Glycocholate
and taurocholate removed from isolated pig lymphocytes a proportion of the cells' complement of 5'-nucleotidase,
alkaline phosphatase
and alkaline phosphodiesterase I before cell lysis. This may indicate a loss of externally orientated plasma-membrane components.

Two-hundred guinea pigs, weighing approximately 500 grams each, were placed in 8 groups, 4 of which received 20 micrograms/kg/day of partially purified aflatoxin for 7 days, followed by a 7 day recovery period. Paired groups then received 0, 20, 35 or 50 micrograms/kg/day of partially purified aflatoxin for 21 days. Animals were sacrificed periodically from all groups and blood was drawn for chemical and immunologic analysis. Weight gains were recorded and histopathologic studies were done on all animals. Pretreatment did not protect guinea pigs from a second exposure, and in fact enhanced mortality and liver toxicity as determined by histopathology. Serum chemistries and immunologic parameters of guinea pigs dosed twice were less conclusive, as neither high nor low doses differed from guinea pigs treated once.
Glycocholic acid
concentrations were more sensitive than traditional enzymes (aspartate and alanine amino transferase,
alkaline phosphatase
) for indicating hepatotoxicity.

Cholylglycine
levels were measured by radioimmunoassay in sera from 10 control CFI female mice and 22 CFI female mice experimentally infected with Schistosoma mansoni.
Cholylglycine
was significantly elevated in sera of all but one of the chronically infected animals. Serum aspartate transaminase was within normal limits in all the infected animals; while five infected mice had elevated serum
alkaline phosphatase
and all these five also had high levels of serum cholylglycine. Marked hepatic histopathological changes were demonstrated in all the infected animals. The data suggest that serum cholylglycine is a highly sensitive index for hepatic dysfunction in chronic hepatic schistosomiasis mansoni.

Serum levels of fasting glycocholic acid were measured in various noncirrhotic liver diseases. Forty-five patients were evaluated, 15 with chronic active hepatitis and 30 with mild liver diseases including chronic persistent hepatitis, steatosis, and minimal changes. There were increased levels of glycocholic acid in 53.3% of chronic active hepatitis cases and in 10% of mile liver disease cases (P = 0.003), and the levels reached by patients with chronic active hepatitis were higher than those in patients with mild liver disease (P < 0.0001). The latter did not show significant differences in their serum levels or in the percentage of abnormal results with respect to control group. There were weak, although significant, correlations between glycocholic acid and transaminases,
alkaline phosphatase
, gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase, albumin, and gammaglobulin. In the present study, the specificity of glycocholic acid was high in the detection of chronic active hepatitis patients at different cut-off levels.
Glycocholic acid
appeared to reflect histological severity in this group of noncirrhotic liver diseases and might have practical applications in the management of these patients.
