The changes in the weight, histology and biochemical composition of the
epididymis
(caput, corpus and cauda segments) in prepuberal rabbit and rhesus monkey in response to testosterone treatment were investigated. The increase in the weight of the organ was accompanied by increased levels of RNA and DNA. Androgen therapy caused an increase in the concentration of sialic acid, phospholipids and glycerylphosphorylcholine and activities of
alkaline phosphatase
, acid phosphatase and hyaluronidase. The cauda region of the
epididymis
exhibited relatively higher levels of sialic acid and glycerylphosphorylcholine. These findings are discussed in relation to the functional maturation of the organ and the role of androgen in this process.

Dermal application of benzene hexachloride in daily doses of 100, 200 and 500 mg/kg for a total period of 30 days caused significant changes in male guinea pigs. The animals exposed to high doses of benzene hexachloride (1,2,3,4,5,6-hexachlorocyclohexane) (BHC) (BHC) died within 5--12 days. There was no mortality in 100 mg/kg/day but significant pathologic and biochemical changes were observed in the vital organs of the experimental animals. Massive congestion and thickened blood vessels were seen in liver of the BHC treated animals in comparison to the normal picture of the controls. Similarly, testicular changes included mild to severe pathologic lesions. There was no change in the
epididymis
, kidney, spleen, brain and lungs. The changes in the skin were mild and no signs of dermatitis were observed in the BHC painted areas. The activity of glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) and
alkaline phosphatase
in liver and serum revealed significant changes from that of the controls. The significance of biochemical changes with the tissue damage of the insecticide exposed animals are discussed.

Localization and activity of five hydrolases (
alkaline phosphatase
, adenosine triphosphatase, acid phosphatase, nonspecific esterase and leucylamino-peptidase) were evaluated histochemically in the epididymides of mature dogs. In the ductuli efferentes, cilia and apical parts of the epithelial cells displayed high activity of
alkaline phosphatase
and adenosine triphosphatase. Strong activity of acid phosphatase, nonspecific esterase and leucylamino-peptidase was present in the basal and supranuclear zones of the epithelium of the ductuli efferentes. Stereocilia of all three segments of the ductus epididymidis showed a high activity of
alkaline phosphatase
. Positive adenosine triphosphatase reaction was confined to the stereocilia of the initial segment. A complex pattern of acid phosphatase activity was observed in the middle segment. The subdivision of the middle segment in four subsegments was therefore suggested. In the epithelium of the initial segment only a few nonspecific esterase-positive cells were seen. The infranuclear and basal areas of the epithelium in the middle segment and the supranuclear zone of the terminal segment displayed distinct nonspecific esterase activity. The possible contribution of the hydrolases to the function of the
epididymis
is discussed.

and ductus deferens of the adult domestic fowl and male gonads of juvenile roosters have been studied by means of histochemical and histological methods. Testicular interstitial cells: According to enzyme-histochemical results oxidative energy production seems to be of minor importance. An extraordinarily high activity of lysosomal enzymes (acid phosphatase and esterases in the adult, esterases only in the immature) is observed. Positive reactions of 3beta-steroid-dehydrogenase and enzymes of the pentose phosphate cycle indicate steroid hormone production; the pathways of the steroid synthesis, however, are probably different in adult and immature testes. in the peritubular cells may play a part in energy disposition for contractions. Sertoli cells of adult animals are rich in lysosomal enzymes and enzymes of the glycolytic chain but oxidoreductases react weaker than in mammalian Sertoli cells. This indicates that nutritive interactions between germ and Sertoli cells in birds are different from those in mammals: The basally orientated germ cells of birds contain strong activities of diaphorases, LDH, SDH, Cyto-Ox and seem to be metabolically rather indipendent from Sertoli cells.

A case of fatal viscerotropic Rocky Mountain spotted fever with virtual absence of cutaneous lesions was diagnosed at autopsy by specific immunofluorescent demonstration of Rickettsia rickettsii in spleen, kidney,

and skin. The clinical presentation was that of insidious onset of fever, renal failure, hypotension, hyponatremia and obtundation over a 10 day period. , billirubin and serum phosphate, grand mal seizure, myalgia and unremitting shock with death occurring on day 12 of illness. Postmortem examination revealed severe vasculitis with interstitial nephritis and multifocal tubular necrosis, pericholangitis with bile stasis, glial nodules in the brain, multifocal rhabdomyonecrosis, interstitial pneumonitis and mild interstitial myocarditis. Risk factors which this patient shared with other patients with fatal Rocky Mountain spotted fever were failure to recognize a rash, failure to obtain a tick bite history, male sex, black race and age greater than 30 years.

The effects of castration and testosterone replacement therapy on the histology and biochemical composition (RNA, DNA, total protein,

, acid phosphatase, hyaluronidase, sialic acid, glycogen, phospholipids, and glycerylphosphorylcholine [GPC]) of the
epididymis
of the rabbit and rhesus monkey were investigated. Castration produced marked ponderal, histologic, and biochemical changes in the
epididymis
. In the androgen-deficient state the tubular diameter and epithelial cell height were reduced and there was an increase in interbular stroma. The levels of RNA, DNA, phospholipids, and GPC were also reduced in castrated animals. Testosterone treatment restored the histologic features and the levels of various biochemical constituents to a great extent but not to the intact control level. The importance of endocrine and exocrine factors of the testis in relation to epididymal function is discussed.

The IVD used consisted of a nylon suture which did not occlude the lumen of the vas completely and permitted a free passage of spermatozoa. Plasma membrane fractions from the brush border (BBM) and antiluminal (ALM) surfaces of the dog's renal proximal tubule cell were separated using free-flow electrophoresis. Rabbits immunized with BBM rapidly produced antibody, but rabbits immunized with ALM did not respond. Indirect immunofluorescence and immunoferritin studies showed that the antibody reacts with the brush border of the proximal tubules in the normal kidney of the adult dog. It also reacts with the surface membranes of certain other absorptive and secretory epithelia, such as gall bladder, small intestine,

, and lacrimal gland. The antibody has affinity for the membrane maltase without affecting its catalytic activity, but does not appear to have affinity for the membrane

or the high affinity binding site for phlorizin present in the BBM. Polyacrylamide electrophoresis of solubilized BBM showed approximately 37 protein bands and four glycoproteins. We conclude that the proximal tubule cell is immunologically polarized with respect to the distribution of antigenic proteins, and that the BBM is highly antigenic. The antigenic components appear to be high molecular weight glycoproteins present in the glycocalyx.

Studied were the activity and properties of
alkaline phosphatase
(AP) in the seminal plasma, spermatozoa washed with physiologic saline, testes, and accessory sexual glands of a bull. The AP activity was highest in the seminal plasma (2493.2 IU/l) and lowest in the Kupffer gland (257.3 IU/kg crude tissue, on an average). In washed spermatozoa it proved by 10 per cent lower than the activity in seminal plasma. At 56 degrees C as much as 60-80 per cent of the AP in the investigated materials was inactivated for 30 min. AP was shown to be inactivated strongly (up to 84-97 per cent) by urea (3.8 M). L-arginine (10(-2) M) and EDTA (10(-3) M) inactivated to an equal extent AP in all studied organs. L-phenylalanine inactivated AP weakly (13-15 per cent) in the testis and the
epididymis
, and more strongly (32-57 per cent) in the accessory glands and the plasma. Agar electrophoresis revealed three to four isoenzymes of AP in the seminal plasma, three isoenzymes in the testis and the
