Blood serum was used of 49 rams and 20 ewew infected with Brucell ovis. The study on the total protein and the protein fractions of rams revealed that there existed gamma-globulinemia, the percent of the gamma-globulin rise showing a positive correlation with the morphologic changes in the testes. The alfa-globulins were found to rise immediately following the experimental infecting of the sheep for about a month, after which they came back to normal. For the evaluation of certain differences in the diminution of export proteins of the liver we examined some exactly defined groups of liver diseases with the aim of further differentiation of the pathogenetic mechanisms. We measured the activity of glutamate-

transaminase, glutamate-pyruvate transaminase, glutamate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase,
alkaline phosphatase
, cholinesterase and lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase, the Quick value, the coagulation factors I, II, V, VII, VIII, IX and X. Clotting factors were determined by a Schnitger-Gross Coagulometer. Prothrombin, antithrombin III, plasminogen, factor VIII associated antigen and activated factor XIII were measured by immunoelectrophoresis according to Laurell. Lipoprotein electrophoresis in agarose gel was performed to evaluate changes in lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase activity. Except of the rising diminution of export proteins in the course of liver disease from acute hepatitis to cirrhosis we found also specific changes of the patterns of the plasma specific enzymes. These proteins were diminished dependent on their half life time and the inflammatory activity--measured as the height of the transaminases. Lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase and factor VIII did not participate in the general diminution of the most export proteins; some details were found to explain this differing behaviour. Results are critically discussed with regard to new aspects in the biochemistry of the damaged liver cell.

, lactate dehydrogenase, gamma-glutamyl-transpeptidase, acid phosphatase, amylase) were studied after diluting samples 1 : 2 and 1 : 4. Dilution of 1 : 2 did not show any significant effect on the precision and accuracy of the studied methods. In case of chloride, phosphorus, iron, bilirubin, uric acid, urea, creatinine, total serum protein, triglycerides, glutamate-

alkaline phosphatase
reliable results were obtained also after 1 : 4 dilution.

The activity of the following enzymes in clinically normal newborn calves was investigated: glutamate-
oxalacetate
transaminase (GOT), glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (GPT),
alkaline phosphatase
(APh), creatine phosphokinase (CPhK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), leucine-aminopeptidase (LAP), aldolase (A), and cholinesterase (ChE). The studies were carried out at the first hour prior to offering colostrum as well as at the 6th, 12th, 24th hr and on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 10th, 15th, and 20th day following it first intake. Regularly rising values of the enzyme activity up to the 24th hour were observed with APh, GOT, GPT, CPhK, and LAP. The aldolase enzyme (after colostrum had been given for the first time) in all animals showed a statistically significant drop of activity at the 6th hour. The activity of LDH displayed a consistently rising trend up to the end of the experimental period. The cholinesterase activity showed high values immediately following birth, reaching those found in the dams by the end of the observation period.

Doping with tranquilizers has appeared recently in horse-back riding sports. In this paper we study the effects of acepromazine, one of the main tranquilizers used, on various physiological and biochemical aspects of muscular activity (cardiac and respiratory rhythms, seric rates of glucose, urea, protein, creatine phosphokinase, glutamate

transaminase,
alkaline phosphatase
). A low dose (0.02 mg/kg) of acepromazine is injected; the evolution of the variables is studied before and after a standardized effort. After the effort and during recuperation, acepromazine administration causes: -- a decrease of respiratory rhythm and seric protein rats, -- an increase of creatine phosphokinase rate. A discussion of these results suggests that acepromazine depresses the respiratory centers and has a possible toxic effect on the muscle cell.

Complex investigation of 5 enzymes was carried out in a cell strain with triploidy 69, XXY, derived from a human spontaneous abortus. The activity of 3 enzymes (acid phosphatase, lactate and malate dehydrogenases) in triploid cells proved to be significantly increased as compared to those of 3 diploid strains, whereas the activity of
alkaline phosphatase
was decreased. The activity of glutamate-

transaminase did not change. The absence of the pronounced genetic dose effect and different alteration of the activities of the enzymes studied may be considered as an expression of a disbalance of enzymes in cytogenetically defective cells.

Armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) were inoculated with Mycobacterium leprae isolated from lepromas taken from untreated lepromatous patients or from the spleen of an armadillo previously infected with human M. leprae. The effect of the infection on the serum levels of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH),
alkaline phosphatase
(AlkP), glutamate-
oxalacetate
(GOT) and glutamate-pyruvate (GPT) transaminases was investigated. In general, there was a good correlation between positive evidences of infection and alterations in the levels of LDH, GOT, and GPT. Although elevations in LDH levels were more striking, elevations in GOT and GPT levels were more consistent with the disease. When an absolute increase in the total LDH activity was not observed in a M. leprae-infected animal, an increase in the level of LDH isozyme V was still clearly evident. Serum levels of
alkaline phosphatase
were not affected by the disease. The ratio GOT/GPT (greater than 1.0) in the infected animals reflected and supported the chronic nature of the disease and the liver involvement. The enzymatic alterations are not, however, specific for leprosy.

Lipid peroxide levels and activities of various enzymes were examined in sera from five thermally injured patients. In all patients examined, serum lipid peroxide levels were increased in the early post-burn period, and thereafter activities of glutamate
oxalacetate
transaminase, glutamate pyruvate transaminase,
alkaline phosphatase
and lactate dehydrogenase in the sera became elevated in most patients. From these observations, it is considered that increased lipid peroxides in the bloodstream during the early post-burn period would cause damage to various organs, permitting the leakage of the enzymes into the blood. These results support the view that lipid peroxide may be regarded as a 'burn toxin'.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for human alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) has been developed. The method is based on preventing anti-ADH antibodies from binding to ADH-coated polystyrene microtiter wells by preincubation with serial dilutions of ADH-containing samples. The test detects ADH below 50 ng/ml. The sensitivity of the assay is superior to the commonly used photometric method and is particularly useful to quantitate ADH in crude tissue homogenates and in serum. Enzymatically active as well as inactive ADH can be detected, shown by the longer half-life of the ADH antigenicity (6.5 months) as compared to the half-life of the enzymatic activity (3.5 months). Approximately 10% of the total soluble protein in liver homogenates was ADH protein. The specific activity was around 0.4 IU/mg. It was higher in "atypical" livers although the absolute amount of ADH protein in these livers was identical with that in normal livers. ADH protein paralleled ADH activity in liver, stomach, and kidney homogenates. Normal serum on the average contained 59 +/- 16 ng/ml ADH (n = 9). Activity at these levels lies beyond the limits of spectrophotometric detectability.
