Ca2+ uptake and Ca2+ extrusion mechanisms were studied in enterocytes with different degree of differentiation from chicks adapted to a low Ca2+ diet as compared to animals fed a normal diet. Chicks adapted to a low Ca2+ diet presented hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia and increased serum 1,25(OH)2D3 and Ca2+ absorption. Low Ca2+ diet increased the

(AP) activity, independently of the cellular maturation, but it did not alter gamma-glutamyl-
transpeptidase
activity. Ca2+ uptake, Ca2+-ATPase and Na(+)/Ca2+ exchanger activities and expressions were increased by the mineral-deficient diet either in mature or immature enterocytes. Western blots analysis shows that vitamin D receptor (VDR) expression was much higher in crypt cells than in mature cells. Low Ca2+ diet decreased the number of vitamin D receptor units in both kinds of cells. In conclusion, changes in Ca2+ uptake and Ca2+ extrusion mechanisms in the enterocytes by a low Ca2+ diet appear to be a result of enhanced serum levels of 1,25(OH)2D3, which would promote cellular differentiation producing cells more efficient to express vitamin D dependent genes required for Ca2+ absorption.

This study evaluated the role of amino acids supplementation on the heart's adaptation under extensive training conditions. Sixty active athletes (bicyclists and swimmers) were separated into 2 groups: 30 were given amino acid mixture (1 g per 10 kg of body weight) for a period of 1 month, and the other 30 were given placebo for the same duration (control group). In the same time period, 20 subjects of similar age not engaged in physical training or sports activities were used as the additional control group. were increased, but concentrations of ALT, albumin, and triglycerides were decreased in the blood of trained athletes compared with healthy subjects not engaged in sports activities. In the athletes, some increases in IL-6 levels were noted; however, they were significantly (p < 0.05) lower than in patients with myocardiodystrophy. The values of IL-10 in athletes were higher than concentrations of IL-10 in patients with myocardiodystrophy but still lower than the normal values. The inhibition of IL-10 in blood may play an important role in the induction of apoptosis in cells of the heart muscle. The chemopreventive effect of ethanol extract of Indigofera aspalathoides (EIA) on N-nitrosodiethylamine (DEN, 200 mg/kg)-induced experimental liver tumor was investigated in male Wistar rats. To evaluate indications for living-donor liver transplantation (LDLT), we examined 25 consecutive patients with acute hepatic failure admitted to the Department of Medicine III, Kyushu University Hospital between November 2001 and July 2004. These cases were diagnosed as fluminant hepatitis (n=13), severe-type acute hepatitis (n=11), or late-onset hepatic failure (n=1). Nine patients (36%) improved with conservative treatment (conservative treatment group), and the other 16 patients (64%) needed LDLT (LDLT indicated group). In the LDLT indicated group, 11 patients received LDLT, and 4 died because of lack of LDLT donors (n=3), or renal failure (n=1). The LDLT survival rate was 82% (9/11); two patients died due to hepatic infarction and brain edema, respectively. It is very important to predict whether a patient with acute hepatic failure belongs to the conservative treatment group or the LDLT indicated group on admission. Therefore, we analyzed variables that could influence prognosis, including, parameters of hepatic function and platelet counts on admission, and relative hepatic volume (%), which represents the ratio of hepatic volume measured by CT relative to standard hepatic volume calculated with body surface area. Human cerebral malaria is caused by a protozoan parasitic with no cure till date. The isolation of brain capillaries i.e. microvessels has permitted the in vitro study related to cerebral function. Microvessels were isolated from normal and P. yoelii infected mice brain cortex and subjected to biochemical characterization by the following enzyme markers viz

The data obtained depicted a clear cut impairment of cytochrome P450 (a terminal monooxygenase) and related indices viz b5, benzopyrene hydroxylase, aminopyrene-n-demethylase, aniline hydroxylase except NADH cytochrome e reductase which increased during P. yoelii infection in mice as compared to normal. Further the oral drug administration (arteether) treatment brought back the altered MFO system normal a week alter cessation of drug treatment.

Four patients with metastatic colon cancer receiving oxaliplatin, 5 fluorouracil and elvorin, developped a progressive increase in gammaglutamyl

, contrasting with tumour regression established by CT-scan and decrease in serum carcinoembryonic antigen concentrations. Histological examination of liver biopsies showed sinusoidal dilatation in all cases, with perisinusoidal fibrosis and centrilobular vein lesions in 3, peliosis in 1 (in a patient receiving oxaliplatine by intraarterial hepatic route), and nodular regenerative hyperplasia in 1. The patient with peliosis developped ascites, and died from hepatic failure, despite withdrawal of the drug. The patient with nodular regenerative hyperplasia developped jaundice, ascites and severe infection following a right hepatectomy. In the three surviving patients, liver function tests improved after the withdrawal of oxaliplatin, and, in one, deteriorated again after reintroduction of the drug. The prevalence of liver sinusoid lesions induced by oxaliplatin-containing chemotherapeutic regimens is probably underestimated. Careful monitoring of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase and
