Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples were collected from the atlanto-occipital (AO) and lumbosacral (LS) subarachnoid spaces of 24 horses and 21 ponies that had no clinical evidence of neurologic disease. Depth of needle insertion, pressures, refractive index, rapid reagent strip test (protein, glucose, blood, pH) results, cell counts, content of protein, glucose, sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, phosphorus, urea nitrogen, and cholesterol, and activities of creatine phosphokinase, aspartate transaminase, lactic dehydrogenase, and alkaline phosphatase were determined. The resulting clinical reference values obtained were discussed in light of the published normal values for CSF from horses, other animals, and man. White cell counts in CSF were found to be from 0 to 6/microliters. Values for protein content were distributed between wider limits than previously reported values. The LS-AO difference is proposed as a criterion for clinical evaluation of CSF protein content. Ponies were found to have more protein in their CSF than did the horses, and CSF from the LS site contained more glucose than that from the AO site. The CSF electrolyte composition was similar to that of previous reports. Enzyme activities in equine CSF are reported for the 1st time.

Fourteen patients with renal osteodystrophy were treated for at least one year with 1-alpha-hydroxycholecalciferol (1-alpha-OHD3) in a dose varying from 1 microgram/week to 3 microgram/day. Plasma calcium and inorganic phosphorus concentrations increased significantly. The plasma alkaline phosphatase concentration fell in 11 of the 12 patients in whom it was initially raised and returned to normal in seven. Serum parathyroid hormone concentrations were initially raised in all patients, but they decreased significantly with treatment and became normal in eight patients within one year. The 10 patients with radiological abnormalities showed some improvement. Hypercalcaemia occurred in 11 patients, and necessitated a reduction in the dose of 1-alpha-OHD3 in some. 1-alpha-OHD3 was effective in reducing the biochemical and radiological abnormalities of renal osteodystrophy, but it should be used wtih care, and plasma calcium concentrations should be monitored.

Eleven cases with histologically confirmed primary hyperparathyroidism have been studied. Although histologically, bone turnover increased in all but 1 patient, urinary hydroxyproline excretion and serum alkaline phosphatase in patients with renal stones were within the upper normal limits of slightly elevated (27.5 mg/24 h, concentration 19.5 microgram/ml, alkaline phosphatase 35.0 IU/l). On the contrary, 3 cases without renal stones exhibited an increased urinary hydroxyproline excretion (129 mg/24 h, concentration 95.6 microgram/ml) and elevated serum alkaline phosphatase (99.9IU/l). Serum total hydroxyproline was elevated in both groups (renal stones, 2.00 mg%; no renal stones, 3.16 mg%; p = 0.006). Hydroxyproline was determined under conditions of a very low proline diet and 1.5 liters of daily fluid intake. There were no statistically significant differences between serum calcium, phosphorus, and parathormone between urinary excretion of calcium and phosphorus. Creatinine clearance was within normal limits in all patients. The possible relevance of urinary hydroxyproline for stone formation is discussed.

Pregnant rats were treated with 44, 88 and 176 Medical Research Council munits of thyrocalcitonin (TCT) twice daily during days 10 to 21 of gestation. Nonpregnant rats received the same treatment for 12 days. Administration of TCT to the pregnant rats increased the ash and calcium content of fetal bones and decreased the phosphorus content. The diaphyses were short and contained many persisting enchondral trabeculae and a reduced number of osteoclasts. TCT reduced the fetal intestinal alkaline phosphatase activity but elevated the intestinal calcium-binding protein content. In the pregnant and nonpregnant rats, treatment with TCT resulted in hypocalcemia and hypophosphatemia, and increased the calcium-binding protein content of the duodenal mucosa. In the fetuses, the calcium-binding protein content and alkaline phosphatase activity were higher in the jejunum and ileum than in the duodenum, and were much higher than the values found in adult animals. Our findings indicate that TCT passes through the rat placenta and affects the fetal skeleton and calcium metabolism directly, resulting primarily in decreased bone resorption.

The normal values of serum glutamic oxaloacetic transminase, serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase, serum lactic dehydrogenase and serum alkaline phosphatase, total protein, urea, creatine, cholesterol, glucose, magnesium, calcium and inorganic phosphorus were measured monthly over a 12-month period from 10 "pure" Native and 10 Native X British Crossbred pigs. Except for cholesterol, no significant difference was found between the two groups. Similar estimations were made for 5-month and 11-month Village pigs in which the serum alkaline phosphatase, inorganic phosphorus, total protein, urea, creatinine and calcium were significantly lower when compared with the corresponding age group of the pure Native pigs and Crossbred pigs. These lower values are thought to be due to the effects of the malnutrition-parasite complex of Village pigs.

Experiments were carried out with a total of 25 chickens of the Leghorn breed divided into two test groups and one control group. The test chickens were given daily the phosphorus organic pesticides timet and lebaized at rates of 0.05 mg anen mg per kg. The treated birds were kept under observation in the course of 72 days recording their cholinesterase activity (ChEA), serumglutamatoxal-acetate transaminase (SGOT), serumglutamatpyruvate transaminase (SGPT), and alkaline phosphatase (APh), and blood sugar level. It was found that as early as the third day from the beginning of the experiment ChEA dropped abruptly--by 62.72 per cent following treatment with timet, and by 29.26 per cent when treatment was carried out with lebaizid. SGOT and SGPT rose up to the 36th day by 78.74 and 59.42 per cent as against the controls. The blood sugar level increased by 20.44 per cent following the administration of timet, and by 6.95 per cent following that of lebaizid. APh on the 12th day was by 60.84 per cent higher as compared to the initial level in the case of timet, and by 39.15 per cent in the case of lebaizid. Results showed that the continuous giving of phosphorus organic insecticides (timet and lebaized) at low rates to chickens leads to the drop of ChA and the rise of SGOT, GPT, APh, and blood sugar, these changes being more clearly manifested in chickens that have been offered timet.

In 22 patients who underwent surgery suspected of primary hyperparathyroidism, the surgical findings were compared with the results obtained by pre-operative parathyroid scanning and biochemical screening. Thirteen of 15 parathyroid adenomas were localized by pre-operative scanning, but in five of them a false positive focus was also described. The technique was less useful in primary hyperplasia. Comparable results were reported by other investigators. In both instances the best results were obtained in patients with high parathyroid activity as measured by plasma calcium, plasma alkaline phosphatase and tubular reabsorption of phosphorus (TRP). Parathyroid scintigraphy was especially helpful in the presence of ectopic adenomas and in patients who had undergone previous parathyroid surgery. Unfortunately, the possibility of false positive results makes it unreliable for the diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism.

Serial changes in plasma levels of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, alkaline phosphatase, and total proteins have been investigated in 138 healthy, term Caucasian infants. Blood samples were obtained for each infant from cord blood and on day 1 and day 6. The infants were studied in three groups according to whether they were breast fed, received 'Ostermilk No. 1' or 'Cow and Gate V' formulas. Levels of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, alkaline phosphatase, and total proteins did not differ between the groups at birth or on day 1. By day 6 calcium levels were higher and phosphorus levels lower in the breast-fed infants compared with either of the artificially-fed groups. Phosphorus levels were lower in the V Formula group compared with the Ostermilk group but the mean calcium levels of these two groups did not differ significantly. However, only 2-8% of the V Formula group developed hypocalcaemia compared with 18-2% of the Ostermilk group. The only infant developing clinical tetany belonged to the group fed Ostermilk. Evidence is also given which suggests that those infants with low calcium levels on day 1 who were fed the high-solute milk tended to show a fall in calcium by day 6. This did not apply to the two other groups. It is concluded that the use of adapted cows' milk preparations for infant feeding should lead to a reduction in the incidence of neonatal tetany.

Young male rats were exposed to repeated heliox dives and analyzed for skeletal alterations. Animals were exposed 1, 3, 5, or 7 times to either 1 ATA He-O2 for 12.5 h, or to 5 ATA He-O2 for 4 h and a 8.5 h decompression, or to 5 ATA He-O2 for 4 h and a 1.5 h decompression. In a separate study, 30 rats were exposed 6 times to 5 ATA He-O2 and explosively decompressed. Animals were sacrificed 20 d after the last dive. There were no significant changes in femur wet weight, density, ash weight, length, or mineral content. Plasma calcium, phosphorus, and alkaline phosphatase remained normal. Eighteen of 30 animals survived the six explosive decompressions; however, there were no significant changes in bone. These results indicate that the number and rate of decompressions used in this study have no lasting effect on bone growth and mineral composition in the rat.

Caseins of mouse milk are phosphoproteins which precipitate at pH 4.6, stain blue with "Stains-all," and stain red with "Stains-all" following alkaline phosphatase digestion. Four caseins were separated electrophoretically in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels varying from 8.5 to 15% acrylamide. Molecular weights for three of these proteins were 43,200, 27,700, and 25,900. The molecular weights determined for bovine alphas1 and beta caseins by this method were similar to those previously obtained by other methods. A fourth mouse casein contained carbohydrate, phosphorus, and sialic acid. This protein was rennin-sensitive and behaved anomalously on sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gels, as did bovine kappa-casein. Because of similarities with bovine kappa-casein, it was designated with "kappa-casein" of mouse milk.
