around it.

and leucinaminopeptidase) was investigated in the neurons of NSO and NPV, in the infundibulum and in the neurohypophysis and the innervation of the neurons (acetylcholinesterase, monoamino-oxidase, catecholamines) by unmilked and milked cows. The milking stimulus influences the metabolism especially in the neurosecretory cells of the NPV. After the milking stimulus the activity of oxydative enzymes is above all very increased, the anaerobic way of the output of energy is after that also higher. The building up of the carbohydrates through glycolyse in the neurosecretory cells of the NPV after the milking stimulus is increased. The possible participation of the investigated hydrolytic enzymes on the metabolism of the neurosecretory cells is discussed. The neurons of the NPV were innervated for the most part adrenergic. It is discussed the participation of the enzymes succinodehydrogenase and monoaminooxidase on the hormone release in the neurohypophysis.

We describe a method of detecting human DNA mutations with nonradioactive, biotinylated allele-specific oligonucleotide probes. This method can detect seven different mutations in the
butyrylcholinesterase
, cystic fibrosis, and N-acetyltransferase genes under identical assay conditions. This indicates that it may be used to detect mutations responsible for a wide variety of genetic diseases and pharmacogenetic conditions. The method involves first amplifying selected DNA fragments by the polymerase chain reaction and dot blotting the amplified DNA in duplicate onto small nitrocellulose squares. Each dot blot is then hybridized in individual wells containing a tetramethylammonium chloride solution with short biotinylated probes specific for either the normal or mutant allele. Successfully hybridized probes are detected by a simple colorimetric reaction using an avidin-
alkaline phosphatase
conjugate, which yields a very strong, clear signal. DNA from homozygous normal or mutant individuals hybridizes only to the normal- or mutant-specific probes respectively, while DNA from heterozygous individuals hybridizes equally well with both probes. These results can be easily interpreted to assign a genotype to the sample DNA. This method is amenable to automation, and may be useful in clinical laboratories for diagnosis of a wide variety of DNA mutations responsible for unusual reactions to drugs and environmental chemicals.

increased in the wall of blood capillaries after irradiation with 50, 150, 500 Gy. The dose of 500 Gy induced the most pronounced activity. These membrane enzymes are highly sensitive to ionizing radiation. The activity of acid phosphatase, acid nonspecific esterase and thiamine pyrophosphatase increased in magnocellular neurons after irradiation with all doses of gamma radiation. Glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and succinate dehydrogenase showed a decreased activity in neurons, neuropil and capillaries.

Significant species differences were detected during at least one season for all of the variables measured. 4. All species were maintained outdoors, but only northern bobwhites came into reproductive condition and showed sex-differences in the clinical variables during their normal breeding season. 5. It was concluded that reference values for the 18 clinical variables measured could be calculated from our data for adult specimens of the species studied, and that results for one species cannot be extrapolated with certainty to any other species. 6. (SAP), serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) and serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT). The mean age of the workers was 31 years and the mean duration of fenthion exposure 8.2 years. Headache (59%), giddiness (50%), ocular symptoms (27%) and paresthesia (18%) were the commonest symptoms. Serum acetylcholinesterase and

The foliate papillae of the rabbit, rat and mouse were studied by scanning electron microscopy and histochemistry. The papillae consisted of folds and grooves located on the posterolateral margin of the tongue in front of the circumvallate papillae. The numbers of folds and taste buds varied among the three animals species. The adoption of cell culture models to screen putative neurotoxicants is recognized in view of the consequences of nerve damage by environmental chemicals. Developing cell culture models that mimic certain properties of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) would be especially useful in view of the barrier's strategic role in the neurotoxic process. The present study evaluates a kidney epithelial cell line for its functional and enzymatic resemblance to cerebral endothelial cells.
