Changes in plasma sodium,
potassium
, chloride, total carbon dioxide, urea, creatinine, glucose, total bilirubin, iron, total protein, albumin,
alkaline phosphatase
(AP), aspartate amino transferase (AST), calcium, inorganic phosphorus, cholesterol and triglycerides were studied in 45 Thoroughbred foals 15 min to 28 days after birth. The results were analysed in 3 groups; Group 1 (0--12 h), Group 2 (12--36 h), Group 3 (1--4 weeks). When Group 2 was compared to Group 1, there were significant reductions of sodium, creatinine, iron and calcium and elevations of total protein and bilirubin. When Group 3 was compared to Group 1 there were significant reductions of sodium, chloride, urea, creatinine, bilirubin, iron and AP. Significant elevations occurred in glucose, total protein, AST, inorganic phosphorus and triglycerides.

The effects of four day periods of infusions of 600 gm/24 hours glucose and 600 gm/24 hours of a combination of glucose, fructose, and xylitol were compared. This study was performed during total parenteral nutrition of twelve postoperative patients with major complications. The mean plasma glucose level was significantly lower during the infusion of the combination of sugars (154.2+/-19.5 mg/100 ml versus 193.9+/-15.0 mg/100 ml[p is less than 0.005). Furthermore, the required dosage of exogenous insulin was significantly lower (18.9+/-12.3 units/day versus 43.7+/-19.7 units/day [p is less than 0.01). Mean renal carbohydrate losses were 0.85 per cent during glucose infusion and 1.7 per cent during infusion of the combination. The influence of both infusion regimes on values for pH, base excess, lactate, pyruvate, free fatty acids, insulin, sodium,
potassium
, chloride, magnesium, phosphorus, bilirubin,
alkaline phosphatase
, SGOT, and SGPT 0.85 has been investigated. No clinical side effects were observed. It is concluded that the administration of the investigated combination of glucose, fructose, and xylitol is justified in patients in whom hyperglycemia during infusion of glucose alone is difficult to control with insulin.

In order to verify the influence of sampling time on blood constituents, populations of supposedly healthy subjects were grouped according to age, sex, deviation from their ideal weight, state of fasting or nonfasting, and time of sampling. Each fasting subject in one group underwent two samplings during the course of a morning: the first at 08.00 and the second between 09.00 and 12.00. In the second group, the first was taken at 13.00, and the second between 14.00 and 16.00. Subjects in the second group had eaten a standard meal of 700 calories at 12.00. Differences between the paired samples from a given individual are discussed with respect to the time of sampling for plasma urea, creatinine, proteins, albumin, calcium, sodium,
potassium
, cholesterol, uric acid, chloride ions, phosphate, bilirubin, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine phosphokinase,
alkaline phosphatase
, hemoglobin and erythrocyte and leukocyte counts. Variations due to the time of sampling were large for phosphorus, bilirubin, and leukocyte count.

Hematological and biochemical parameters in five Thoroughbred foals during the first six months of life are reported. The samples were analyzed for red blood cell, packed cell volume, hemoglobin, platelet, white blood cell, absolute number for leukocytes, and erythrocyte fragility and serum calcium, inorganic phosphorus, sodium,
potassium
, chloride, magnesium,
alkaline phosphatase
, icterus index unit, bilirubin, blood urea nitrogen, nonprotein nitrogen, blood glucose, lacticdehydrogenase, glutamic pyruvic transaminase, glutamic oxalacetic transaminase, total protein, albumin, globulin, and A/G. The changes of these parameters are presented in relation to age after birth.

When lead acetate was administered intraperitoneally to young rats at a dose of 20 mg/kg (five times a week for 6 weeks), their growth rate was retarded when compared with controls injected with sodium acetate. Only a small amount of the heavy metal reached the circulation and exerted limited effects on typical target organs. However, large, electron-dense inclusion bodies were found in the abdominal cavity. The in vivo intestinal absorption of glucose was reduced. When perfused at 40 mM concentration, the experimental animals had a mean absorption rate of 152.1 nmol/min . cm vs. 230.6 in the controls (p less than 0.01). Also, sodium and
potassium
transport was reduced. No effects were observed on amino acid transport and (Na+-K+)-ATPase. Mg++-ATPase, glucose-6-phosphatase, fructose-1, 6-diphosphatase, pyruvate kinase, succinic dehydrogenase, and tryptophan hydroxylase in the small intestinal mucosa and the kidney were unaltered. Renal
alkaline phosphatase
was decreased. These studies confirm the greater susceptibility of some active transport mechanisms of the small intestinal mucosa to lead toxicity, compared to those of the kidney.

Semen samples were collected at weekly intervals for six weeks from eight sexually mature beagles previously shown to produce normal ejaculates. Seminal plasma and sperm fractions were separated by centrifugation and the sodium,
potassium
, alanine and aspartate aminotransferases, acid and
alkaline phosphatase
concentrations in the two fractions determined. Regression analysis of the mean weekly values obtained from physical and biochemical examination of the ejaculates showed that sodium ion concentration was highest in seminal plasma. The highest levels of aminotransferases were found in sperm fractions. Those enzymes may be indices of abnormal or damaged spermatozoa. Acid and
alkaline phosphatase
activity was 100 times greater in seminal plasma than in sperm fractions. Phosphatase concentrations are likely to be dependent on prostate activity. Measurement of acid phosphatase in canine semen therefore may be a useful index of prostate function. The motility of the semen samples was independent of the
potassium
concentration in seminal plasma. However, there was some evidence of a correlation between sperm motility and the enzyme and sodium content of seminal plasma.

Experimental closed loop small intestinal volvulus was studied in the anesthetized horse. Volvulus was simulated by ligation of the mesenterial veins to a segment of small intestine. Physical signs and hemodynamic, hematologic, clinical chemical, bacteriologic and peritoneal fluid values were examined. Compared to conscious horses anesthesia highly delayed and modified the clinical signs of shock (changes in mucosal colour, dehydration, decreased skin temperature, elevated pulse rate, low blood pressures) and of small intestinal volvulus (altered peristalsis, gastric dilation). Plasma glucose response to shock was also modified by unconsciousness. However, a dose response relationship was indicated between the extent of small intestinal damage and clinical symptoms. The same was applicable to changes in blood pressures, blood acid-base balance, lactate,
potassium
, chloride, glucose, inorganic phosphorus, creatinine, creatine kinase, red blood cell and total white blood cell counts and serum total protein. The relationship was also indicated in the following peritoneal fluid values: volume, lactate, pH, total white cell counts,
alkaline phosphatase
and bacteriology. Changes related to shock (insufficient tissue perfusion) were low blood pressures and metabolic acidosis due to anaerobic glycolysis with accumulation of lactic acid. Also low plasma glucose and elevated plasma
potassium
, creatinine, inorganic phosphorus and creatine kinase were regarded as consequences of shock.

The precision and accuracy of 21 methods in clinical chemistry (sodium,
potassium
, calcium, chloride, phosphorus, iron, copper, bilirubin, uric acid, urea, creatinine, total serum protein, triglycerides, glutamate-oxalacetate-transaminase, glutamate-pyruvate-transaminase, alpha-hydroxybutyrate-dehydrogenase,
alkaline phosphatase
, lactate dehydrogenase, gamma-glutamyl-transpeptidase, acid phosphatase, amylase) were studied after diluting samples 1 : 2 and 1 : 4. Dilution of 1 : 2 did not show any significant effect on the precision and accuracy of the studied methods. In case of chloride, phosphorus, iron, bilirubin, uric acid, urea, creatinine, total serum protein, triglycerides, glutamate-oxalacetate-transaminase and
alkaline phosphatase
reliable results were obtained also after 1 : 4 dilution.

The plasminogen activator in 645 specimens of various human arteries--thoracic, abdominal aorta, carotic, pulmonary, renal, basilar, coronary - was studied using Todd's histochemical method. 92 cadavers were used, 1--18 hours post mortem from subjects aged from 272 days to 83 years. 45 specimens of pulmonary, renal and splenic arteries were obtained during surgery. The greatest fibrinolytic activity was within the adventitia. Intima occasionally showed very little fibrinolytic activity, or none at all. No statistically significant differences in plasminogen activator activity were found between the various arteries examined. A statistically significant increase in fibrinolysis in adventitia of atherosclerotic arteries was established. No correlation was found between the fibrinolytic activity of the arteries and their
alkaline phosphatase
content. Some properties of the plasminogen activator of the arterial vessel wall were evaluated. Influence of storage, inactivation with epsilonaminocaproic acid and extracted with
potassium
thiocyanate was studied.

Diagnostic peritoneal lavage using one litre of isotonic saline was performed on 27 patients with acute pancreatitis as soon as possible after diagnosis. There were no complications. Severe attacks (defined retrosepctively according to the progress of the attack) were characterised by the presence of free peritoneal fluid and by dark-coloured and often opalescent return fluid. The concentrations of albumin, aspartate aminotransferase (SGOT) and total protein in the return fluid provided good discrimination between severe and mild attacks, and there were also significant differences in the concentrations of amylase, urea, calcium,
potassium
, bilirubin,
alkaline phosphatase
, and the white cell count. Lavage successfully predicted severe disease in five patients whose condtion had been clinically assessed as mild.
