Hematological and biochemical parameters in five Thoroughbred foals during the first six months of life are reported. The samples were analyzed for red blood cell, packed cell volume, hemoglobin, platelet, white blood cell, absolute number for leukocytes, and erythrocyte fragility and serum calcium, inorganic phosphorus, sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, alkaline phosphatase, icterus index unit, bilirubin, blood urea nitrogen, nonprotein nitrogen, blood glucose, lacticdehydrogenase, glutamic pyruvic transaminase, glutamic oxalacetic transaminase, total protein, albumin, globulin, and A/G. The changes of these parameters are presented in relation to age after birth.

Several sulfonamides used as antibacterial or diuretic drugs are potent alkaline phosphatase inhibitors. The mechanism of inhibition may involve binding of the zinc in the active site of the enzyme by the unbonded electron pair on the sulfonamide group nitrogen atom as well as binding of the drug to a second site. Addition of progressively larger groups to this nitrogen leads to an increasing loss of inhibitory capability. Isoenzymes from human liver, bone, kidney, granulation tissue and intestine are inhibited to a similar extent while the placenta isoenzyme is more resistant. It is suggested that some pharmacologic actions of sulfonamides may be due to inhibition of alkaline phosphatase, rather than carbonic anhydrase.

Albino rats (Sprague-Dawley) of mean weight 100 g were divided into four groups and given for 7 days a balanced diet. They were then placed in metabolic cages for fifteen days and fed diets containing different quantities of casein: 18% (D18), 36% (D36), 50% (D50) and 72% (D72). The levels of total calcium, inorganic phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase activity, total proteins and urea were determined. The urinary and fecal excretion of calcium were determined on specimens of urine and stool collected every two days. The metabolic balance of nitrogen was also estimated. The results show there is not a linear relationship between a high protein diet and plasma protein levels, but a progressive body calcium loss was observed with the increase of casein in the diet, which confirms what other workers have already suggested.

A study of cardiovascular risk factors in middle-aged twin men provided an opportunity to test for genetic variability in the SMA 12/60 (Technicon) battery of clinical chemistry tests. Classical twin methodology was used to analyze the variation of monozygotic and dizygotic twins. In addition, frequency of co-twin contact was used to control for effects of differences in shared environment. Genetic variability played a definite role in controlling four of the 11 reported tests: one-hour serum glucose, serum urea nitrogen, uric acid, and bilirubin. No genetic variation was found for lactate dehydrogenase, phosphorus, and alkaline phosphatase. Significantly higher means for calcium, total protein, albumin, and aspartate aminotransferase in monozygotic twins precluded any statement about heredity and environment for these tests.

Serum electrolytes, metabolites and enzymes were determined in arterial blood of chronically cannulated dogs at room temperature and on exposure to 44-50 degrees C. These dogs were naturally acclimated to hot, arid conditions. In dogs maintaining their rectal temperatures (TR) below 40 degrees C, no significant changes were seen in the levels of Na+, Cl-, cholesterol, uric acid, alkaline phosphatase, lactic dehydrogenase or glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (SGPT). K+, CO2, glucose decreased significantly, and urea nitrogen (BUN) and glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) showed small but significant increases. In several cases of excitable dogs, in which TR increased above 40 degrees C, we found large, significant increases in uric acid, SGPT and SGOT, and a decrease in cholesterol. The results suggest that in dogs maintaining their TR when exposed to high temperatures, changes in serum constituents indicate merely the presence of respiratory alkalosis and an increased energetic demand. When control of TR is lost, changes occur which suggest liver, and possibly cardiac, tissue damage.

Blood serum of pygmy goats (both sexes, and castrated males) was analyzed to establish biochemical reference values. Influence of age on reference values was also studied. Serum biochemical analyses were made for urea nitrogen, creatinin, bilirubin, lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, glucose, uric acid, and total lipids. These serum values for pygmy goats were similar to those reported for man, except as follows: Aspartate aminotransferase activities were slightly higher than those reported for man. Glucose concentrations in pygmy goats were slightly lower than in human beings, and uric acid levels were significantly lower than the values for man. Female and castrated male goats had lower total lipid concentrations than did human beings, whereas intact males had higher concentrations. Thus, of the 9 measured variables for pygmy goats, 5 were comparable to human values. This, together with other attributes, including the small size which conduces to economics of maintenance and enhances the desirability of using pygmy goats in research.

One hundred and sixteen colony control dogs (purebred beagles) ranging in age from 56 to 4868 days at the time of sampling, were tested at various intervals over a 10-year period to determine the normal values of several serum constituents. The effects of sex and family line were also noted. With increasing age, serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase, total protein, and cholesterol increased, whereas glucose, serum glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase, creatine phosphokinase, iron, alkaline phosphatase, and albumin decreased. Females had significantly higher levles of urea nitrogen, iron, and cholesterol than males. Males had significantly higher serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase levels. The rate of increase in serum cholesterol with age was greater in males than in females. Males showed no age related changes in levels of urea nitrogen or iron, while the females showed decreasing levels. Significant differences in total protein and albumin were noted in dogs belonging to different family.

The increasing availability of palatable soya bean protein materials for use in human foods raises the question of possible effects on the health and well-being of the consumer. On the basis of available evidence, no unfavourable effects are to be expected, but apart from nitrogen balance investigations, systematic human experiments with these novel foods are scarce. Therefore, we carried out a large-scale experiment covering many physiological and health aspects. Two diets were compared in 4 + 4 weeks cross-over design with 92 healthy volunteers. One diet contained a wide variety of soya protein foods (test diet), about 25% of the protein intake being from soya, the other (control) diet contained similar products made from conventional protein sources. The diets were given in two identical menu cycles. Blood, urine and feces were sampled at the end of each period. Health status and subjective reactions were monitored throughout. About 90 out of the more than 100 parameters investigated did not show any difference. Statistically significant reactions to the diet composition were found in the following areas: of the blood serum enzymes, alkaline phosphatase was higher after consumption of the test diet, while serum inorganic phosphate showed a decrease. The higher magnesium content of the soya protein materials was reflected by an increase in fecal excretion, and in serum levels in the fed state. Fasting serum levels, however, were lower on the soya diet. Measurement of the intestinal noise indicated that more intestinal gas was produced on the test diet; this was confirmed by reports from the volunteers. Immunological tests showed that the females had increased IgA and soya specific IgE levels on the test diet, but no indications for allergenicity were found. All the mentioned effects were well within normal physiological ranges and do not indicate unfavourable trends. We conclude, that these results confirm the prevailing view that soya bean protein materials are acceptable ingredients for our daily food.

Blood serum samples were obtained from 114 crossbred calves on a feed trial under feedlot conditions at the end of a 56-day feeding period. Average values for 19 blood components were determined. The effects of the 3 trial rations and 2 electrolyte treatments were analyzed. Except for inorganic phosphates, urea nitrogen, cholesterol, glucose, alanine aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase most mean values were similar to those in dairy cattle. Urea nitrogen values differed significantly (P less than 0.05) in animals fed different rations apparently reflecting the crude protein content of each ration. The mean values presented can be used as base-line data for comparison with other similar studies or with values from diseased animals.

Glucose dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase activities have been studied for various conditions of sporulation of Bacillus megaterium KM (carbon, nitrogen, phosphate starvation). Glucose dehydrogenase appears in all conditions of sporulation, even with excess of glucose or gluconate. Alkaline phosphatase, usually dereprimed in phosphate starvation, does not increase during sporulation of Bacillus megaterium when phosphate is present.
