Nineteen hematological and serum biochemical values were analyzed for 91 healthy cats of both sexes (aged 1 to 48 months) that were bred and reared in our laboratory. , GLU, and TG became stabilized during the first 3 to 4 months of life, but others (RBC, Hb, Ht, TP, ALB) became stabilized after 9 to 11 months, during which period body weight reached a plateau. Some parameters (WBC,

, TG, Pi) showed change up to 18 months of age. These results suggest that cats 9 to 11 months old can be regarded as adults; but for some parameters, cats aged 18 months, or older, are better regarded as adults. Sex-related differences in the values for mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and WBC that were found after 11 months of age were higher in females. ALB was higher in males.

The influence of vitamin E on cadmium intoxication was investigated in rats. The exposure to cadmium (1 mg/kg, Cd as CdCl2.2H2O, intraperitoneally for 7 days) decreased the activity of hepatic and renal glutamic oxalacetic and glutamic pyruvic transaminases (GOT,
GPT
) and
alkaline phosphatase
(
ALP
) accompanied by increase in the levels of serum GOT and
GPT
and urinary protein. Simultaneous administration of vitamin E (5 mg/kg, intramuscularly for 7 days) reduced these Cd induced biochemical alterations. The accumulation of Cd in blood, liver and kidney also decreased significantly upon co-exposure to vitamin E. The antioxidant property of vitamin E seems to be responsible for the observed protection of Cd intoxication.

Egyptian scorpion venom was collected by electrical stimulation of the telson. Rats were injected with the lyophilized venom in 3 different doses (100, 200 and 400 micrograms/kg). On the other hand, serum total proteins, uric acid, cholesterol, calcium and potassium were significantly decreased 4 h after administration of the 3 doses. These changes in clinical chemistry parameters are most probably related to the toxic effect of the venom on the target organs.

In a 40-year-old patient unexplained recurrent attacks of epigastric colic with transient cholestatic icterus occurred over a 9-year period. When the patient was again hospitalised because of progressive pain-free icterus associated with mild pruritus (

103 U/l) sonography revealed liver enlargement to 17 cm, extended intrahepatic bile ducts and an echodense area of about 1 cm size in the region of the bifurcation of the common hepatic duct. Fine-needle puncture did not yield clear cytological findings. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pointed to sclerosing cholangitis. This diagnosis was confirmed by liver punch biopsy. Since the patient did not agree to a liver transplantation, he was treated with 450 mg ursodeoxycholic acid twice daily, resulting in marked reduction of the liver parameters until severe cholangiosepsis and acute renal failure occurred about 4 months later. The septic condition and its complications could not be managed despite thorough intensive-care measures so that a liver transplant had to be performed after all. Histology of the explantate revealed a cholangiocarcinoma in the region of the bifurcation of the common hepatic duct. At first the patient's condition improved markedly but one and half months later the transplant was rejected and the patient died.

1. The hematology and blood chemistry of 10 captive adult Ara rubrogenys is described. 2. They showed 3,650,000 erythrocytes/mm3, a hematocrit of 49.9% and a blood hemoglobin content of 15.2 g/100 ml. 3. Leukocyte number was 10,000 cells/mm3, the differential counts being 42.2% heterophils, 0.8% eosinophils, 2.4% basophils, 49.9% lymphocytes and 4.5% monocytes. 4. Temporary occlusion of hepatic inflow is a useful maneuver to reduce hemorrhage from liver trauma and difficult hepatic resections. The liver can be protected with a hepatic protective solution before inflow occlusion, just as the stopped heart is protected by a cardioplegic solution during open heart surgery. Twenty dogs were divided into two groups. The portal inflow of group A was infused via the mesenteric venous branch with a hepatic protective solution composed of 250 mg of hydrocortisone, 15 mEq of KC1, 6 mL of 0.1 N HC1, 5 mL of 10% magnesium sulfate and 250 mg of dextrose in one liter of cold lactated Ringer's solution. Group B was infused with cold lactated Ringer's solution as a control. The hepatic artery and portal vein were isolated and then clamped for 30 minutes. The elevation of serum GOT and
GPT
after release of the clamps was significantly greater in group B, especially during the first 48 hours. The levels of
alkaline phosphatase
and total bilirubin were also higher in group B until the 7th day. The results liver biopsies 3 hours after release of the clamps revealed marked congestion and destruction of hepatocytes in group B. We conclude that liver perfusion with a hepatic protective solution before inflow occlusion results in less damage to liver tissue and less impairment of liver function. Such protection is important in liver surgery.

Enzyme modulation by cadmium in selected organs of the fish, Barbus conchonius (rosy barb), was investigated in vivo (48 hr exposure to 12.6 mg/l cadmium chloride) and in vitro (10(-6) M cadmium chloride). 2. The acetylcholinesterase (AchE) activity was depressed in the gills but stimulated in the skeletal muscles and brain in vivo. The hepatic, branchial, and renal acid phosphatase (AcP) activity decreased marginally in vivo but it was significantly increased in the gut and ovary. This study confirmed that the kidney plays an important role in the metabolism of hormones.
