A study of cardiovascular risk factors in middle-aged twin men provided an opportunity to test for genetic variability in the SMA 12/60 (Technicon) battery of clinical chemistry tests. Classical twin methodology was used to analyze the variation of monozygotic and dizygotic twins. In addition, frequency of co-twin contact was used to control for effects of differences in shared environment. Genetic variability played a definite role in controlling four of the 11 reported tests: one-hour serum glucose, serum urea nitrogen, uric acid, and bilirubin. No genetic variation was found for lactate dehydrogenase, phosphorus, and
alkaline phosphatase
. Significantly higher means for calcium, total protein,
albumin
, and aspartate aminotransferase in monozygotic twins precluded any statement about heredity and environment for these tests.

Bone-cells isolated from embryonic rat calvaria increase in number two-to threefold when cultured at high, but not at low, population densities in a serum-free medium that contains
albumin
. Cultured cells respond to parathyroid hormone and exhibit a marked rise in
alkaline phosphatase
activity during proliferation, which suggests the progressive differentiation or preferential growth of osteoblast-like cells.

The above problem was studied by furnishing four groups of six gilts each with ear catheters for the following intravenous catheter treatment: 2,500 IU heparin per die over ten days, supported by two daily oral applications of 1 g Falithrom, or 2,500 IU heparin plus two daily applications of 1 g Falithrom, all intravenously. The last group remained untreated for control. One day of the dioestrus was chosen for catheter bleeding of all animals at 6 a.m., 8 a.m., noon, and 4 p.m. and subsequent determination from the plasma of free fatty acids, copper, inorganic phosphorus, total protein,
albumin
, globulin, chloride, urea, cholesterol,
alkaline phosphatase
, blood sugar, and beta-lipoproteides. Significant differences regarding these parameters between the various groups were not even established, if alpha = 0.25. The anticoagulants used in the study may be used without any reservation for catheter rinsing and clearing and will not cause any significant change in the levels of the blood parameters.

The hepatic tolerability of phthalazine-(2,2-b)-phthalazin-5,12-(7H,14H)-dione (diftalone--administered at the dosage of 750 mg/day p.o. for a mean period of 23 days--has been studied in 40 patients by means of: total plasma protein,
albumin
, fibrinogen, serum glutamin-oxalacetic transaminase, serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase, lactic dehydrogenase, creatine phosphokinase,
alkaline phosphatase
, glycemic curve after glucagon and plasmatic elimination of bromosulphalein. A statistically but not clinically significant increase of the SGPT level is the only change observed.

The effect of antithyroid treatment on the disturbed calcium-phosphorus metabolism in hyperthyroidism was studied in 16 patients. Elevated serum concentrations and urinary excretions of calcium and phosphorus were almost normalized 4 weeks after the start of medical treatment. Serum immunoreactive parathyroid hormone was decreased in the hyperthyroid state and became normal after medical treatment. Serum
alkaline phosphatase
levels were elevated throughout the study with an increase to a maximum peak after 8 weeks of antithyroid treatment. Urinary hydroxyproline excretion was initially markedly increased and fell rapidly during therapy. The observed changes suggest decreased bone resorption and increased bone formation with deposition of bone mineral after antithyroid treatment. Alterations in the serum albumin concentration during the investigation period influenced the total serum calcium concentration. Using
albumin
adjusted serum calcium values no hypocalcaemia was found during medical treatment or after a subsequent subtotal thyroidectomy.

Peripheral venous blood samples were drawn before and after induction of adjuvant arthritis in rabbits at intervals of 15 days. Using these samples, biochemical parameters were measured, including total protein,
albumin
, globulin, cholesterol,
alkaline phosphatase
, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase and glutamic pyruvic transaminase. The various biochemical tests exhibited an abnormal pattern in adjuvant animals as compared to the normal rabbits. The significance of these findings has been discussed.

Diagnostic peritoneal lavage using one litre of isotonic saline was performed on 27 patients with acute pancreatitis as soon as possible after diagnosis. There were no complications. Severe attacks (defined retrosepctively according to the progress of the attack) were characterised by the presence of free peritoneal fluid and by dark-coloured and often opalescent return fluid. The concentrations of
albumin
, aspartate aminotransferase (SGOT) and total protein in the return fluid provided good discrimination between severe and mild attacks, and there were also significant differences in the concentrations of amylase, urea, calcium, potassium, bilirubin,
alkaline phosphatase
, and the white cell count. Lavage successfully predicted severe disease in five patients whose condtion had been clinically assessed as mild.

One hundred and sixteen colony control dogs (purebred beagles) ranging in age from 56 to 4868 days at the time of sampling, were tested at various intervals over a 10-year period to determine the normal values of several serum constituents. The effects of sex and family line were also noted. With increasing age, serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase, total protein, and cholesterol increased, whereas glucose, serum glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase, creatine phosphokinase, iron,
alkaline phosphatase
, and
albumin
decreased. Females had significantly higher levles of urea nitrogen, iron, and cholesterol than males. Males had significantly higher serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase levels. The rate of increase in serum cholesterol with age was greater in males than in females. Males showed no age related changes in levels of urea nitrogen or iron, while the females showed decreasing levels. Significant differences in total protein and
albumin
were noted in dogs belonging to different family.

3 preparations of 17beta-estradiol and norethisterone acetate were administered to 34 climacteric and 175 postmenopausal women to treat climacteric symptoms and symptoms of estrogen deficiency. 56 women were treated with trisekvens (Group 1), 131 with trisekvens forte (Group 2), and 22 with estrofem forte (Group 3). Triglycerides, cholesterol, calcium, sodium and potassium ions,
alkaline phosphatase
, creatinine, glucose, protein,
albumin
, haptoglobin, zinc sulphate, iron, TIBC, bilirubin, ALAT and ASAT, and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and low polar estrogens (LPE) were measured. All patients exhibited lowered S-cholesterols which reverted to normal after 6 months treatment. S-triglycerides were unchanged except in Group 1 patients where there was a slight increase after 24 months use (p .01). Serum FSH and LH decreased during treatment and this decrease was most pronounced in Groups 2 and 3. Serum LPE levels increased in Group 1, for climacteric women, to normal luteal values and in postmenopausal women to proliferation values. In groups 2 and 3, serum LPG for postmenopausal women reached luteal values. Climacteric symptoms disappeared with therapy and there was an improvement in symptoms caused by estrogen deficiency. 34 patients discontinued treatment, 14 changing to another preparation. These preparations were well tolerated with few side effects.

The predictive value of 15 pre- and peroperative parameters upon survival after portacaval shunt was analyzed in a retrospective investigation of 134 elective operations. A multiple linear regression model was used. Survival was measured at three different points of time: one month, one year and five years after the operation. Survival at one month was influenced by the parameters bilirubin/s and ascites only. Survival at one year was influenced by
albumin
/s, sex, bilirubin/s, BSP, heart disease history and ascites Survival at five years was influenced by
albumin
/s,
alkaline phosphatase
/s, history of alcohol abuse, and globulin/s. These findings indicate that prediction of survival after portacaval shunt is an intricate process and that considerable improvement of the child criteria is possible.
