The circadian variations of serum components such as: cholesterol, LDH, GOT,

, proteins, bilirubin, ferrous ions and

were investigated. Blood collection was made two times in 24 hrs.: 5-6 p.m. and 7-8 a.m. on the next day. The data obtained allowed the classification of the subjects into two groups: stable and variable. The most interesting observations were: evening decrease of cholesterol, evening increases of LDH with a tendency of intensification of the LDH5 fraction in the zymogram and evening decreases of ferrous ion.

, glucose, protein, albumin, haptoglobin, zinc sulphate, iron, TIBC, bilirubin, ALAT and ASAT, and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and low polar estrogens (LPE) were measured. All patients exhibited lowered S-cholesterols which reverted to normal after 6 months treatment. S-triglycerides were unchanged except in Group 1 patients where there was a slight increase after 24 months use (p .01). Serum FSH and LH decreased during treatment and this decrease was most pronounced in Groups 2 and 3. Serum LPE levels increased in Group 1, for climacteric women, to normal luteal values and in postmenopausal women to proliferation values. In groups 2 and 3, serum LPG for postmenopausal women reached luteal values. Climacteric symptoms disappeared with therapy and there was an improvement in symptoms caused by estrogen deficiency. 34 patients discontinued treatment, 14 changing to another preparation. These preparations were well tolerated with few side effects.

The expert group "Drug Interference in Clinical Chemistry" of the Bureau of Reference, Directorate General for Research, Science and Education of the Commission of the European Communities, consisting of one participant of each member of the European Communities, presents this first report on the final results of its activities. Within the framework of a first stage basic program, the paper describes interferences of therapeutic and elevated doses of ascorbic acid on commonly used clinical chemical methods. This is the result of a bipartite study that was jointly planned, carried out and evaluated. Local and personal influences have been eliminated, as have variations due to methodology, measurement equipment and reagents, in order to be able to present distinct causal effects of ascorbic acid. could be detected. At therapeutic concentrations, ascorbic acid distinctly interferes with the analysis of glucose, uric acid,

and inorganic phosphate. The extent and direction of interferences vary, depending on the type of reaction, kit and apparatus. In some cases the influence of ascorbic acid results in severe disturbance of the analytical methods leading to useless values.

The frequency and causes of vitamin D deficiency in old age were investigated in 53 hospital patients, 88 persons from old people's homes, 21 tenants of a hostel, and 29 members of a seniors meeting group, aged between 65 and 93 years. In all persons 25-hydroxyvitamin D, calcium, phosphate,

, leucine arylamidase and

were determined. In 27 cases immunoreactive parathormone was measured. In hospital patients there was evidence of vitamin D deficiency significantly more frequently as compared with the other groups. The 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration was on average lower in the cases from old people's homes and hostels than in the members of the seniors group. The results in the groups investigated showed a relation to the average exposure to the sun. The results in 10 further patients in this age group with florid osteomalacia indicate a multifactorial aetiology of vitamin D deficiency disease due to reduced exposure to sun, inadequate nutrition and reduced absorption of vitamin D.

An alternative explanation is that the hyaluronic acid is derived from neoplastic cells as part of a reversion of glycosaminoglycan synthesis to a more ;fetal' state, a glycosaminoglycan counterpart of the production of oncofetal antigens by neoplastic cells.

Lithium chloride administration to growing rats, which resulted in circulating lithium levels of 1.4 meq/liter, was attended by significant suppression of bone mineralization and organic matrix synthesis as assessed by tetracycline labeling and histological quantitation of osteoid, respectively. Spontaneous renal artery embolism is not rare, but a correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment are often delayed. Clinical features and follow-up of 17 cases are reported. Cardiac disease or arrhythmias pre-existed in 16 patients. Initial symptoms included flank pain (seven cases), abdominal or chest pain alone (seven), and nausea and vomiting (eight). The results of sending specimens through a computerized pneumatic airtransport system and manually delivering specimens were compared for 15 chemical tests and six hematologic procedures. All specimens were collected from inpatients and outpatients into evacuated glass containers. The specimens traversed a maximum of 829 feet (253 meters) involving 16 bends and eight transfer units at 25 feet/second (7.6 meters/second). Only the activity of lactate dehydrogenase exceeded the precision of the test in pneumatically transported specimens. Ruptured erythrocytes in incompletely filled vacuum tubes were the likely source of the increased lactate dehydrogenase activity.
