Effects of 3 hours of methoxyflurane anesthesia in 20 dogs were determined by blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum
creatinine
(SC), serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), serum
alkaline phosphatase
(
ALP
). sulfobromphthalein (BSP), phenosulfonphthalein (PSP) clearance test, 24-hour water intake and urine excretion, and serum inorganic fluoride (SIF) evaluation. Values for BUN, SC, serum ALT, BSP, and PSP after the anesthetic were not significantly different (P less than 0.05) from the base-line values. The serum
ALP
values were significantly increased (P less than 0.001). Water intake and urine excretion showed a peak increase 48 hours after anesthesia. Serum inorganic fluoride concentration increased significantly (P less than 0.001) compared with the base line. The SIF 20 minutes before anesthesia was 4.54 +/- 0.82 mumol/L, at 90 minutes of surgical anesthesia 92.35 +/- 8.91 micronmol/L, at 20 minutes after anesthesia 132 +/- 12.55 micronmol/L, and at 1, 3, and 6 days after anesthesia they were 105.60 +/- 8.93, 42.10 +/- 6.90, and 12.65 +/- 1.32 micronmol/L. Clinical signs of renal or hepatic failure were not detected in any of the treated dogs during 7 day post-anesthetic observation period.

On a random basis, 19 patients with metastatic and recurrent ovarian carcinoma received 100, 200, or 400 mg daily of medroxyprogesterone acetate orally. All patients had previously failed to respond to cytotoxic therapy. None of the 5 patients receiving 100 mg/day had an objective response. 1 of the 9 patients receiving 200 mg/day had an objective response for 4 months and 2 had their disease remain static for 4 and 5 months. None of the 5 patients who received 400 mg/day had an objective response but 1 had her disease remain static for 7 months. All epithelial ovarian cell types were included in the study. During drug therapy no change was found in hemoglobin levels, leukocyte counts, platelet counts, serum levels of
creatinine
, bilirubin,
alkaline phosphatase
, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, fasting blood sugar, or urine. Data from these 19 patients indicate that this drug, as used, had no significant benefit.

The effects of prolonged strenous exercise on the plasma concentrations of sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, bicarbonate, phosphate, albumin, cholesterol, glucose,
creatinine
, bilirubin,
alkaline phosphatase
, creatine phosphokinase, lactic dehydrogenase and asparate amino transferase were studied in a group of 26 horses competing in an endurance ride. There were significant changes in most parameters, when control values were compared with those taken immediately after the ride. There was also a significant correlation between several biochemical parameters and heart rate taken 30 minutes after the ride. When faster and slower horses were compared, significant differences were found only in phosphate and glucose values.

Among 580 consecutive nonselected necropsies there were 145 cases of secondary hyperparathyroidism. In 74 instances blood concentrations of Ca2+, PO4(3-), urea,
creatinine
, total protein, albumin and
alkaline phosphatase
were available for comparison with the histomorpholgical degree of parathyroid hyperplasia matched with a control group of 32 patients with normal parathyroids. Analysis of variance revealed a significant difference in the levels of PO4 (3-) and
creatinine
between the normal group and that with minimal hyperplasia. Minimal and moderate diffuse parathyroid hyperplasia was associated with significant difference in calcium, phosphate, urea,
creatinine
, and total protein concentrations.

Eleven cases with histologically confirmed primary hyperparathyroidism have been studied. Although histologically, bone turnover increased in all but 1 patient, urinary hydroxyproline excretion and serum
alkaline phosphatase
in patients with renal stones were within the upper normal limits of slightly elevated (27.5 mg/24 h, concentration 19.5 microgram/ml,
alkaline phosphatase
35.0 IU/l). On the contrary, 3 cases without renal stones exhibited an increased urinary hydroxyproline excretion (129 mg/24 h, concentration 95.6 microgram/ml) and elevated serum
alkaline phosphatase
(99.9IU/l). Serum total hydroxyproline was elevated in both groups (renal stones, 2.00 mg%; no renal stones, 3.16 mg%; p = 0.006). Hydroxyproline was determined under conditions of a very low proline diet and 1.5 liters of daily fluid intake. There were no statistically significant differences between serum calcium, phosphorus, and parathormone between urinary excretion of calcium and phosphorus.
Creatinine
clearance was within normal limits in all patients. The possible relevance of urinary hydroxyproline for stone formation is discussed.

The normal values of serum glutamic oxaloacetic transminase, serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase, serum lactic dehydrogenase and serum
alkaline phosphatase
, total protein, urea, creatine, cholesterol, glucose, magnesium, calcium and inorganic phosphorus were measured monthly over a 12-month period from 10 "pure" Native and 10 Native X British Crossbred pigs. Except for cholesterol, no significant difference was found between the two groups. Similar estimations were made for 5-month and 11-month Village pigs in which the serum
alkaline phosphatase
, inorganic phosphorus, total protein, urea,
creatinine
and calcium were significantly lower when compared with the corresponding age group of the pure Native pigs and Crossbred pigs. These lower values are thought to be due to the effects of the malnutrition-parasite complex of Village pigs.

Enzyme survey specimens were prepared by spiking portions of a normal serum pool with
creatinine
, urea, and five enzymes (lactate dehydrogenase, creatine phosphokinase,
alkaline phosphatase
, and aspartate and alanine aminotransferases), and preparing admixtures of the spiked pools with the original serum. This admixture technic established linear interspecimen relationships that could be confirmed by analyses for
creatinine
and urea nitrogen. Both ethylene glycol-stabilized liquid serum specimens and lyophilized specimens were prepared as sets of six to eight samples having six concentrations of each enzyme. The sets were distributed on five occasions to about ten laboratories that were widely separated geographically, and the specimens were analyzed by a variety of methods, by various instrumental systems, and in different reaction conditions, and results were reported in diverse units. This report describes how the analytic data obtained through the use of these specimens that were specifically designed for survey purposes can be analyzed statistically to provide meaningful assessments of laboratory performance in enzyme analyses.

In 181 consecutive patients with breast cancer, urinary hydroxyproline excretion has been critically evaluated in conjunction with clinical, biochemical, radiological and scintigraphic parameters. The urinary hydroxyproline/
creatinine
ratio is a sensitive index of the presence of bone metastases. Urinary hydroxyproline excretion is a reliable method of selecting those patients whose elevated serum
alkaline phosphatase
is secondary to bone disease rather than liver idsease. The estimation of hydroxyproline excretion furthermore gives information on the activity of bone metastasis, and its response to treatment, which cannot be given by radiological or scintigraphic methods. It is doubtful whether urinary hydroxyproline estimation will help to detect bone metastases before they are apparent on scintigrams. When the bone scan is doubtful, as often occurs in older subjects, hydroxyproline excretion has been found to be helpful in classifying the patient. When scintigraphy is not available, an elevation of hydroxyproline excretion, together with an elevation of Ca/cr ratio or
alkaline phosphatase
activity, may pre-date by several months the radiological demonstration of osseous metastases.

We examined whether inter-individual differences in correlation coefficients previously found among subjects truly reflect consistent inter-individual differences or are time-related within an individual. The consitutents studied in this investigation were (a) the enzmes aspartate aminotransferase,
alkaline phosphatase
, and lactate dehydrogenase; and (b) the non=protein nitrogen-containing constituents urea, uric acid, and
creatinine
. Ten healthy women were each subjected to 15 venipunctures over a five-week period (Series I), and, after a two-month interval, were again subjected to 15 venipunctures over a second five-week period (Series II). Before statistical analysis, the data were corrected for the batch-to-batch (day-to-day) arnalytical variation. There was a signiificant (P less than .05) change in the covariance structure (variances or correlation coefficients, or both) between the two series in four of the 10 subjects for the combination of enzymes, and in three other subjects for the combination of nonprotein nitrogen constitutents. Although we found a significant (P lees than .05) average intra-individual variation in the mean values from series to series in the cases of the three enzymes and urea, the magnitude of the inter-series variation in means was relatively small. CV's were:
alkaline phosphatase
, 3.4%; lactate dehydrogenase, 2.3+; aspartate aminotransferase, 3.3%; urea, 5.0%; uric acid, 1.0%; and
creatinine
, 1.2%.

The relation between the urinary pregnanediol determined by gas-liquid chromatography during pregnancy, with ultrasonic findings (biparietal diameter, thickness and echorrefringency of the placenta and the appreciated quantity of amniotic fluid), with biochemical parameters of control of pregnancy (beta-glucoronidase, total and thermostable
alkaline phosphatase
), with amnioscopic findings, and with several studied parameters of the amniotic fluid by amniocentesis, were studied. A good relation exists with the parameters which denote placentary insufficiency and fetal risk (irregularity in the homogeneity of the placenta, elevation of the total and thermostable
alkaline phosphatase
, positive amnioscopy) and also with those that are related with fetal maturity (biparietal diameter, shake test, organge cells,
creatinine
in amniotic fluid, etc.). These results indicate that the determination of urinary pregnanediol can be one of the tests controlling the normal and pathological pregnancies, being useful in the detection of fetal risk and the diagnosis of the intrauterine fetal maturity.
